I hear it too. Might be a tone thing...or maybe some delay and reverb needed. Guitar tone sounds too raw and dry to me. Might be the only thing lacking

@@evanabernathy480 I'm trying to learn this riff now and the tone is actually really hard to get right... it sounds super high gain but at the same time isn't? I can't figure out what I am missing, a very very low phaser makes the riff really come through but it's certainly not a phaser that Vernon Reid was using. Standard crunch high gain with reverb, delay, and lows + mids cranked gets me close but the tone is still off in some way. I also think as far as the main riff goes, playing without any open notes gets you a lot closer to the main riff feel, unlike he's doing here by playing the open d instead of picking the a string on 5.

Saturax Agreed. VR's soloing style on this tune just sounds like a lot of noise with not a lot of melodic style to it. I think he relied too much on harmonics and the whammy bar. The bridge sounds good and the main riff kicks ass tho..

Try to not alternate pick the main riff. The substitutions you are using are fine, but your timing and rhythm is off. The solo is of course your own, but penatonic blues licks just don't work for this one. Dive bombs can only be so much. Go for those shred runs bro, just go for it and work on playing it clean and then build up your speed. You're just adding too many fills bro. Too many muted string rakes n all that. The steady rhythm of this song is what makes it cool. Same with the bridge. Just work on smoothing it out. This is of course is not meant to be demeaning in any way. It's just constructive criticism that makes us all better players ok. ;)
