I think the single most important thing (after treating this sweet couple well, without judgment or condescension) that Alex and Melissa chose to do was to decorate and move things around a bit and make everything look nice and clean and cozy. Putting down the rug, moving the shelves into the living room and making a nook for the table and chairs with a picture, staging things to feel comfy and look pretty made all the difference, I’m sure, to how they felt when they came through the door. Imagine the impact of walking into just the bare spaces as they were without that step. I think there would have been more a feeling of loss and mourning for the things that filled that space. Instead, they walked into a space that offered a whole new life! It gave her the ability to say she can look to the future. Bless this sweet couple. And bless Alex and Melissa, Hans and Zenovia, and Josh.

What has touched me the most is that you have given them the attention and help that most elderly would get from their children. What a wonderful and lovely couple! If you are reading this, thank you so much for letting Alex film you coming home and your reactions, it was so moving to see and I’m so very happy for you both. Also, when my father passed away we found a situation similar to yours. I’m starting to think it unfortunately isn’t at all uncommon, life and stuff gets overwhelming for SO many folks and you two are so brave to have let someone know and asked for help. I wish my dad hadn’t felt the shame he must have felt and asked for it too... Hopefully this will inspire someone else to do the same. Thank you again for being willing to share this experience with us via Alex and Melissa. Hoping you’ll have a great summer in your house and garden and many well wishes from me, over here in Sweden, to you. ☀️🏡 🌷🌷🌷

Eira, my grandmother immigrated to the US from Skara, Sweden around 1915. She had 6 or 7 siblings, so I must have oodles of second cousins in Sweden They were Anderssons and Andersdaughters. Years ago, my mom got a list of her aunts and uncles from, I believe, the church in Skara. I and my daughters' suspect they were Geats. Just not sure about that.

My mom who is 94, is not a hoarder but each time we try to help her just go through stuff she gets worried saying. Sometimes you can get rid of too much stuff! I think it has to do with the era she grew up in and how hard they worked for even the smallest life improvements. I'm so glad you left it a livable home for them and I hope they don't regret their decision to get rid of so much so fast. You are an awesome guy Alex, you show your kindness in every single thing you do and say.

yes you are correct about this... I'm 74 and had to get rid of the depression-era-saving-stuff mentality I grew up with... what a relief to realize it and be free ... the sentimentality aspect is something else though; I have learned sentimental things are a replacement for experiencing real life in the present (hard lesson but so freeing ) ... it's all about mind-set and gratitude for every present moment

Vicki imagine that you are walking with a cane and someone comes into your house and wants to remove things or extras. I have done that and now when family offers to come into my home to "help" me I refuse. It is my stuff, when no one comes by for weeks on end I still have my stuff. I know that to move to a smaller place I will need to downsize but I am not ready yet. This may be your mom, she may be 94 but her head says she's younger and she is not ready for that next downsize step. And to family quit with the gifts, take us out, give us flowers or specialty foods to eat, a donation to the Sally Ann in our name but we do not need more stuff coming into the house. There are only so many slippers or sweaters we can wear.
