what a blast, so true, so real.... you put it best, "clearly showed their centuries-long link with the sea." nothing to add. thanks for sharing.

Thanks! The jib was attached to the mast. All rigging was very simple and sturdy, with no close fits. The luff tension was not particularly tight, but it is a small jib, used primarily as a slot-device to aid the airflow over the main, and also for C of P balance. To stay upright in the trade winds they used the passengers as ballast, plus the young man in the trapeze. As you can see, he was standing in the canoe to get things rigged. That's a bit challenging by yourself in a modern canoe.

What a fantastic video! I am currently looking to outfit my canoe with a sprit rig. that looks like a great way to do it! What is the jib attached to? the boom? or the mast?

Beautiful! How can we call to that sail configuration?

The mainsail is a spritsail - a four sided sail with a diagonal spar that goes across the body of the sail rather than along one edge of it. The small sail at the front is a jib. A boat with one mast, which is fore and aft rigged with a mainsail and a jib is called "sloop" rigged or a "sloop". So, although it is fairly unusual, I would call this a spritsail sloop.
