Just a monster, next-level: in addition to Living Colour, Reid did tons of session work with so many titans: The Roots, Mick Jagger, Public Enemy, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Tracy Chapman, Santana, Bernie Worrell, B.B. King. Also, more avant legends like Bill Frisell. Not many guitarists shredding this hard in 1988 without being hairspray wankers. Happy to see this get the 'S Tier' status it deserves...

Technically, it's 80s (1988). However, my theory of musical "decades" is that the sound of the next "decade" always begins a couple years before the calendar decade begins. Think about it: 70s power rock really starts up in like 68-69 with Woodstock etc. 80s new wave really starts up in like 78-79 with Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Cars, etc. Artists generally lead the trend (the good ones, anyway, LOL).

I saw them in 1991 with special guest King's X, at - get this - Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama. Foster Auditorium may not ring a bell with you, but I'll guarantee you "The Stand In The Schoolhouse Door" does. 29 years after George Wallace embarrassed my home state in the eyes of the nation by barring black students from enrolling, a black-fronted rock band tore the house down, and then an all-black rock band set the wreckage on fire. And believe you me, the significance was not lost on one soul in attendance that night. It was transcendent. Vernon Reid introduced "Open Letter To A Landlord" by saying, "They say that into each life a little rain must fall. Well, after 400 years, you get tired of being fuckin' wet."

Yesss!! 90's!! Foo Fighters is my favorite! Dave Grohl was the drummer for Nirvana. He is the lead singer, lead guitar, & writer for Foo's. 90's - "Everlong" & "Monkey Wrench" 🐒 is your type of vibe. In 2008 they sold out Wembley Stadium 3 nights in a row. That's over 250K people. Watch the whole concert live. Incredible. Dave is a rock God. Who says they don't still exist? 🤣 Alice in Chains "Man in The Box" the riff is fire! Layne Staley's (RIP) voice OMG! Everyone should hear this song!! It'll get stuck in your head for days. Nine Inch Nails is Industrial Rock which Trent ushered into the 90's. Every club banged these hard. MANY genres of rock sprung off Industial. Trent Reznor's (please read a bit about him - incredible career!!!) "CLOSER" & "Head Like A Hole" is pure genius. 🔥 He did it all himself. GEN-I-US!!!!!!

That is actually 1988! Take a deep dive into the lyrics. Living Colour released their debut at the end of my sophomore year in college. I went to a pretty conservative liberal arts college, and I was like a missionary, trying to spread the gospel of LC, trying to get my friends to listen to them. Very socially conscious, powerful lyrics along with superb musicianship. Most people freak out when they hear this is an all-black band, but honestly, they shouldn't be judged that way. I would STORNGLY recommend Desperate People, Which Way To America, or the kind of eerie This is the Life. You really can't go wrong though!
