We lived in Naples for 40+ years and saw the overwhelming changes that too place there. While growth was to be expected what growth that happened to Naples and Collier County was totally overboard. There was no interest by the community leaders and politicians to help control the growth. All they could see was more money. Back in the 70's they would always say that we will never allow the west coast to become like the east coast. Well it's well on it's way. The infrastructure such as roads and utilities has never been able to keep up with the growth causing many problems over the years. But again, no one in charge seems to care, it's all about build, build build. One of the saddest things is the total disregard for the history of the community and it's natives and long time residents. It's all about taking care of the newcomers and the money that they are bringing with them. There is very little history left of what was Naples years ago. Probably the worst part is what the cost of living in Naples has become. Over the years they have little by little pushed out the middle class and working families. The cost of housing whether it be owning real estate or renting has gotten totally out of control for the average working person. So many of the people that work in Naples now have to live sometimes an hour away in Lee County as they can no longer afford the cost of housing in Collier County. Don't even talk about getting insurance for your home as the cost is overwhelming that's even if you can get insurance. And if you do don't be surprised if your policy get cancelled with little to no notice. Oh, and don't forget you may need flood insurance too. Naples truly has many very nice attributes especially if your are a retired wealthy snowbird. There is the beach, golf, dining and the arts. What's not to like as long as you can afford it. But for the average working family those things don't mean a lot if they are always working to pay the cost of living there. Many of the natives and long time residents have left or are leaving as they can no longer deal with what Naples has become or can afford to live there any longer. We left and have no regrets what so ever. While Naples will always have a piece of my heart it's not for me any longer. I miss what Naples use to be not what it's become.

In fact I would venture to say they actually hate working class people. Everything they do is to get that nect dollar from the extremely wealthy and get the working class people out of here while they kick them in the ass on the way out.

Naples is screwed. Older/Wealthy and work from home folks have no idea how weak and unstable the local economy is here. This will be the worst season on record for retailers and restaurants as there are no more workers willing to live here. Naples is unaffordable for what it is. And I live here in a million dollar home and it's in a blue collar neighborhood. Not knocking it but let's be real, dropping a mill for a place in a working class neighborhood is insane. Naples will be remote workers and wealthy vacationers, the average person has no place here anymore. To the lady who says it's not hot enough, come and work my job, outside, all afternoon and all evening and tell me it's not hot enough. The heat index has been 102-107 daily. Your skin literally feels like it's melting when you work outside in Naples in the summer.

Ah ha...so that's what the future holds there. I lived in Naples/Marco Island from 2003 - 2019. The first apartment I rented was $799 a month for a brand new 2 br/2 ba on the ground floor. When I left the area in 2019 the same units were starting at $1799 a month plus parking, plus this plus that. I assure you wages did not go up. I was employed as a paralegal for over 15 years and on my return to Canada, I went back to food service. My first paycheck this season with a new employer was slightly MORE than any I ever got as a highly skilled paralegal in SWFL and for less hours...63 as opposed to 80 bi-weekly, and that didn't include CASH tips that ran about $700-$1000 a week. So yeah... there's that. AND if you work for a law firm, especially in real estate, you might as well sell your soul to the devil himself. I had a realtor complain to my boss that I appeared to be incompetent because I failed to send a pre-lim closing statement for her review. He wouldn't tell me which realtor and I was left feeling like shit over this. I later got my supervisor to tell me who complained, and went to my desk to print the email showing I had indeed sent what she requested so I felt relief that I didn't screw up, but when I asked if they were going to tactfully let her know that she "perhaps" made an error or oversight, the response I got was "well...we don't want to rock any boats with a realtor". I quit the next day.

Marco Island is being destroyed too!! My Dad came there in the eighties!! The South end is being decimated with monstrosities they are shoving into every square inch and their politicos don't care. As of now they are trying to ruining the neighborhood my Dad bought way back. Nothing like it use to be. It is very sad becoming a concrete jungle. Three n 4 story Parking garages proposed to accommodate beach goers for the day that trash and go! They forget there are real people that live there!!

We bought a retirement winter away condo in East Naples right after 9/11 when the economy was very quiet and tourism depressed. Since then the area has seen growth to the point where we do our evening dining out excursions in the fall before the Christmas rush and after Easter. For the “season” we mostly dine at home to avoid the crowds and traffic from 5 pm to 9 pm. It is no longer pleasurable to dine out when you feel the pressure to not linger, chat, and sip that final glass of wine while servers are waiting to clear your table for the next reservation.

This video makes me so sad because Naples is not the sleepy fishing village it used to be. My husband was born here in 1950 (died in 2016). I moved here in 1964. If we did not build our house in 1980, we would not be able to live here. The average American can not afford to live here. The poor service workers can not afford to live here. It's very sad.

My grandpa moved from chicago to.naples in 1974. He bought his house for $110k and sold it in 2008 for $2.6mm. Was a block north from 5th and the 2nd row off the beach.

Great video! I'm from New Hampshire, but my dad lives in Naples. I visited on Thanksgiving back in 2012 and enjoyed myself immensely. I decided to buy a guitar at a local pawn shop, and I took it out to the pier one night just to hang out and play. There weren't that many people around, so I knew I wasn't going to bother anyone. After a while, several people gathered around and started singing along. We all hung out for a couple of hours, singing and having a good old time. One couple who was there invited me over to their place for a barbecue the next evening. Of course, I brought along my guitar along, and we had an amazing time. 20 or so people singing and partying on a spectacular fall evening. Beautiful 70-degree weather. Made some new friends. After a week, I flew home to New Hampshire to find snow on the ground.

Choosing where to live should depend on what you personally like do to with your time, and what you're willing to sacrifice in order to be able to do those things. I'm 100% certain you'll find something to complain about, no matter where you live. No such thing as "the perfect place".

I lived in Naples and taught there for 15 years. I loved it when I came in 2000. But when I moved to the other coast of FL, it had changed so much. I will never regret living there and on Marco Island. Some of the best times of my life were there....But it's uber expensive now, so maybe look more north of FL. But again, I loved living there.

NAPLES FL has become too crowded and expensive and I mean expensive. I’ve been here 22 years and there’s a condo going up on every block and street and in a couple years traffic is only going to be ridiculous. If you have a condo, the HOA fees have exploded, if you rent the rent is horrific, if you buy a house, the insurance and property taxes are out of sight so it’s only becoming a place for the millionaire billionaire club.

I was basically raised in Naples for over 25 years. Over the years, we were pushed back into the golden gate estate (basically 45mins - 1hr away from downtown Naples) because trying to live near the downtown area is too expensive. I do love Naples, but I'm in the tech area, and Naples isn't the area for young tech people.

I’ve been coming to Naples since the Seventies and owned a winter residence there for the last 20 years. The Winter is wonderful and perfect. The Summers are horrendous with heat, humidity, and rain. My property insurance is unbelievably high and even my auto insurance is twice what I pay in Ohio. Invasive creatures, like the poisonous toads that have killed many dogs, have also been a recent problem.

Property insurance is a nightmare -- insurers are leaving the state due to climate change, and the ones who are here are increasing rates by 25% and more, after these rates had already quadrupled since 2005-6, and more than doubled in the past 3 years. It is very difficult to even find a market to write here, which tells me the carriers think we are all screwed.... need I say more. Affordable housing - must be addressed to sustain the current infrastructure. Not enough will be done, and there will be workers commuting long distances to serve the needs of the very rich. Shame on our government for not investing in people so they can earn a living wage, and for not addressing real estate scams that overinflate our property values. The current bubble of pricing is going to pop (again) at some point, and of course blame will be delved out by all, but it really is no oversight on loan underwriting techniques so that some few at the top get even richer, while keeping the average man/woman down. Healthcare - no doctors take HMO plans in Naples, and while there are dentists on every corner, if you have an abscess or wisdom tooth coming in, you'll be forced to see a dentist for a "consult" and referral, only to have to wait another 2 weeks for an another "consult" appt, w/ no extraction in sight. It is very frustrating. The smaller doctor's offices are bought up by a large group, like Millennium, but that is also the story for America, so in this regard, it's a wash. Education, and the state of Florida, has seen the worst attacks on public education in all 50 states, thanks to the Governor's "Don't Say Gay" bill, & book banning, and with there being no affordable housing and a huge influx of people, the schools cannot handle it, and they are building dorms for new teachers while keeping salaries of existing, long term, dedicated teachers, at a trickling spout. My friends who are educators who never posted about politics are now becoming more vocal, because their own personal security are being threatened (safety, financial, freedom of speech, civil rights). On the positive side, Law & Order AND Mental Health Services -- we live in a bubble - thanks to the Collier County Sherriff's Office. I must say I back the blue. They have kept Naples probably one of the most cared for community when it comes to crime, or at least that's my perspective. I know this just be visiting or working in other surrounding cities. Naples also is a hub for wellness and recovery, with Hazeldon / Betty Ford downtown, The Willough, David Lawrence Center, and St Matthew's House. The Weather - it seems water spouts are now the new normal, and 110 feels like temps with crippling levels of humidity. If you have allergies, it's worse, and most of us do.

Well said especially about the property Insurance, I too have been reading about companies pulling out of Fla. It's one big shit show. The affordable housing situation is a nightmare and dispicable to say the least. But I do have to say I've worked at Naples Community Hospital, & now work at Physicians Regional Hospital & I can 100% tell you that Dr.s here DO TAKE HMO INSURANCE I see these plans every day. Different Dr.s take different plans that's why one needs to check with their insurance provider to see which Drs they can go to.

The property insurance issue is a Florida issue and Naples has done nothing to cause it. It is driven by overdevelopment in east coast costal cities (specifically south beach) Regarding HMO plans; while there has been an influx of concierge medicine into Naples, that is to be expected with an increased tax base. A 20 minute drive solves that issue as does the lack of affordable housing. Affordable housing is not a rite and just because a certain city or area has seen an increase in real estate value as well as influx of wealthy residents does not mean that affordable housing needs to be built on prime real estate. Again a 20 minute drive solves that issue. Your comments on education are anecdotal at best and Florida ranks in the top ten percent of public education in the country (which is extremely impressive in a state that does collect income tax). Look at Maryland and Michigan as examples. Obviously everyone reading this comment knows your politics (and I don’t care who you vote for) but if you are going to bring politics into play, at least don’t attribute statewide issues to a specific town.

As a kid in the 80's we used to be able to ride our bikes to the beach without parents and fish all day long and catch lots of Snook and no one would harass you about it. US 41 was one lane in each direction. That was just before Pelican Bay was built by Westinghouse. Pelican Bay used to be hunting grounds for Bear, Turkey, and deer. The yards were just normal grass or rock and were not over fertilized magazine cover jobs that add to this Red Tide problem we have now. We didn't have Red tide like this back then. The schools and sports fields were not locked down to keep the kids out during the weekend. There was a U-pick-it farm where the Creekside plaza is now. It's sad that place no longer exists.

Naples from 87 to leaving before the late 90's , moved there very very young and left a teenager and could bike and feel safe, Tin City was super laid back and fun, nothing crowded, 3rd and 5th Ave. relaxed and super chill strolling, totally different vibes and it makes me want to cry, used to be able to go with friends to Ben N' Jerry's and play all around Pelican Bay (I did not have any idea of how priviledged I was at the time but it was SO SO much chill and lowkey, you could just chill out and swim, snorkle, think maybe once only there was a red tide, ONCE) ..........looks like "The Villages" on steroids/crack now

There are 2 extremes in SW Florida. I lived waterfront in Vamo Sarasota. The lap of luxury. Drive a little off the beaten path and venture into surrounding areas. Aside from the beggars at intersections, the homeless are living in the woods on the outskirts of town. Southern Living did a podcast showing where the homeless encampments are today. Jose is born and bred in Naples. His podcasts cover all the Southern states.

Naples has gotten to big for us. We moved a few miles further north to Boca Grande. We are an island community with a toll to get onto island. Our biggest tourist visitors are iguanas. They’ve checked in but not leaving.

Not sure if that’s “doable“ in the $350,000 to $400,000 range… But, we would be open to visiting down there from the Pacific Northwest to find out. It would be interesting to hear about cost for living in Naples or any other part of the west coast of Florida? Even if I pay cash for a house or condo, there are costs for insurance, property tax and probably other things I'm not even aware of? We live in Sweden and visit SW FL yearly. I lived in Naples for over twenty years. When a huge price bubble allowed me to sell my house at a large profit I moved to Puerto Rico where you can live much better on a beautiful tropical island. I do not like how Naples has changed.

I grew up in Naples and this isn't the same town I grew up in. In the late 80s and 90s I lived directly across from cambier Park on the corner of 8th and 8th. My mom rented our 3 bedroom house for 350 a month. 5th Ave closed at 5 o'clock and now there isn't even a tree I used to climb. None of the houses exist anymore. The town I grew up in is gone. It was an awesome place to be a kid. Now most the people who lived and worked in Naples can't afford to live there.

Naples is only for older people so if u got kids or ur an adult who wanna party, this ain’t the place for you. Peaceful, but so boring for younger people.

I've seen just about every Beach town in South Florida and I didn't like Naples. It has restaurants and it's kind of opulent but it's not very visitor friendly at the beaches. The traffic is terrible for a small town.

We have a place in North Naples we purchased in 2019. So far we have been renting it out during peak season, visiting in spring, summer, fall and December. In July people at the pool all agreed. We love the summer. Walk into a restaurant and sit down. No traffic. No lines in the stores. Played 18 holes in 2 hours, on two different days. If you're hot, jump in the pool. Can't wait to move from snowy NY.

I looked at Naples, pretty extensively, and the real estate prices didn't give the value for what I was looking to spend. I was in the market for something between 1.5m and 2.2m Ended up buying in St Augustine. I got a lot more for my money in St Augustine. But Naples is an amazing place.

Great video. But how about interviewing people who don't have multi million dollar portfolios.? It's way expensive to live here in Naples, and south Florida in general. The building boom is nuts. The road infrastructure is NOT keeping up and traffic in season is just ridiculous. The worst drivers in all the world are here. I wish everyone would get off their phones while they drive. Otherwise you can't beat the weather.oh almost forgot...not enough boat ramps or access to the water

I’ve been here since 1984. It was paradise. Then in the mid 90s we had Stadium Naples and the Commissioners arrested for bribes. They paved over paradise. It’s NYC with palm trees now. They paved over paradise

I moved to Florida(not Naples area)from Illinois in 2017.I love it but am rely dismayed at the way developers run everything in the state to the disregarding of nature and keeping things on a human scale.BTW I live in a house that was built in 1947.

As a teen and student, Naples is honestly a pretty boring place tbh. Yes, we got an amazing beach and amazing housing, but that's pretty much it. There isn't really much to do besides spend money shopping for cloths or going out to some fancy restaurant. The most interesting thing is probably a bowling ally on Goodlette, but besides that, I usually just drive up to Fort Myers to do something fun.

It's interesting to see these comments. We live in Miami Beach and that has become a nightmare (dirty streets, homeless, shootings, drugs, violence) vs its peak in the 90s when it was glamorous , safe and fun. We are moving to Naples to get away from it and it cracks me up that people think 5th avenue and Naples has traffic when you can park for free and avoid it and it's really minimal vs a big city (I guess it's all relative). Folks in Naples either don't know how good they have it or have not lived in a big city. My opinion of Naples after coming here for over 20 years is consistent with this video-a real paradise.

Whenever you see constant start-up businesses such as restaurants, etc., and within a few years go out of business, think about illegal money being laundered. Illegal money is what built Miami and other cities on the east coast. Now it is happening more than ever on the SW Gulf Coast.

I was born and raised here also. Boy has this place changed! And not necessarily for the better!!! Agree with Aisha. But not about potholes but some of pavement work and rain run off. There are ruts in 951 (my route home after work) that hold water after storms and can cause ya to hydroplane big time! Infrastructure wise, we have more people maintaining medians then waste water and storm water. When you see 3 county employees with clipboards standing around a dead palm tree in the median, and after 5mins of diliberation they simply wrap some orange tape around it, and then you see 1 guy riding in a crane service truck to pull sewer pumps... you may have your priorities wrong!!! I should know... I was that lone guy in that truck! Now I work at the treatment plant and have found 1980's crap held together with 200mph tape!!! The same plant that makes that very important reuse water that keeps the grasses green so you all can hit a lil white ball around with your sticks!!! Same grass that also requires a sh!t ton of fertilizers and pesticides... that eventually leaches into the water table.!.! But I've said and vented enough. I may have said to much. Just what I've said alone may gets me into hot water if someone in the county reads these things. But just in case if someone does... here's another lil tid bit! Your medians are stupid! 1st and foremost safety wise... I would like to see if someone going other direction gets hit in their rear bumper and turned towards me on other side of median into a head on collision!!! And not at the very last second as they plow threw the bushes 2ft away from my drivers door!!! 2nd of all... your not fooling anyone. All those plants are not like a picturesque scenic winding curvy road up north where you would see huge beautiful trees and the changing of the seasons threw the color changing of the leaves! It is quite frankly a perfectly straight straightaway, north to south, east to west FREEWAY that was designed to get people to and from their far away homes because you priced em out from being closer in.!.! 3rd is all that d@mn irrigation overspray water flowing across all 3 lanes spraying all over my nice clean car!!! And why? When you have nice clean sidewalks on either sides of the road! What... you don't think people walking and riding wouldn't enjoy the plants and flowers and maybe a lil shade!?!? Maybe they can stop and smell the roses! Not me in the fast lane!!! 4th... PALM FRONDS!!! That get blown off in afternoon thunderstorms!!! Into the fast lane, causing person to swerve out of way, potentially into rear bumper of car in middle lane, and then turning them into the median, as before mentioned IN THE 1ST PLACE!!!!!! And last... if you haven't ever had the pleasure to have a laugh watching that poor mower guy try and get his mower up over the curbing, trust me it's Tik Tok material, then you need to put your phone down and take a look around! (but seriously plz do, his life matters to me, he's as blue collar as I am!!!) I mean they could't even put a cutout ramp into curb somewhere in the turning lanes for him to transition up onto the grass.!.! I mean sometimes amateurs just make me lmFao!!! My quote for all time. Grandmother moved to Naples in the late 80’s. It was a special place in the 80’s & 90’s and I treasured my time there. The neat eclectic shops and my first time at the pier. It makes me sad how it’s changed-and it’s not for the better.

I genuinely think unless you are born and raised in Florida it's a tough transition! I think you have to be a certain person and think a certain way to enjoy living in Florida. I moved from Orange County California to Land O lakes and there isn't a day that goes by where I don't regret it. I moved to FL to get on the housing ladder which I am finally on! But do I enjoy living in FL with the humidity, gloom, rain, bugs, Flat terrain and urban sprawl? Absolutely not!

As a hard working hands on tradesman, South Coast England landlord who comes round straight after a phone call {yes tenants have my home number] to fix a problem. These monied " passive income" hands off people who '' acquire property assets" like the Canadians are a pain. Believe it or not managing agents are not that good at their job, repairs don't get done in a timely fashion. Could the guy empathise with a tenant ?

for the blue collar worker naples is way to expensive to buy a house now i do pest control and make a decent living but i moved to san carlos park to buy a house i payed 230k for a 3 bedroom 2 bath home on a double corner lot 1900 scare foot under air. Try to find that in naples and you will not. So now i drive 30 to 40 minutes to do pest control in naples during Sesson somtimes it a 1 hour drive home in bumper to bomber traffic

After listening to this the only one who said it exactly right was the lady that owned the outdoor facility. She was absolutely spot on. Folks that are here now have no idea what it was like 40 years ago. The population today is just a little over 400,000. In 81 the population was around 81,000. What a big difference and honestly I'm not happy about it. Our small town is no longer that and it's been corrupted yearly by ignorant politicians and etc. Being a blue collar worker is a serious struggle here and always has. Those who have it made don't see it through the lives of regular citizens and look down on us. That I've experienced over the years. It's a love hate thing. I've been to other areas and know how much better it is here. In that regard, there isn't any place I'd rather be. Just wish things would get better for the average blue collar worker here.

Way, way too expensive for the averaged person. Labor shortage everywhere and none of the folks can afford to live there to work there, so it's a crappy Catch-22. So much traffic, too many people. Summers are brutal. It is pretty, though, and winters are a dream if you can afford it, I'll say that.
