I'm surprised you didn't mention Little Shop of Horrors in any capacity, since it could argued that it was a forerunner to the whole "cult film turned into a musical" trend.
@thisexists

Little Shop rules, but it started as a off-Broadway musical.
@StudioGhostUtah
@StudioGhostUtah 10 жыл бұрын
This Exists Actually, the original Little Shop of Horrors was a 1960 black and white film directed by Roger Corman. It was shot over the course of 2 days after production wrapped for the film A Bucket of Blood and used the built sets. It gained a following by word of mouth and THEN was adapted into an Off-Broadway Musical in 1982. So it's pretty clear that it's a forerunner.

Two things: 1: I didn't even read the title when I saw the Playbill logo I clicked this video 2. In all honesty, almost every musical you can think of is an adaption of something. In fact, all five of the longest running Broadway shows of all time are adaptions (Phantom and Les Mis are based on books, Cats is based on a collection of poetry, Chicago is based on a play, and The Lion King is based on the Disney Movie). Books (like Wicked), movies (any Disney musical), plays (My Fair Lady, where even the original play was based off of a story from Greek Mythology), and even history (Newsies, based on the 1899 New York newsboy strikes, or Hamilton which doubles as a historical adaption and adaption of Ron Chernow's biography) are adapted into musicals all the time. It's hardly surprising that people have continued this trend of adapting preexisting work into a musical.

I love "The Musical" adaptations! One of my favorite unrealized ones was the fan-made "Persona 4:The Musical" based on the video game and anime of the same name. Sadly, Atlus requested a Cease and Desist. Maybe they should have taken the "Great White Shark: The Musical" Approach

Strictly speaking, the whole Mad-Libs musical concept predates musicals and goes straight back to opera and arguably further back to the very origins of theatre. A good chunk of operas are just adaptations of preexisting plays or works that, in a manner of speaking, were in the public domain before there was such a concept. If you want a "high art" equivalent to the cult movie musical, Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Lulu were both based on psychological horror plays that gained cult notoriety in turn-of-the-century Vienna.
@ConvincingPeople

(And as for ancient theatre, keep in mind how many Greek tragedies and comedies were basically fractured fairy tale takes on popular stories and myths, and how they were probably accompanied by music and outright sung in places.)

Yup. Not only that, but Hamlet is literally only half of the story. In the original story, he marries the Ophelia equivalent... and things only get really dark and ironic, like, twenty years later, when he has basically become his uncle. It's cool stuff, but I get why he changed it.

I can't believe you mentioned Anne of Green Gables: the musical; and you're actually right, it is EVERYWHERE, especially in the summer (I live in PEI.) While I haven't seen it, friend of mine that I went to school with; was actually in that musical for a while. It's honestly really awesome that you mentioned it, especially since it was something I was familiar with. That being said, I don't think the musical adaptation is a flash in the pan thing; since some of the best musical are adaptation musicals. Two of them being my two most favorite, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables (AKA two musical I would LOVE to see more than anything in the world.)

Great video! I've long been fascinated with cult film and the recent trend towards stage renditions, so I appreciate hearing you so thoughtfully and semi-definitively discussing the topic. I actually co-run a website devoted to the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros.: The Movie. The film's 25th anniversary is next year, so we have been working towards not only theatrical screening events but also a musical stage rendition in the same vein as either The Little Shop of Horrors and Evil Dead: The Musical.

The trend I hate in musicals right now is that most of the new ones, instead of spending the time and effort of writing original music for their musical, what they're going is purchasing existing pop songs and shoehorning them into their musical. Often the script is written totally separate from when the songs are being purchased so what happens is that when the songs are worked in, they have nothing to do with the actual story and the writer has to jump through crazy hoops to make them fit and it's often REALLY glaring that the song doesn't fit most of the time. Musical movies are doing this too.

+BlackburnBigdragon Can you give a few examples please? I can't think of any musicals like that off the top of my head.

Mama Mia, Walking on Sunshine, are just two in a long list but you don't have to even go there to see this lazy practice. Look at most of the kids films like Shrek and several others where they wanted to shove a song in and instead of writing their own song, shoved an already existing pop song in there. This got REALLY blatant in kids animated movies in the mid 2000's. They would be like, "We need a song here. Toss this one in whether it fits or not." and usually it was some pop song about love from the 70's or 80's. I think Shrek was where I first noticed the beginning of the trend. I remember throwing a Monkeys song in there out of nowhere was just so jarring that it took me right out of the moment with that movie. The song just didn't fit. Nothing about it fit. The style of music didn't fit the world. The song didn't fit. Nothing about it even being there fit. Some executive obviously had paid for it and said, "This has to be on the soundtrack so it has to be in the movie somewhere so put it in there." so it was added as an afterthought because the song makes no sense. And this is just the case with Shrek and not all the other movies that do this with far more songs. I'm picking on it because it's the first movie I really noticed that did it.
@theactingbug426
@theactingbug426 9 жыл бұрын
Of course, Mamma Mia! I love that musical and hate it too. As for Shrek, I thought only one of the songs was from the movie and the rest were original? That's what I remember at least.

I know this is a year old, but I think that trend is more or less dead as far as stage musicals go. We've still got musicals based on indie and/or cult films (look at Waitress), but there hasn't been a new jukebox musical on Broadway in a while and the only upcoming one is a Jimmy Buffet musical that will almost definitely be overshadowed by other, better, more original musicals like Dear Evan Hansen or Hamilton.

As a person who lives in Bulgaria( The name's Christian Chipchev, for people who don't understand Cyrillic, and I don't blame you, not everyone knows the Cyrillic script) and in my lifetime as a whole I've seen quite a lot of musicals, including Shrek and Finding Nemo: The Musical. In my opinion they're something that's sort of different than the movie adaptations they're based on and give a different view on the whole ordeal. What I'd personally like to see from you Sam, is an idea about a video about the so-called "Think Tank" Cicada 3301 - an organization that made a set of puzzles starting from 2012 to 2014 on January the 5th. They're mainly based on cryptography, stenography and data security. I personally think it would make a good vid, but that's just my point of view. Greetings from Bulgaria.

This is just me theorizing here, with no formal background in musical theatre or cultural studies, but I think what was another factor in the birth of modern cult film musical adaptations was the Jerry Springer Opera. With it's debut and (somewhat brief) popularity, it showed that there was a significant audience for "low-brow" entertainment transferred to a medium that is traditionally considered to be more high brow. In this case, it was opera but it can also easily apply to musical/Broadway theatre. The opera's success also showed that there was much humour (and profit) that could be made in the ironic juxtaposition of "low-brow" B-films or "trash TV" with "high-brow" musical theatre/opera.

Heathers: The Musical even got on Broadway. I think this is part nostalgic value and part the fact that the "X: The Musical"s often take a bit of a jab at both the tropes of musicals and their source materials, and that's why they're so enjoyable. It's why The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show is so beloved.

Speaking as somebody who does theater and has been her entire life, I can tell you that 'insert thing here: the musical' can and will ALWAYS bring in a younger audience. Think of them as the quickest way to get the next generation into musicals because not only are they familiar but often the music is made to cater to a younger generation. That's obvious from their marketing, hell, Legally Blonde the Musical was filled/aired and got a REALITY SHOW on MTV because they knew this was a musical that catered to their demographic and it would bring MTV viewership and it would put youth attention back on theater. Basically every couple years they just have to churn out an 'Insert Blank Here: The Musical' and you'll get kids into theater until they find theater of higher caliber to adore once they've sunk in far enough. I have a lot of friends who adored Legally Blonde the musical but it's something we sort of shudder at now that we're older and know better because we've since experienced more theater. So that's just my two cents. TLDR: It keeps theater alive and relevant, which isn't necessarily bad.

And I don't really intend to discredit them. To be honest, those are some of the hardest parts to sing. Singing and jump roping for a full number is not easy and I can totally recognize that. However, as the 'average' theater kid gets older they do hold a fondness for those old shows but it's sort of how Wicked is generally dismissed amongst theater fans because it was 'so ten years ago' and have moved on to other shows. Not that Wicked is bad, it's just something that the older kids associate with the younger, less experienced kids and gets a bad rap by association as a 'kids' show that isn't that big of a deal. I probably should have clarified that.

The thing is, song is not only a way to entertain, but it creates memorable "scenes". For example, there are a number of "Disney Classics" I would consider musicals. While they obviously do not have to same ascetics of an actual musical, they combine animation and story progressing songs to be extremely memorable and cherished. These movies could also be another reason why people are so willing to watch musical versions of other movies because they have seen how songs can really affect them. Even if you look at pure musical plays, you can see how much the actual music affects how we remember it. If Rocky Horror Picture Show didn't feature a song with it, most people wouldn't know the combination of words "Sweet Transvestite from Tran sexual Transylvania."

Roman Polanski's "The Fearless Vampire Killers, or, 'Excuse me but your fang is in my neck'" was first released in 1967. And it was made into a musical called "Dance of the Vampires" in 1997. It's not quite as famous as the others, since most productions were in Europe. But this has to be one of the earlier entries in the genre of "cult movie: the musical", right? On a similar note, Sam, would you consider doing an episode for musicals that got turned into movies and became cult classics? "Repo! The Genetic Opera" comes to mind.

what about cult musical turned mainstream action drama with no credit to the original? (I'm talking about Repo: The Genetic Opera being ripped off by Jude Law's movie Repoman)

I don't really think this trend is going to go away... it might decrease in popularity, but I highly doubt that it'll get close to disappearing. We live in an odd age of entertainment where the niche market is hugely tappable and certainly profitable if you go about it in the right way. With more access to highly specific things, in no small part due to the internet, we've all got the opportunity to take a look at what we individually want from entertainment and can become knowledgeable enough to actually say "I want this." This particular trend seems to be inherently rooted in niche audiences and the thing about niche entertainment is that it tends to stay relatively strong in its own circles. You may not always see it in your local theater, but it'll always be around.

YAAAAY PEI lived here my entire life we have nothing but potatoes and Anne of green gables the musical is actually called "Anne and gilbert" for the last few years. The book is very popular in japan so we get a lot of japanese tourists who fly in our come in on cruise ships.

I think you're the most amazing person by default by making jaws the musical. No question about it. Doesn't matter if you solve world hunger, you will be remembered by that musical.
