Judging from the large straight 6 engines of the past I would think that a st 6 over 400 cubic inches would be an absolute beast . Taking into account the modern fuel injections and electronic engine controls to keep it running at peak performance and maybe a forced air system I would think this engine could make incredible torque .

What makes the original Cummins so good, especially the 03/04 is that they are not overly complicated. I have a 2008 Dodge 2500 with the Cummins. I have enjoyed the truck but the engine doesn't get the fuel mileage I had hoped to get and the EPA emissions stuff is really not worth driving a diesel powered truck. I don't drive the miles I used to drive so I'm going back to a gas engine. From what I read on line, all the HD versions of the Ram gas engines require premium gas, which makes it more expensive than the diesel fuel I'm buying now. Certain people are trying to force everyone to go EV but EV has a lot of problems right now. First, few charging stations; Second, chargers are not standardized across the country or in the industry; Third, the source of the lithium is not in the US or Canada but in China, Ukraine, or Afghanistan (but not being mined right now); Fourth, when the batteries wear out the disposal will become a major problem for all States. Maybe in 20 years it will be viable, but it isn't there yet.

Diesel isn't going anywhere. Its energy density ensures that.... it will be the ultimate fuel source for trucks expected to tow heavy loads for long distances well into the future. Modern emissions systems means they'll still have a future. Could maintenance continue to increase due to those systems? Possibly. But you won't see diesel fading from the heavy duty trucks anytime soon. But likewise there are applications for these work trucks where gas makes more sense. HD trucks will see ICE engines, both diesel and gas, continue on for a long time.

It is going to happen and I am sure they will just add the gasoline option and keep the existing diesel option as it is. There has been rumor and confirmation that they are discontinuing the HEMI motors in the next couple years, leaving the door open for a HD gas motor to compete with the segment. The current 6.4 and ZF 8 speed is an incredible powertrain. I think it would be impressive to see both gas and diesel Cummins motors paired with that 8 speed (or heavier variant) to further compete with the current offerings from GM and Ford.

An inline six gasoline engine with an emphasis on truck use? Sign me up. The ford 300 straight six, the dodge slant six, the AMC 4.0 inline six, and even the highly underrated gm 4.2 inline six were all great engines. They produced reliable power and inline 6 engines are great for torque, vibration, reliability, and a great power band. There's a reason bmw, nissan, Toyota, and mercedes have all been famous for using i6 engines in high output applications as well as the inlines being used in trucks and off road applications. This bodes well to me. It would be a huge competition to the ford 7.3 which is also proving to be a terrific engine as a lower cost option over the $10,000 extortion of getting a diesel.

More power don't have to change the head my step up is going to be have the throttle body before the turbo and a water to air intercooler to shorten the length of the intake for better throttle response with a riser plate with injectors in it. This give you a basic engine brake better mpg and more power plus not crazy expensive and saves money

It's important to note that a gasoline engine would be the basis for a CNG variant. That is becoming increasingly important in the commercial truck world. Hydrogen will also be important in the future. Ford also has hydrogen engines in the works according to recent reports. That appears to be an admission that BEV may not be feasible for all applications. The hydrogen infrastructure is small, but it only requires water and electricity to generate. It also can be stored, meaning it can be generated using solar panels during the day or the excess power from nuclear plants at night. Hydrogen can be burned in an ICE configuration or used to power a fuel cell.

Personally I’m thinking my next setup will be powered by propane. You can order a Ford 7.3 with a propane prep package (not sure about the others from the factory). The technology that Roush & other similar systems use today means you can easily power your truck using both gasoline (on startup & when the propane tank runs empty) & propane. Propane provides the same amount of horsepower & torque and I can buy it for around $2 a gallon compared to 4 plus for gas & 5 plus for diesel. Another major benefit is your motor runs cleaner for far longer which means 300k to 400k miles should be achievable when running on primarily propane.

I suspect the Cummins is primarily being developed for Class 4-6 trucks since there's always been a niche for LNG-CNG-LPG power for those even if only from gas utilities (which is why GM offered gasoline V8s in the Topkick/Kodiak until it was discontinued at which point Ford picked up the option after many years of being diesel-only above the F350), and it's one that's likely to go a lot more mainstream.

Yes, I would like to see a gasoline-fueled Cummins 6.7 in the Ram. Cummins is not new to spark-ignited engines. They have a subsidiary in Clovis, New Mexico called Cummins Natural Gas Engines that has produced natural gas versions of Cummins diesels for decades. These engines are mostly used on irrigation pumps in the southwest. Cummins also developed lean-burn natural gas engines in the mid-1990's for on-highway applications. I was the mechanical development engineer on the 8.3L natural gas way back then, and really liked that engine. If Cummins does it the same as their natural gas conversions of diesel engines, they will put lower compression pistons in the shortblock, then optimize the valve facings and seat materials for gasoline/ethanol fuels. In the lower end, anything below the piston would be the same as the diesel, so the engine would last twice forever. Being able to eliminate the DPF, SCR, and EGR systems would lower the weight of the total powertrain, decrease cost, and improve reliability. Cummins could further reduce the engine weight if they switch the cylinder head material to aluminum. They haven't done that in the past on their natural gas engines, but it would make sense for the HD pickup application, where Ford and GM engines all have aluminum heads. The big question for me is will the engine be direct or port injected? I can think of pros and cons for either system.

Reference (NA) naturally Asperated. You are correct the 6.4L HEMI is actually 390.5cid but advised as a 392cid HEMI is a big disappointment in RAM 2500 and up. Reason is NA 6.4L in a RAM 2500 and up is only rated at 410hp. Yet that vey engine in a Challenger or Charger NA is rated at 485hp/476lb touqure. Now that would of been an excellent HD truck engine but was terribly detuned in the RAM. Even GM/Chevy 6.2L 378cid NA is rated at 420hp and a whopping 460lb torque. Get this, the 6.2L is available in the Silverado 1500 unlike the RAM 6.4L is not available in their RAM 1500. The 5.7L HEMI in a RAM is rated at 395hp @ 410lb torque. That is actually more power than a 5.7L HEMI NA both the Challenger, Charger and Chrysler 300M and Sport. Remember the old 340cid was only rated with a 6pac carborator setup was only 290hp but real time dyno after factory market rated at a mere 320hp but at the at 5500rpm or factory redline. In comparison the 5.7L HEMI NA 345cid only five more cubic inches than the old 340 produces in a RAM NA 395hp. That's what the power of a modern day HEMI can do. The RAM on average 5.7L NA at the flywheel actually produces on most DYNOS between 405~410hp as for insurance purposes factory usually under rates its flywheel hp numbers. RAM or Chrysler products are all over the place with its engine specs and what engines end up in what vehicle applications. Some just do not make much sense. I would not purchase the new hurricane twin turbo 6 HO for the first three years of production. By then it may be 2026 and fully electric RAMS will have been in production for two years and just maybe technologically even better then first though for EV production. Meaning powered by two 800hp or 1600 total hp AWD with much needed and & doable 500 to 700 mile ranges/full charge and full recharge cycles in a mere 15 to 45 minutes. Torque rating would be a frame twisting 1500 and up lbs torque. All that and you also get killer auxiliary power for other tasks and no more dealing with messy dirty fluid changes, no more expensive tuneups. No more exhaust systems and catalyst converters theft and parts repair and replacement. The benefits will quickly overcome the shock and sadness of the old ICE days. In all reality it's all about EV power supplies and convince that will come with range fear and full charge time. Certainly the standards of EV hp and torque will be celebrated. That 90plus percent of EVs will have a very welcomed as standard equipment smart AWD. The EV costs of purchasing and serving will come down to current vehicle by economic ratios affordability for all income levels just like our current vehicles of today.

I was thinking the something similar. 3 cylinder diesel would supply energy to charged batteries and would run even while parked, if selected, to get the battery to full charge while you are away from the vehicle. It could run on battery alone or if it drops below a certain percentage of charge the diesel would turn on to start charging. Plug it in at night and next morning be at 100%. You could have 1000 hp vehicle with a 3 cylinder, 40 hp motor with 180 lb/ft torque and 500 mile range. If you were pulling a heavy load at 40 mph in slow traffic, the motor charging the batteries could still be running at 1800 rpm to keep the batteries charged or just turn off because the batteries are above 60% charge.

Hydrogen has its issues too. Namely steel embittelment, and really low range unless very high storage pressures are used, and very low energy density. H2 production cost really isn't that great either. Finally most H2 on the market is made from cracking natural gas. So in that case you may as well just used natural gas or liquify it into either methonol or syn-gas at a price that is lower that hydrogen and simpler to adapt to current technology. Syn-gas if developed the right way is also carbon neutral. Hydrogen obviously can be produced carbon free via electrolysis from green sources. Future will likely be a combination of battery, hydrogen, syn-gas, ammonia and traditional fuels. Atleast until we can all get a Mister Fusion at the local Walmart.

It would probably weigh in at 600-800#’s due to aluminum head , they’d probably have a lighter crank & thinner block for the petro variant . All would still be ultra durable & amazingly smooth running with gobs of torque over the v6/v8 engines . Making them also the work horse to beat & outperform . Look at jeep when they ran the 4.2 & 4.0ho inline six . Those were such amazing engines that would need a v8 to be outperformed by .

I would love to see Cummins venture into other power plants but just because a great company like Cummins makes it doesn’t guarantee it will be good. The Cummins 5.0 V8 Diesel in the Nissan didn’t seem to take off and is no longer available in the platform. Not sure if Cummins still produces it for other applications or not. I think in todays market, the Diesels with all their complexity are becoming a problem in many companies and they need more cost effective and simpler options. A reliable gas powered truck with decent power is just the trick. Todays gas engines are generating the power of Diesel engines from 10-15 years ago. In many applications that is more then enough power to do the job effectively and at a much lower purchase and operations cost.

Frankly Tommy, I don't think it matters what engine is being used. As you noted, smaller engines are being forced to do harder jobs. Thus they have shorter life spans. But that too does not matter in the grand scheme of things, because marketing has convinced a high % of people to own a vehicle for less than 5 years. So, engine life spans can be shorter. When people were buying a truck and keeping it 15-25 years or more at a time, a bigger block engine with a life expectancy of 150-300K miles was expected. Now, people are flipping trucks before they hit 100K miles.

Cummins has been in natural gas for many years. Quite a few of the familiar engine families in diesel are or were available in natural gas. Its cost effective in my mind anyway to pump out the same block and rotating assembly with different pistons, or maybe they lower the compression all in the head. But this is not new, but new to every day consumers. A 6.7 inline n/a or turbo will essentially be big brother to one of the best inline 6 gas jobs built, ford's 300 cu. in. I-6 But again I think it would be mostly compatible with 6.7 diesel just to keep product availability and costs on Cummins end lower, but maybe not. I like my 6.7, wish Ram offered Eaton options along side of that synchronized aluminum MB transmission. I'm biased though. Have a 53 block vp44 truck not cracked with the nv4500 had a 1st gen ve with the g360. Still have the engine which is in my 1949 Cat D2. I'm a fan you could say. I know most of the reasons why people get a diesel is for torque and the exhaust brake. Haven't really heard much about an exhaust brake on a gas truck from factory and they obviously work way better than the gas engine just from your guy's tests. I'd say make the cng version first but it be an additive like Def but see if I can get rid of the emissions cause of how clean it would burn. No choke from emissions mean more reliability and more of the cummins noise we love and less people deleting them to make them last and efficient

Stelantis has already said the Hemi will be going away. So it makes perfect sense for this engine to replace that in the HD trucks. It will certainly be very heavy, but should make a ton of power. And without many of the costs related to the diesel. Though it will still have expensive services if it truly uses the same bottom end. But cheaper fuel, no DEF. Though purchase price will most likely be more than what a current 6.4L is.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around how they plan to use a "similar" bottom end. The diesel is a long stroke, overbuilt for compression ignition. That's not what you want in an auto cycle gas engine.

@@Stuka87 They're both undersqaure, but 6.7L is still a longer stroke, with a 0.86 bore-stroke ratio in the B6.7 vs 0.96 in the AMC 258. Also, it's still a diesel with large bore spacing for robustness. That's just wasteful with lower compression auto ignition. Also, keep in mind that this isn't the 1970s anymore, it's 2022. Long stroke engines tend to produce more NOx emissions due higher compression. While some gas engines today do have undersqaure cylinders, most don't because compliance would be harder today with undersqauring, particularly for a large displacement engines.
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 2 жыл бұрын
@@AkioWasRight Stroke has little impact on compression ratio. Thats cylinder volume and piston/combustion chamber volume. A current pentastar V6 has 11.3:1 compression, it passes emissions fine. Most NA engines are high compression. Is the 6.7L block overbuilt for a gas online design, perhaps. But companies like BMW do this same thing. The B58 in a new Supra is a Diesel block used in a gas configuration because its very strong. Also, the Cummins gas engine could be Aluminum.
