I have a winter home in the Philippines. I just bought a Chinese-made pickup truck there called a Foton thunder (4-door 4x4) brand new, 2019, for USD $20,000......It has - from the factory - a Cummins 2.8 turbo-diesel, Gertrag 5-speed manual transmission, a Borg-Warner transfer case, and Dana axles. It is Great !! Used to own some semi's, always loved Cummins....

This would be a great conversion, we just got back from a trip from VA to Alabama and we passed all the gassers on the uphill grades without even falling out of overdrive, no drop in speed no freewheeling down the grades, 30mpg loaded with luggage and equipment. I would say this is worth the money if you travel.

Really cool idea and our hats off to the guys at Cummins for the attempt. These will make many TJ owners happy. The issue with putting these into anything remotely modern (anything newer than 2000 Jeeps etc) is integrating these custom powertrains into vehicles that are almost entirely computer controlled. Transmission controls, onboard instrumentation, cruise control and safety systems, etc. will all need to talk to each other and be custom-programmed. This amounts to a ton of electrical wiring and programming. As such, this will be costly to implement on many levels. Guys hoping for a sub $10k diesel swap will be sorely disappointed. Secondly, emissions compliance. For those hoping to install one of these into a 2005+ Tacoma etc. I'm afraid you wont have a Cummins certificate of compliance anytime soon. In order to be compliant, these engines will need to have treatment systems and Cummins would need to certify the installation for each vehicle. This is both ridiculously expensive and complicated. Cummins can sell these for TJ Jeeps and older Landcruisers because these vehicles are grandfathered in due to age. We actually prototyped these engines a few years ago in a 2008 Tacoma and they performed really well.

There should be a 3 engine line of Repower engines in addition to the 2.8l I4 diesel, a 215 hp 3.8L I4 based of the ISF3.8L, and a 5.0L V8 based off the ISV5.0. A Repower for everyone.

I'm glad cummins is doing this and I'm glad it's causing excitement. The Rep is right the numbers don't tell the full story, but I feel as if this is more of a niche product than most commentators are making this out to be. It makes 160hp, and 250 ftlbs I'm sure it gets good fuel mileage and a flat diesel power curve is great. but still...I won't be rushing out buying one of these.

Everyone is so worried about out put numbers. It's known that it isn't hard to 'wake' up a diesel and get more power out of them. I'm sure the low starting numbers are a result of this being emission compliment with a broad number of vehicles. It will be interesting when companies like efi live release tuning options for this and people start deleting and tuning them. Then I'm sure compound will surely follow quickly afterwards.
@mattlane22827 жыл бұрын
So don't worry about spending alot of money for no power cause you can always spend more! and um, they were talking about fuel costs like this would save money lol.
@TjEvo17 жыл бұрын
Matt Lane tuning and deleting is fairly basic practice with diesels now a days. And as much as it would cost to swap it would not out way the fuel savings, but going on a trip or off road trip the amount of miles you get on a trip can be a big space saver and very convenient when going for longer trips. Along with the power to turn the larger tires when highway driving is a benefit as well. Also, this program is targeting a very wide market, but the immediate people they are after are the ones who are doing build and are yet to have a power plant. This Cummins directly competes with the ls crate options on the market.
@Nothingtoya7 жыл бұрын
Matt Lane if you're only getting 10 mpg and struggle to go 70 down the highway, this is a good option. I'm planning on buying an XJ with a better body next year and really thinking about doing this swap

By the time I was on the highway, I was over 7,500 lbs. Mpg was consistent from Wyoming to Corpus Christi, with a long stop in heavy traffic in Houston. For anyone that plans to buy this kit, get an EFI live tune, better exhaust, and a good intake, I have no doubt you can achieve 28+ with those mods.

I bought this because the engine placement makes it within reach for service, and using a wheelchair makes a van the best option for me, that and I put a bed in it for sleeping. The 302 is murder, the stock/original engine musters about 10 MPG at best, and forget towing, it just doesn't have enough power to do it.

Yay finally a motor like those in Australia! Sounds like its going to really take the market by storm depending on the cost. Any idea of the price for one of these engines?

Gary Cloud I believe they're going to be around $8k. Steve at Cummings has said to expect to be roughly the same cost as the LS Erod.

Gary Cloud. They are in Australia. Foton Cummins China make these engines and they installed in most Foton Tunlands etc. I have a 2015 foton view royal saloon which looks like a toyota hiace commuter. Power wise craps all over any hiace I've driven but they aren't old enough yet to see if the longevity is there.

I built the land cruiser that's my AV after they announced these motors.... that was 2 years ago. We still have no clue how much they're going to cost.
