Seconding this. Those Cataphractii (esp the Praetor) are phenomenal. Just everything about them feels right. Good poses, not too crazy detail, not too crazy highlights, they look immersive, realistic, like real heretical marines.

This is going to sound stupid, but can you guys give us a quick shot of how you each load your brush and bring it to a point? I'm getting a lot of tip flare from some new AO series S brushes and I'm pretty sure it's how I'm bringing to it to a point. I've seen a few folk rolling it like a chopstick and now I'm suddenly interested as to whether I've been spending years ragging my brush for no good reason :P
@harrowmaster83832 жыл бұрын
Nothing dumb with this question at all this is one of the most important parts about painting minis and no beginner guide or anything ever seems to mention it I imagine it's why so many people think they need very very small brushes to get a fine point, I do just roll the brush in a clockwise motion at about a 45-ish degree from the pallet that lets you regulate the amount of paint you have in the brush and also bring it to a fine tip but I'm not exactly great at it either so take it with a grain of salt
@cultofpaint2 жыл бұрын
I like to clean it with water in a pot, then roll a point on some kitchen paper. Then I carefully dip the brush in the paint. I try to load the correct amount, but sometimes I need to wipe a little off again on some paper. The point should hold if you make it sharp before dipping in the paint.
@The_Gryph2 жыл бұрын
@@cultofpaint Ta! Point first and then paint. I watched an interesting video by Ataraxia Painting Studio "2 warhammer painting skills no one wants to tell you about" and how she went about the physical motions of forming a point and I hadn't really thought about it until that point to be honest. She sort of rolls the brush over the index finger using the thumb to form a the point, whereas I twist with the whole wrist. Got me thinking how the chaps with the chops form thier points. Little incidental things we do that we've never really given much thought to. I wonder if there's some credence in it. Popped up on autoplay and I was kinda... "Hmmm!" About 1:30 in if you're interested. It's a tiny thing, but yeah, often so overlooked.
@invntiv2 жыл бұрын
I’ve actually found if i twist the bristles too much when i make my point in the AO series S that i get bristles that flay. I twist them wayyyy less than other brushes because i think the bristles are already twisted to i nice point when set into the ferrule.
@prickswithstix11132 жыл бұрын
You got good advice on how to get a point but all brushes are not the same whether the are sable or not. They have different spring to them and everyone has different brush pressures. Follow Andy’s advice to make the tip so it’s a natural habit. Then try different brushes until you find the type, make and model of brush that gives you the results you are looking for. Then learn how to take care of them and keep them clean. Remember they are tools and will ware out no matter how light your pressure is and how well you take care of them. Good luck!

When you look at modern firearms for reference, they are only a nice black if either babied or not used. In reality they get covered in dings and scratches. Generally these are silver, and it's only on older firearms that those marks rust. One thing I see loads on miniatures which is different to real world use is with the location of those scratches. Most often you see an equal amount of wear and tear on the flat surfaces and not just edges, particularly on one side opposed to both. For example if you are carrying a rifle you will see a load of wear in the finish on the flat surfaces which face your body, as it rubs against other gear, whereas the opposite side gets more wear from holding, brushing or pressing up against things. From that you tend to see more swirly up and down scratches on the body facing side, and more edge scratches and dirt on the outward facing side. Your painting is amazing as it is, but I just thought it might help when getting some variety in the scratches as a little extra detail if you're interested.

Great to see your progress on your army and I love the blacks you made. Can you say if Corvus Black is anywhere near to S75 Eclipse Grey? I've started my Reavers and went with a corvus black and corvus black + fenrisian grey for the highlights. I also added a blue glaze all over which I may try and tone back a bit if that turns out to be clashing too much with the rest of the army. I've followed your tutorials almost to a tee so far but the black armour is the one part I went with my own gut feeling and I'm not sure if it was a good idea. I'd LOVE to hear some critique/opinions from you on how the black looks so far compared to my earlier units. I started with a 10 man squad of MKIII marines from which I went to the MKV marines and my latest finished unit was the Contemptor. Reavers are still obviously a WIP: imgur.com/a/rvZwuT0
