Here's how I see it: Lead: The guy in the spotlight, singing the part most people would want to sing along to Bass: Singing the lowest notes to create a bassline Tenor: The high note in the harmony, hitting notes above your lead singer Baritone: Well, you need a 4th person to have 4-part harmony, and it'd be nice if that person didn't need a voice that was very high or super deep
@JoelERea3 жыл бұрын
If you have experience in regular choirs or musicals or opera, think of it this way: • If you sing 1ˢᵗ Tenor in those, try Barbershop *Lead.* It’s usually the melody and the highest _chest-voice_ part. The sheet music will take a little getting used to because your notes would be written where Alto would normally be: stems-down (usually bottom) notes of the top Treble (with 8vb) G-clef staff. • If you sing 2ⁿᵈ Tenor, try Barbershop *“Baritone.”* This is more properly called by its original name “Fill-In” because that’s what it does (it’s _considerably_ higher-pitched than classical baritone and if you make the mistake of thinking they’re equivalent you may strain your voice - almost ½ the time the “Bari” sings _above_ the Lead in most Barbershop arrangements). On the sheet music your notes will be where the Tenor would be in SATB music: stems-up (usually top) notes on the Bass F-clef. • If you sing classical Baritone and you have a decent head voice or falsetto that can reach into the Alto or even 2ⁿᵈ Soprano range, try Barbershop *“Tenor.”* This is a descant part that’s rarely the melody and, when not melody, is almost always above it. On the sheet music it’s where Soprano would be in SATB: stems-up (usually top) notes on the “Treble” 8vb G-clef. For classical Baritones lacking a good falsetto or head voice register, try Bass instead. • And Bass is Bass. Often the root of the chord so the others tune to you.

@@LimeGreenTeknii Another way of putting it is, Lead, Usually sings melody. Bass, Low notes, Tenor, high notes, sometimes melody, Baritone.... Whatever's left (I should Know I'm a barbershop Baritone XD

My local Barbershop Harmony Society chorus (which I just rejoined this week!) has helped me to DRAMATICALLY improve my singing. They helped me sing better than I thought was possible. And not just the barbershop style stuff, but church music and other genres too. Any people, of any age, and any background, who are interested in learning to sing, should at least consider checking out their local BHS chorus, if one is available.
