I think some people are confused at why I'm so surprised about this whole thing. It's not because of the procedure itself, it's because it's done after the boy has grown up. Where I'm from, we perform the circumsicion to newborns. So of course I have no recollection of mine. The topic of circumcision is not something that people talk about openly where I'm from. There is no celebration or ceremony, it's not casually talked about among people, so that's why it's "weird" or uncomfortable for me to talk about, because we just don't where I'm from. And it should be clear, I'm not an expert of Indonesian or Islamic traditions.

This is why I like traveling and putting myself in places and situations I'm unfamiliar with. I get to learn about cultures and people that are very different from where I'm from. In America, circumcision is typically done on newborn babies. So when I learned they were having a circumcision celebration for a 10-year-old boy, I was a bit "shocked". I now know that this is a widely practiced tradition not only here in Ngadas, but also in Indonesia and many parts of the world. As a rule of thumb, I always try to do my best to be respectful to the people and places I'm visiting, no matter how different or strange I might find them. They probably think I'm pretty strange at times too 😆 Remember, there is nothing wrong or embarrassing about being ignorant about something, LEARNING always comes from a place of ignorance. Thanks for watching, more videos from Ngadas to come!

It's a symbolism of coming to adult hood. A rite of passage. And why only one boy get celebrated? Probably because his family have spare money for this kinda event. The circumtition is a religious mandatory for moslem and jewish but the celebration it just a tradition

@rizkybayudwinanda32292 жыл бұрын
Nick's giving out golden information here. Anyway, I've only watched the first 4 minutes of this video but I wanna clarify one thing. I'm not sure if this is a special case specific to the Tenggerese people, but in general, boys don't get selected for circumcision. All Muslim boys in Indonesia get circumcised when they reach puberty, like Wini Depuh (another commenter) said, and a huge celebration like this is very common. So it's not like a sacrifice where you choose a red heifer to burn on the altar. I think what the homestay owner was trying to say is that there's just one boy from one family that was getting circumcised that particular day. It's also common to have mass circumcision where boys from one locale get circumcised on the same day and the celebration is paid for in a shared manner between the families, but apparently not this one. Circumcision is usually seen as a happy occasion by boys since they could expect to receive gifts from neighbours and their parents, most commonly in the form of cash and/or toys, so boys do look forward to getting circumcised in a lot of cases. Also, circumcision for girls isn't as common, if not very rare in Indonesia. In Islam, it's mandatory for boys to be circumcised, just like in Judaism. For girls, though, the general concensus is that circumcision is recommended for purity and modesty, but it's not mandated, although there are still differences of opinion.

I need to clarify, not when they reached punerty. Usually at the age 6-10. I think most of them before puberty. And about the ceremony, Nick should know that not all the boys who get sunat have a celebration party. It depends on the capability of the family. If rhe family rich, they will make a cekebration. If not, the boy just taken to the clinuc to get sunat then just go home.
@rizkybayudwinanda32292 жыл бұрын
@@fuadnasir2944 Ah, yes. Thank you very much for providing further points. About the age of circumcision, parents and religious scholars do have different opinions depending on certain factors, such as which Islamic school of thought they belong to, the physical and emotional readiness of the boy and parents, and so on and so forth. Some even choose to circumcise their children mere days or weeks after birth. But, I think it's safe to say that puberty is the maximum point according to most. I definitely agree with your point about the celebration. It depends on the financial power of the parents. Also, another interesting thing about circumcision celebration is the amount of different styles there is. There are the traditional styles of celebration depending on which ethnicity the family belongs to, there are also more modern styles which resemble Western weddings or engagement parties, and there are also more religion-centred styles where the focus is on the boy's spiritual readiness to enter adulthood.

Corrected: the old lady told you this "I'm sorry. I can't speak dutch (she thought you speak dutch). You can speak Indonesian latter if you want to talk, please. You Will see huge ceremony involving all entire Tengger community.... Its kind huge offering to they god... And its Will happend right of the Crater of Bromo... After praying together ... All entire villagers goes to crater of Bromo... Brought all the kind of offering..... Typical like Hindu Bali do so... From fruit or one of farm product .. Chicken goat event the head of cow everything ... So many offering that they did once a year... I don't really known when its Will held .. because they have own calender to do... And all the offering throw it away to the Crater.... Its interesting and fenomenal... If you interesting ...when its Will happend... You could ask the villager or the leader or the chief ... "Yadna kasodo" (hopefully I pronaounce right)... Is very populair moment... Will be so crowd...many visitor...event foreigner tourist. I suggest you to experience it .. Ask the local when its Will going on... Note: wear sarung put it arround the sholdier like they do ... So you like one of them...haha. No need to buy.. Just borrow to the them or the owner of your homestay.... Make a friend so you could explore more ...like you did with Ibnu. Believe me ...this people is amazing. No doubt of them. Stay well ... oh man, 1 more and I would have been in double digits 😆 I was definitely more frightened than the kids, of course this is nothing new to them. The look on the kid's face is kind of telling though, I asked him if he is scared and he kinda looks puzzled like, wait, should I be scared 😆

Circumcision in Indonesia is the combination of marriage and Christmas. The boys get their own marriage-like ceremony and get Christmas-like presents

This video remembering me when i was get circumsicise. My family didnt make such a big party like that. But yes, at least i got some gift and money haha. some village in indonesia they have their own way to celebrate it. And people who get invited at least bring a gift or money in envelope. Did u give a small gift or money ? Hahaha. I suggest u if you find and get invited again like wedding party, circumsicion party, or even death (not celebration of course but mostly the will make like praying event). Bring some small gift or money in envelope. Althought i am an indonesian, i still dont know much about culture in indonesia. Its too much. Sometimes i feel like a stranger too just like u. I hope u like and enjoy living in indonesia

I think it's not only Rizky (the circumcised child) who is the center of attention, but you too (because you're the only Bule there). Hihihi 🤭😅. Dang !.,The insertion of a joke in the middle of the vlog (that those who talk also need snip-snip) make me laugh. Thank you very much Mister Nick for the entertainment vlog content,also thank you for wanting to learn the customs and culture of the Tengger tribe 👍🏻.

I always enjoy your vlogs. I mean I'm indonesian but bcoz I live in the big city I'm probably more familiar with modern american/western culture than with this rural indonesian culture. This is something new for me. Great video 🎓🎖 I remember getting circumcised when I was in 2nd grade, we don't have a huge celebration like this but I remember my parents bought me a brand new PS2 and I would play GTA San Andreas all day 🤣

Indonesia is soooo big.. and also has hundreds of local languages,,, but if we speak in bahasa indonesia, we could understand each other easily.. it is super cool, isn't it? Only few people could speak or understand english fluently, but if foreigners speak in bahasa indonesia, we will admire them.. hehe..

it's a common tradition in Indonesia to celebrate the boys' circumcisions, some have ceremonies like the one you saw

The doctor now has a more modern device for Circumcision, like a laser gun, stapler gun, etc... so it is less painful (with spray/injection anesthesia)
