CURIE’s unusual and unique life began as a Miss Nanny robot, which I have talked about in a previous video, but unlike the others who were designed to care for infants or supervise young adults, was instead given a position inside the secret research area of Vault 81, as the Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer, or CVRIE for short, essentially a high tech lab assistant.

The thing about synths in the lore is that even if the institute created them, they really don’t know how they properly function. It mentions in terminals that they’re able to dream, and despite not needing to eat, are all obsessed over fancy lads snack cakes. Plus the fact they feel like slaves to the institute and actively try to escape whenever possible and have emotions (like curies romance) and they don’t know why. I like to think they age bc all the organs they have are suppose to be physically indistinguishable to regular humans, and organs tend to age and get weaker with time

While it makes sense for some to be not allowed there, because they are a danger to the institut, other could have some really interessting interactions there. Curie, Nick and even MacCready all could offer some strongly needed insight into the Institut.

Obviously I romanced Curie, Piper and Cait in my first playthrough and had an evil playthrough with just Cait and another with just Piper. But my most played on save that I consider my "canon" playthrough is with Curie. I like the idea that my character was pretty emotionally broken after watching his wife die. But after meeting Curie and seeing her pre-war naivety and desire to help and talk to people, that it reminded him of his wife. And having never got the chance to be the protector he should have been for his wife in this fallout, he can do so instead with Curie

Synths would still have to eat and drink, gen 3s might have bodies made artificially, but they do canonically say that the ONLY difference is the synth component. I'm sure somebody would notice that they didn't eat or drink.

Yup, inside the institute you can watch a Gen 3 Synth getting built. They're very nearly 100% human. They have a skeleton, musculature, and skin. They're the same type of organic machines that we are. As you say, the only difference is the synth component which I believe is some type of interface with the brain that allows for the transfer of information.

I have heard convincing claims that the Institutes mission was to eventually put themselves into perfect immortal synthetic bodies, which fits with their "Mankind redefined" slogan. Perhaps they would age but they would simply replace their synthetic shells with fresh new models as they aged. Seems that plot was largely forgotten at some stage.

Even though in reality its just chopped to truthfully lazy writing, I think the scientists in the institute have no idea how their own creations work. There’s terminal entries where they found out synths can dream and are obsessed with fancy lad snack cakes. And the scientists in the wasteland and brotherhood claim that they’re physically indifferent to humans, which means they need to defecate, eat, drink, sleep, etc. I think the only other difference between humans and synths aside from their synth component is that synths are all infertile/sterile. I don’t think there’s been a case of a pregnant synth yet

Man, I remember back when I had her with me as a companion. I had her all dolled up by transforming her from a a run-of-the-mill miss nanny, into a walking murder-machine by making her a heavily armoured assaultron fitted with the nuke shoulder mortars, mini gun on one arm with a nice hammer/saw combo on the other. In the end, I was left with quite the dilemma when it came to when she wanted to be a synth woman.

If you have a robot workbench, don't talk to CURIE after her transformation, just go back to your robot workbench and you can turn her back into a robot, though she still thinks she's a synth. Also, keep explosives away from human CURIE. She killed me whipping out a fat man in a fight inside a small building.

Also Synth aren't human, even the sentient ones. They ARE however living beings, just not human. Even Glory - a self-aware synth herself - states that synth aren't human, no matter how much the railroad think they are. Synth are an independent, self-aware, intelligent species - not human, but self-aware, intelligent, sentient and sapient.

I think Curie is an great character for an Institute run. Having to grapple with how the Institute treats their Synths as property, while you treat Curie as a normal person, could make for some interesting rp.

She is fascinating in the sense that its the usual story of:"where is the line between synthetic emotions and natural ones?" Because her emotions are pretty human, they are not merely syntheyic (like for example alexa, which has a basic data bank of questions and replies that must be given to said questions), she makes her own decisions, her emotions are more fluid and, much lke ours, instinctive, because keep in mind, we are not different from a robot except from what makes our body, we too have a massive dtaabank that tells us how to reply to certain questions, only we can elaborate further than the strict replies given by a program

There's something about Curie that I can't help but talk about. I want to sit her down at a park right before the sun thinks about setting and have her talk about anything she wants. Any of her views on life. Anything because She's so wistful and full of hope, almost ignorantly so in terms of her own safety. I'm just gonna put it out there, it's annoying that you cannot give Codsworth, Nick and Ada a synth body but you can for Curie. It doesn't make sense. I mean there should at least be a dialogue option for it and if we really really want to, we have to actually find an empty synth body or get the institute to make one and of course get Codsworth, Nick and Ada to agree to it. depending on your allegiances. but it's annoying that there's no such options.

@Anarky Lastname For Codsworth, I can guess so too. but i would love to have the option and perhaps even an unmarked quest to try and convince to move on from their metallic self to a more flesh like body. I would love to dress Codsworth up in a butler's uniform and see him shoot with a laser gatling gun. As for Nick, sure he could've done so, but same time, at least an option to do so and try to convince him. but Nick I am not so concerned, since he's been in that body for so long and he's essentially already bi-pedal.

This story is adorable and makes me want to watch the old Robin Williams movie “Bicentennial Man” which although surely inspired by Isaac Asimov (if not actually written by him?) is almost the same tale with the only glaring difference being that her story includes the small matter of an armageddon. While they've put their heads in the sand regarding synths developing sapience for socio-cultural reasons, dismissing Curie as a research asset would be a step beyond that. University Point and Mass Fusion both show that the Institute will send literal armies after valuable pre-war technology. Curie is such an example in her current state, putting her in a third-generation synth would not only greatly improve her capabilities but put her directly under Institute control. Such a move would be purely beneficial for the Institute with nothing really risked.

Curie is a Miss Nanny (possibly) turned Synth and a possible companion of the Sole Survivor of Vault 111. She wields a built-in laser gun and buzzsaw and later a laser rifle.

lol you have her in the same labcoat I have her in except on my save it has absolutely OP ballistic weave from a mod. 100 ballistic and 100 energy resistance. And a plasma rifle I made to mimic the Q-35 Matter Modulator from New Vegas.

@@napatora It's from a mod that adds multiple different weave types. Railroad ballistic weave is buffed, but you can get this weave with just perks. I've not met the RR yet, just finished the memory den quest.

Curie is NOT human, but she IS sentient, she is ALIVE, certainly our equal, but as a synth she is a species of her own... related to humans genetically through the Survivor and their son Shawn but she is a genetically engineered life form. A new offshoot of the human species as it where, just as we had our cousins of different species in prehistoric times in the Denisovan and the Neanderthal. We share their DNA just as she shares ours.

Would curie technically be a descendent of the sole survivor? Gen 3 synths were created with Shawn's DNA and the sole survivor is one of his parents.

I think it’s a stretch, but oddly, Curie radiates Audrey Hepburn vibes. The pixie haircut, French accent, and wholesome nature is something Audrey always exhibits in her films. In Roman Holiday, Audrey’s breakout film in ‘53, is a princess who wants to explore the free world. Which is also Curie’s struggle as she wants to venture outside her Vault, and was limited to her duties as a robot, just as Audrey was limited to her life as a princess. If New Vegas used Marilyn’s likeness, Curie was absolutely intended as an homage to Audrey Hepburn.

@@ZumbieGuy ah, but she’s authentic just like the original! They could never find Audrey’s bad side, much like Curie as well. I built her a fully furnished house in Sanctuary, decked with mutfruit orchards, picket fences and nuka quantum decor. Curie to me like Audrey, is practically the only character in the story who is unaltered and without ulterior motive, even faced with programming and transformation she still questions the world with the same curiosity and that’s compelling to me.

Curie's evolution in FO4 somewhat mirrors Audrey Hepburn's character in My Fair Lady, as well. Pickering wants Eliza to become the "perfect gentlewoman" (which she does but on her own terms) and Curie in FO4 wants to become a different being. It's the Pygmalion story either way you slice it, so that's another nice touch.

What puzzled me most about Curie is Codsworth can understand Takahashi but she can't. They're both roughly the same model of Mr. Handy/Miss Nanny but there is some other difference or Codsworth was making up that he could communicate with Takahashi.
