I attempt to fit a 5.9 24 valve Cummins paired with an Eaton Fuller transmission into a 1995 GMC C3500HD, finding more problems than expected along the way.

That plastic line, was part of a remote greasing setup that's common on Heavy duty trucks. All the lines run up to one point with a block of grease fittings. It's just 1/8 plastic line available just about anywhere that sells Commercial Truck parts. They work good, up until the plastic line breaks and nobody notices.

IF , he assembled the trany\clutch,etc. WITHOUT a remote grease hose , his throw out bearing will eventually lockUP and then he has TO remove the complete trany,etal . to replace IT !!!

@@joedoakes8307 you don't need the hose, a grease zerk on the throwout bearing works just as well. It's just not as convenient. My Pete is setup like that, and tbh I hate reaching up in there.

@@familytraditiontransportat7951 OK , but if you observe the position of 'His' grease cert on the output shaft it's pointing UP , not down , which is incorrect I think ! Concerning your miracle save action on the engine just in the nick of time, you are one LUCKY guy! Definitely a case of split second save. On another note, if you can acquire a set of backhoe, forklift forks instead of Dyno's bucket for all your lifting jobs, you will be MUCH happier. Lastly, you modification to the clutch release arm/lever was very admirable. Before welding the rod to the lever, I might have drilled through the (outside) face of the lever where the rod met it, to allow an additional plug weld.

As others have already mentioned the plastic line on the transmission probably ran to a grease pump for automatic grease system of some sort . Not exactly necessary on a pickup. All the lines for these systems are not the same size, each brand uses slightly different thicknesses specific to them so you just can’t go anywhere and get these. I work in parts and we have been a dealer for one of them for over ten years. My advise is to just go to auto parts store and throw one of those rubber grease lines that are already made if you would like to have easy access. If you’re not worried about it than just put a grease zerk in there and be done with it. Great video , making me think twice about engine swapping my k3500

I'm not sure about Freightliner but on my KW the friend that helped me rebuild her works at the Freightliner yard in town and he ran a lot of tubes like that, that went to grease zerts that you couldn't get to and he ran them into a block that he put right under the driver side door on my truck. Now it's not a problem at all greasing them. You know you might want to go to Larson farm and see how they clean everything that comes into their shop. They have a built in pressure dwashing bay.

I make guide pins all the time for aligning things like flywheels or trans. Take a long bolt with same thread pitch. You will want it long enough to stick out of the part you are aligning. Cut the head off and grind a groove at the outer end of the bolt now for a flat head screwdriver to remove once aligned.

I'm still on the fence about the whole EF trans in this truck. I'm working on a 12 valve with NV4500 in my 98 K3500 and it was a tight fit. That SAE bellhousing/adapter is huge. The NV4500 and Dodge bellhousing and adapter fit the truck with about 1/2" of clearance all the way around. That's with the body seam/lip folded flat, too. I'm sure you'll get it in there one way or another but holy cow, there are much easier ways to fit a Cummins/5spd into a GMT400. I'll be interested to see how much effort it takes to get it fit in there. Hopefully it doesnt require much cutting of the body.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I didn't realize the trans would be this tight of a fit. I think I'll be able to get it in once I get the crossmember out of the way (so I can lower the engine/trans) and I fold over the seam of the firewall/trans tunnel. Keep in mind that the HDs actually have the body mounted higher than the normal 3500s (which is why they have that 4 inch lower grille to fill the gap), so that'll help. 👍

Also if you go back into that transmission rotate the throw out bearing sleeve so you can access the grease fitting on the throw out bearing through inspection plate on bottom. Hi Waldo..you are very enterprising....I’m doing a very similar swap into a 1990 3500 duelly....just as a point of interest it’s much easier if you remove the entire front clip or as most people do by removing the cab. I’ll be watching as you modify the crossmember...your chassis appears quite different as your truck Haas a straight axel I am wondering as why you don’t clean your parts...the grease inside the bell housing ?.....but I’m patiently watching....your solution on the engine mounts will be of interest as I purchased a set that does bolt to the crossmember and block....iv seen the adaption of the dodge mounts...I have a donor truck the cummins came out of and if you need some of the factory pieces let me know.....and does the trans you chose have fifth as overdrive?....the preferred axel ratio using the NV 4590 trans with fifth as overdrive is 3:73

Thanks, Charles! I never really thought about removing the cab, but it actually wouldn't be that hard at this point. The Eaton trans actually does not have an overdrive. I have a 6.5 myself. Is that the stock transmission that you mounted to it or not? I’m no expert on the transmission side of things.
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 3 жыл бұрын
No, I bought the Eaton separately. The transmission that came with the 6.5 is a GM 4L80E and the trans that came with the Cummins was a New Venture NV4500

Why the switch from NV4500 to Eaton ? Nice work either way!
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 4 жыл бұрын
It's an Eaton, not an Allison, but the reason is because the NV4500 I have needs a rebuild (which I was planning on doing) and I stumbled upon this Eaton that includes a parking brake and a speed sensor, both of which the Dodge NV4500 don't have but the GMC needs 👍

I'm no mechanic but that grease fitting thing at 27:13 might be someone's attempt at setting up an automated greasing system. I've seen similar stuff on heavy equipment where you can push a button in the cab and you can grease the joints without having to stop and service the machine. It's popular with excavator's once you get around the 470 and up size. It kinda has a look like someone tried to make their own....but what do I know

Quick Question, Can I use a 93 Eaton Fuller 6206a on 93 5.9 cummins for a f600 I have
@WaldosWorld
@WaldosWorld 3 жыл бұрын
You'd have to make sure they both use the same bellhousing. If the Cummins came in the F600 originally, there's a decent chance that it uses the same SAE bellhousing as the Eaton. For reference, mine is an SAE #2 bellhousing. You can find the dimensions here: www.sbmar.com/articles/understanding-bellhousing-and-flywheel-measurements/
@theoutdoorsquality3500
@theoutdoorsquality3500 3 жыл бұрын
@@WaldosWorld The thing is that the 5.9 cummins is from a 1993 dodge cummins so the bellhousing is different and I was told that Ill have to get a new bellhouse I believe its sae 3, the only thing I has worried about if the Eaton Fuller FS6206a would work with that cummins engine
