Omgosh my dad had one of those old sleds when we were kids...he fixed it up and we went snowmobiling lost a tooth and loved every minute of it!!! Woah great memory! Thank you!

Seeing this brings be back to 2 yards I was in. First one had a few Ford Model A's, 80% 50's 60's GM cars, everything (in his mind) was worth more than gold. Second place was a Military yard, 4 DUKWs at least 20 6x6 some 80's but most were 50's. Half tracks those super rare Military SUV like Jeeps with wood floors, M37s, M-715, MB's.. in the oldest part he had 50's cars. They hold on to this stuff where it can't be saved anymore...

Alex - thank you for taking us along on this trip. It was so much fun to watch. It brought back some great memories - my dad was a big time collector. Mostly 40s and 50s DeSotos and a bunch of Chrysler Imperials. A couple of New Yorkers, too, but my favorite was a 37 Olds convertible with a rumble seat that he found rusting away in a farm field in northern NY. My mom thought he'd lost his mind, but he got that baby running and drove it several times back and forth between Florida and NY and up into Canada. He would've been in his glory in a place like this. I remember him taking me to a yard in Florida to see an Aston Martin. The mud was about a foot deep but we picked our way through it! I'd rather go wander around a place like this than a shopping mall anyday! People are saying nasty things about this guy, but he obviously loves every single thing there and knows what year and what kind of engine each one has. You were very respectful, as always. Thank you for that!

This old boy in the yard knows his products. Need I write all of his desirable collectibles ? They say (in the comments) there's no muscle cars, sheesh, I already named 4 of them. Hey, what about the Road Runner too ? Not to mention the sport car. The soda machines are worth money, the outboard motors, the boats, the cycles, the sno-mobiles are all worth $$$$$. The lead sled with the chop-top, the 36 Chrysler, the Caddy's the custom van. Man, practically everything he owns is valuable. Added to this is if he was into show cars he's already made his money. Now he simply wants to unload his inventory and semi-retire. After all his partner passed. (R.I.P.) Lastly, you have a new sub. :-)

@@CuriosityIncorporatedI'm actually interested in a couple. I spent years fighting laws and regulations to save cars from being taken and crushed. I went against the state and the Epa and won.. no personal gain, just made it so they couldn't fine people, sneak on their properties, haul off their cars etc etc... It took years but I won... now a couple decades later and this year, they snuck All of the laws and regulations back in... very sad... In anycase I was in an accident roughly ten years ago and couldn't work on cars anymore. In the last couple years they've come up with new surgeries and stem cell treatments.. So now I can actually do more and more by the day so its time to build a car with my son... It will take longer but atleast it will finally happen.. I've been binge watching this channel for days since I ran across it, its the perfect balance of everything.... and then the junk yard episodes popped up, maybe its a sign !

Yes, there were a couple that could show some promise but if it costs $20,000 to make it worth $20,000 (or less in some cases) then you have wasted your time and gained nothing unless it is an extremely rare car and depending on what it took (workmanship) to make it presentable still may be a structural nightmare. I have seen many "collectors" in the past who have been hoarding cars for 30-40 years who won't sell anything and in the end think that the rustier it is, the more it is worth. Or more commonly they finally pass away and the heirs or the local government clears the property and hauls all of it to the scrap. You try to buy something from them and if they will sell, want 3 times what you can find it somewhere else in far better condition.

I've been listening to this garbage for years. "Oh it's so rare" and "oh yeah, collectors love these things". That's his way of saying "I want a forture for anything here or 5 times what any sane person would be willing to pay". In truth, they're piles of rust and badly collapsed sheet metal in the shape of what was an old car and if by some miracle you find something half way worth while and not wrecked or rusted to the ground, that guy will want just shy of what it would be worth fully restored. I've run into dozens of guys like this. Collectors run from these cars because once they get back from the media blaster, theres nothing left and by the time you've restored it, you've spent 3 to 5 time more than you even have a prayer of selling it for. Come on guys, I know everyone watches the Barret Jackson auctions. Do you really think the 74 Chevy Caprice Classic Wagon your Mom drove back in the 80's is worth $20,000 bucks? Why do you think people are getting out of old cars? I use to buy crap like this in the 80's for $500 to $1500 bucks all day long. All of the sudden a '69 Toyota Corona is worth $10,000? Come on guys, think about this.................

Still fun to walk through these old yards though :)
@allenschmitz96446 жыл бұрын
Dear Doc, I so agree with you, the mkt. for these old cars has tanked and every Mercum auction I see 90% never hits reserve...it's like harleys, most of there buyers are as old as the company and the company is dead now.

Right. And I just watched two small boxes of knucklehead engine parts go for $7900 at an auction.

I hate admitting it, (sigh), but yeah, you're right. I hate seeing these old pieces of iron rot, but if you ask any yard owner what they want for it... they get the Cheshire Cat look of some who just got themselves a mouse! They know what they have, but have a bad knack of overplaying how much they can get for them. A lot of these guys will be dead before letting some of these classics go.
@rexcars18355 жыл бұрын
Doc Hollywood Man you said a mouthful. Characters like this are their own species. As they sit, those cars are worth their weight in scrap. Probably a few are good to fix and drive but not to go crazy with. Like you, I was bringing home stuff like this for peanuts years ago. Most of them died in the demos.
