Welcome to Cummins Repower Garage. As a team of enthusiasts, we know that many questions come up during a build. With that in mind, we created this video series to take our customers through the R2.8 Turbo Diesel Installation Manual. Throughout the series, the Cummins Repower team highlights useful installation tips and tricks to answer some of the most common questions about installing the R2.8 Turbo Diesel crate engine.
In this eighth video, we cover topics related to the exhaust system for the R2.8 Turbo Diesel.

“ We put this DOC thingy on the engine to meet epa regs. But although it’s passive and the ecm can’t detect its presence DONT TAKE IT OFF (wink wink). But in case you need to take it off for .... ummm ... installation purposes, here’s how to do it (wink wink 😉)”. Love it. Can’t wait to get my r2.8

I cleaned out my DOC and blocked off the EGR on my company pickup. Better fuel milage and power increase. Planning on doing a 3" exhaust. If you have emissions regulations then you probably should leave the DOC. Edit: We did the 3 inch exhaust and it really shines at higher rpm. When towing heavy and you overtake a truck., huge difference. Also the software needs to be in your favour. BS90023 is the non-emissions software with 161HP. These engines are absolutely amazing!

Deleteing the motor helps the motor run better and it doesn’t make a difference on the environment being deleted or not

Good stuff, this dpf and def crap I'm running on my 2018 6.7 cummins is awful and unreliable and terrible for the motor... hoping this technology will come to the legendary inline 6 in the RAM 2500/3500 platforms.

It won't. The DOC was replaced by the DPF and SCR systems to further reduce exhaust emissions. DOC was only the first step. DOC doesn't reduces NOx emissions or particulate matter.

Would this power a ‘75 chev k10 adequately? I don’t want a power house, just efficient and torquey.

If, a 2.5in exhaust works well, then is it still ok to run a 3in single exhaust with a typical gas muffler? I just like the looks of a 3in, but wouldn't want negatively impact back pressures. Thanks

It could do no harm. Only lower EGTs, better fuel milage and more responsive throttle.

Steve, you say there is no reason to move the "DOC" or downpipe for install and you mention the Jeep TJ is passenger (US) right hand drop front axle as evidence of this... but your Jeep TJ there is driver (US) left hand drop front diff. For a UK install into a Land Rover the "DOC"/Downpipe looks to be exactly where the front drive shaft would run to our right hand drop front differential. Would there be any work around for this? Also are there any plans for Cummins Repower in the UK? It would be something my business and myself would be interested in. I cannot seem to get any decent responses from Cummins UK, they don't seem particularly bothered with is disappointing, hopefully I can get some answers here?

Hi, Nick. We’ve had customers perform R2.8 swaps into vehicles that are both passenger side as well as driver side drop. Some cases are easier or harder than others, but it can be done. We plan on filming and posting future videos on actual builds, so we can highlight some of these challenges and workarounds in those episodes. We are also investigating the emissions impact of allowing the DOC to be mounted downstream - the key to its operation is heat, so the farther downstream the less effective it is. As far as Cummins Repower UK, we are interested in expanding the program beyond the United States and Canada, so stay tuned for future announcements regarding additional markets!

Yeah, definitely gonna delete the DOC on mine. All it does is make things more complex than they need to be.

Warning This thing is made in CHINA!!!!! And has a terrible track record! Cummins has sold out!!!!!

Roland B The block for the r2.8 is machined in China but its assembled in the USA (Columbus plant). I have “heard” that this engine has a “terrible track record”, but when I research on my own I can find no evidence to support it. This “terrible track record “ myth seems to be from two particular diesel repower companies that DON’T offer the r2.8 and believe their non-Cummins solutions are better. The r2.8 has a 2year 2800 hour warranty (;one of those diesel repower shops claims its only 60 days). The ISF2.8 (the Chinese OEM version) did have some issues at first. But The ISB 5.9 and ISB 6.7 both had teething problems as well (the 53 series blocks and DPF issues come to mind). But that doesn’t make them have a “terrible track record”. They are still more reliable and dependable than anything else on the market. I’m seriously considering a r2.8 repower. The only other two considerations are the b3.9t and b3.3t only because there may may a cost savings
