In preparation for swapping this 5.9 Cummins into my GMC C3500HD, I replace the vacuum pump, fit a 200 amp GM alternator, and paint the engine.

Seen that you have the 53 block. It has inherently thin water jacket walls that are susceptible to cracking. Frequent and/or heavy towing, failing to let an engine properly warm after a cold start, and engine overheating can contribute to the development and propagation of cracks in the water jackets of these engine blocks.

Not sure how big of an issue the 53 block really is. It seems very hit and miss. These trucks are now 20+ years old, you’d figure they would have failed by now. I had one in a 99 Dodge and I beat the living dog crap out of that truck with bigger turbo and injectors. For safe measure maybe keep an eye out for a non-53 block and build that up for a towing application? Compound turbos, P-Pump, studs, etc.

Awesome videos, man! I just realized this was a 53 block 24v, though! Yikes! I’m not sure how deeply you’ve gone into the Cummins rabbit hole, but the 53 blocks are highly susceptible to cracking and failure. Best of luck on the channel.

Thanks! Good eye! I'm aware of the 53 block, although admittedly, I wasn't when I bought it. My plan is to do everything possible to keep it from overheating, which as far as I understand, is what causes the cracking. I'm considering installing an auxiliary radiator to that end. Worst case scenario, if it cracks, I can try a stitch repair or just replace the engine 🤷‍♂️
@Jessersadler
@Jessersadler 2 жыл бұрын
@@WaldosWorld pretty hard to stich repair without a drill press/mag press. Also has nothing to do with overheating. The water jacket wall was cast too thin. Enough torque on the motor and the water jacket cracks. But considering your motor is well over 100k miles, you should be fine. I say should be; mine cracked at 240k. Couldn't figure out for the life of me why I was losing a gallon of coolant a month. The crack was behind the damn trans cooler. Took 6 months to find it. Went lock and stitch route, broke 3 spot facers, got tired of it and sold it to a buddy. He threw JB weld on it and put it back together, drove it for 25k more miles and sold it

The heat of the arc is different for tig and mig, let alone stick. The heat of the arc for stick is 10,800 degrees Ferin height. Changing the amperage does not change the heat of the arc. It only controls the deposition rate of the electrode. It does affect the force of the arc (burning it it). That is why turning it up to high can cause it to blow the base metal away. It does not change the temp of the arc.

The best tip I can give anyone is always test the thermostat! I have had numerous problems with dud thermostats . Many name brand thermostats come out of the same factory in China or Vietnam or Chile etc and get stuffed into name brand boxes and then sold by dealers as genuine parts. And then there are the counterfeit onesies. Just boil some water and drop it in if it doesn’t move (even a little if it’s an above 100^ C ) it’s a dud.

Awesome vid! Consider fitting a Bosch P7100 "p-pump" instead of the VP44 it has now, left a company plow truck stranded right in front of me one day!
@BadHaddy
@BadHaddy 4 жыл бұрын
The VP44 is really not a bad pump if you don't try to turn it up. If you intend to turn up the wick, then yes, the p-pump is a good option. But for the cost of a p-pump, different timing cover, different timing gear, seals, new oil line and new fuel lines (around 2300 for factory rebuilt pump outright, 400 for lines, 2000 for other parts) you can keep 4 vp44s (1000ea) and their lift pumps in the glovebox. This swap also requires pulling the camshaft, this rocker arms, valve bridges, and pushrods have to come out. It's actually a LOT of work, and at that point, you're literally just headbolts away from pulling the whole head off.. and might as well get it rebuilt since you're elbows deep. But, since you're running the factory vp44 pump, make sure you use a premium lift pump. I'd say go get a dodge OEM lift pump or an airdog. The aftermarket replacement ones are very bad. if the lift pump dies, it annihilates the vp44. Also do the KDP mod. (Edit: Oops, he did the KDP already!)
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have a FASS fuel system that I'll be installing, so hopefully that'll keep this pump from dying, but yeah, if it does die, I'll strongly consider installing a P-pump
@mooman86
@mooman86 2 жыл бұрын
The biggest thing with the VP44 is to keep it lubricated. When they removed the sulfur from diesel it really put a hurt on them. You can add 2 stroke oil to the fuel to help combat this. Many threads on the inter webs on this. Has to be ashless. I ran it in my 24v for many years- 1oz to a gallon. It made it run more quiet and less smoke. Kept a gallon of it in my toolbox along with a funnel that was clear with measuring marks and a twist valve on the bottom so I could fill it up and stick it in the filler neck and let it drain out. Continued to run it in my 6.0 I had after the dodge and still run it in my Kubota tractor.

When I swapped out to my 12v and ditched the 6.5 I used a hydraulic pump to run my PS, plow and dump bed. It works great. I used a Fuller 9spd because the price was right and I love it for towing. I did use a divorced style transfer case to keep the 4wd but I'm happy with the outcome. I ended up using my 6.5 after rebuilding it and modifying it (hx35 turbo plus other upgrades) in my Jeep J20 truck (fsj) which worked out great as I do not demand allot from the J20 except to drive and use up in the hills and seasonal roads. I still run the 4spd but may look into a 5 spd. The 6.5 is more then enough for the jeep and the fuel milage is great. I was going to use a Mercedes diesel but why not use what I already have I always say. Plus its a 93 6.5 so it's still mechanical and not electrical.

I use a variety, but many of them are Tekton. They're cheap made in China, but they're some of the higher quality/good value stuff that comes out of China. I've had good luck with their stuff so far

I know this is well in the past but can I ask your reasoning that you decided not to change the rear main seal in the previous episode? I only ask as you had to change the bell housing

I probably should've changed it, but I think I was just a bit overwhelmed with stuff at the time 😂

The power sterring and oil line looked pretty crusty at the engine. My rule is crusty parts never get reassembled. Make sure you clean parts.

Did you know that the department of transportation will not let you weld on a vehicle frame because you anneal the metal and weaken the frame. If you want to add a tool box, they allow you to drill holes and bolt a box on.

Hi Waldo, why did you choose a Cummins engine instead of a Ford or GM engine? Thanks in advance for your answer.

Just curious if 💰 was the deciding factor to go 24v valve over 12v? I'm looking at this swap in the future and watching closely. These aftermarket companies are really pricey for swap kits(AC/alternator/eng. mounts), so keeping templets may b helpful for your subscribers, such as myself? Awesome work!
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 3 жыл бұрын
No, I was open to going with a 12v or 24v, I just happened to find a 24v first. Yeah, these swaps can get expensive, especially buying conversion parts, which makes being able to fabricate and weld super useful!

I'm sure you can get it to fit, thought it may require a body lift. Eaton transmissions tend to have SAE standard bellhousings, so it should fit your engine as long as you have the right flywheel housing or adaptor
