Jethro Tull's "Cup Of Wonder" off of their "Songs From The Wood" album.
I've had this one sitting around for a while and thought I'd post it toward Austria's own Jackinart (a rabid Tull fan by all appearances) who recently posted a great cover of the song, "Songs From The Wood".
One of the first "serious" bands I was in, Scepter (yeah I know - lame name), actually played this song. We played covers by Tull, Kansas, YES, RUSH, Styx, Genesis...oh yeah and to round out the set, some Bruce Springsteen, REO Speedwagon, AC/DC, Doors, Allman Brothers???
And I would wonder why the audience always looked perplexed.
My friend Harry can corroborate this story.
Anyway, another fine bass line played with a pick by John Glasscock whose clean, tight, midrangy sound I've always admired.

Every November/December I break out Songs from the Wood. It has songs for every season, but this album just reminds me of Fall and Winter. What a treat when this version popped up in my KZbin feed. I had no idea you'd covered this so long ago. What a great tribute to the late great John Glascock!

I agree! It might have something to do with the old commercial for the album... weren't they sitting around a campfire or something? I've done a couple of songs off of this album if you're interested.

Very good precision and articulation. John Glascock was able to come up with some complex lines that worked so well and naturally fit the arrangements. You have a good ear for extracting such parts!

Yes, I play solely by ear. I think Glasscock's parts are pretty clear, distinct and mid-rangy which, for me, makes them fairly easy to pick out. For me, the difficult part are his note choices and time changes. I just learned of "Carmen" a few weeks ago and haven't explored their stuff yet, but hope to.

@harrycrowemusic1 Well, actually this was from the "Live From the Peasant's Pot" show which will be released in a Blueray/DVD box set later this year. It will feature commentary by band agent and manager Tyrone (aka Tito) Simone and will also have an interactive 3D Wii plug-in which will allow the viewer to help carry all the equipment up and down the two flights of back stairs at Peruna's and fight off the crack heads in the back lot. Yes yes yes.

Troy! you are one lean, mean, bass playing machine! This is a bit off the wall... but , are you a fan of John Entwistle, of "The Who"? Any way, the delicate sound of thunder rumbles through your finger tips as you make that instrument come to life!

Troy...Doctor of Intricasy, Mr. Smoothe..........that kicked ass! Nice song selection. One of the many things I like about Tull is when Ian kicks in with his flute lines, just so powerful and moving. And of course the bass....similar to Dave Hopes "puzzle" like playing. (?), Nice job man.

@logan2112five It's hard to believe that I played this out in bars on a regular basis in the early 80's. I admire John Entwistle for his contribution to the world of bass but not in the same way I admire my other influences. He had incredible speed, power and chops but the bass lines (and bassists who play them) that I'm drawn to are more articulate and precise if you know what I mean. You certainly have a way with words Ron. And if you don't write - you should. Thank you as always.

Something odd going on at 0:19 - you're fretting a C at the 5th fret, but I'm hearing the 9th fret E?
@TJH3113

No, I'm playing the C on the 5th fret of the G string followed by the octave beneath (3rd fret on the A string).

@@TJH3113 Thanks; to my ears Glascock is playing E (9th fret), C (10th fret), C (8th fret) at this point and the equivalent F#,D,D when the line moves up to D. I also have the first notes of the wonderful fill at 10 secs-ish and each time it repeats, as a double stop F/Bb at the 15th fret, and to me, the leading notes up to the D in the second half of the verse are G,C#, rather than your G,C. Please know that these are all well meant, friendly suggestions - your video has been a useful reference to me when learning this song. Thank you.
