I graduated from high school in 1972 in Ohio USA . Every girl in our high-school received a miniature Lane cedar chest from our local furniture store. Prompting parents to buy a full sized one referred to as a Hope Chest. Girls filled the full sized ones with wool blankets and sweaters to keep moths out and also started collecting things for their future. Like quilts and linens. My parents were married in 1944. Their chest was identical to that chest. When I had to clean the house out there were my Father's military dress uniform and hat. Many old photos. It was full of memories. Because of the cedar and the quality of Lane chest it was a time capsule. My neice still has the chest.

Traditionally, cedar chest or trousseau chests, were where unmarried women collected special items for their households as part of their dowry when they married. You will often find the flatware ( silverware ), random pieces of fine, hand worked linen pillowcases, tea towels and bed sheets, fancy worked lace and whatnots. . After marriage, most of these young ladies would store their childhood and other memorabilia, their university grad things, wedding shoes and veils, or family christening gowns. My mom got a cedar chest from a friend in high school. When she was visiting her she sat on the chest and my mom's friend asked if she liked it, and when my mom said she did she gave it to her. Her dad made her all kinds of furnishings and she didn't appreciate it. But my mom did. My mom kept it for her entire life. I have it. It stored many keepsakes. I left all of her things in it

The kits to kit sweaters with matching skirts (the piece of wool you found with the yarn) were wildly popular in the late 50's, early 60's. Keep that together!! Intact kits with patterm are really hard to find!

I've bought a few vintage Andrew Stewart kits. The wool is a "skirt length" of wool tweed handwoven in the border counties. One of my kits even had a photo taken of the weaver in his croft, sitting at his loom. They usually come with grosgrain ribbon and coordinating buttons, as well.

My mother told me (she is 83) that when she was a senior 12th grade A furniture store would send all the graduating girls a small jewelry box that was the exact copy of a large or normal size cedar chest as a Graduation present and to hopefully sell the cedar chest for their hope chests. The jewelry box my mother has is felt lined and smells wonderful like cedar still today . It looks so much like the one you have. She has bequeathed the box to me. I’m so happy to have it. I will pass it on to my daughter. The chest you have is a Hope Chest I believe.

I have a collection of s/p sets like that. Washer/dryer, hat rack/hats, TV, Piano, Bowling Pin/ball, ice cream cones, frying pans, mixer with s/p beaters, etc. From the 50s and lots of fun to show people. Never heard of them being used in dollhouses, but I suppose many of them would work.

10:12- I had a white rabbit pelt when I was about 12 in the 90s and I did make a purse out of it. It was super soft. I didn't use it because I kind of felt guilty for having it, poor bunny. But I used to love to feel it. I was a foster child and moved quite a few times and it disappeared a long with some other things I used to have. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The Native American doll was very popular in 1955+ and I believe you have “Mary had a little Lamb” doll, the washer/dryer was probably meant for a dollhouse. The silver spoon might have been a baby gift

If those are vintage wool yarns in good condition a. The chances are it's still very usable; and b. It's probably worth a bit. Also, I would suggest that the red fabric, in the box with the red yarn, was for a matching skirt. Since its Shetland wool, and there is plaid fabric too, is it possible the family had Scots links (or just a holiday).

Alex I think Cedar chests were used to store woollens (hence the wee sheep) and moths don’t like cedar, so you didn’t end up with holes in your woolies!!

Hi, I have about 20+ trunks and multiple steam trunks and barrels that were in my Uncles storage from June 1971 till 2018 when we moved it to a unit close to my house. I haven't been through everything yet. They all have multiple locks on them but I also have a bag of his keys. It's like a game trying to figure out what key goes where. Thanks for sharing!!
