To add to that, after a few of these you start seeing the same patterns, it becomes predictable. The producers always get the same characters: the "arrogant person who ranks low" the "person who is the completely opposite of what they LOOK like", the "humble person who is actually a pro", etc etc.

It's a a known psychological phenomenon that people who have a lot of skill/knowledge in something will say they know very little (in part because they're aware that there's much more info out there to gain). And when people aren't very skilled at / knowledgeable about something, they tend to think they're much better at it than they are. The thing is, that belief that we're awesome at something even if we're just beginning and we suck at it, that encourages us to keep at it! By the time we realize we were shit at the thing, we've improved so much! This guy's just still in that phase of music-playing, and that's ok! No need to bash a guy who's just confident in himself!

music is insanely subjective. I think music is the most subjective media you can consume. Take for instance sonic youth. Thurston moore by most objective standpoints is a terrible guitarist. He can't like shred an insane solo but what he can do is write songs that use really unique tunings to work around and create something new around his short comings. Theres loads of musicians who are insanely talented song writers but maybe they can't do something very technical on their instrument.

It may look stupid or even impossible to rate them when they all play different instruments but any musician who's ever played in a band or at least played with the class will eventually get to know how good someone is regardless of instrument. Very generic example but the reason they say the drums are the heart of a band is because usually everyone else plays according to the drummer's tempo and feel.

Think about it, it's not so much how much objective musical talent you have but how good you look and present in the group, people who are less agreeable are usually rated lower just cause they are seen as less favorable then the more agreeable ones. Okay, but honestly; don't they audition the artists beforehand or something like that? I mean, if I were the blue-haired guy I'd be damn humiliated after the performance. It's cool that he put himself out there, but his piano playing was just a basic four chord, not even with a pattern. His vocals weren't majorly high or low, so the only thing that would save his performance would be the songwriting. On the other hand, all other musicians showed incredible musicality, like extremely talented. The only other person that included singing/songwriting would be the girl with the guitar, but her vocals were amazing. So if there was indeed an audition process beforehand, the casting directors set him up to fail imo.

Why this happens is that if someone is overly confident, they won’t work as hard. They’ll go around thinking they’re the best and not put in that much effort. Someone who is self aware of their flaws can work on them vs someone who isn’t and just thinks they’re great

@hypernel1798

Its because the person who is self-aware of themselves are most likely to have more capabilities to improve further. When you know what are your flaws its easier for you to look within yourself and do self retrospective to see what things you can change for the better. As for someone who's arrogant/overconfondent they don't work as hard because they think they already perfect (which no one is perfect) so they do not put much effort on what they do even if its something they supposedly have an passion for. Its harder for them to be humble and honest towards themselves

I completely agree, ofc this can be applied to both at the end of the day because people are complex, and people who are very confident can become over achievers who work themselves to the bone to keep advancing, while someone who is deeply insecure can give up because they are too aware of their flaws and get discouraged by other people's talent thinking they'll never be good enough.
