As a kid I lived next to a old dump that was active for more than 100 years I can remember digging around in the late 60s and early 70s and finding cool bottles and plates and when my mom moved out in the early 2000s I clean out the house and garage and found all my hidden milk crates full of my forgotten Treasures .

My Dad was an Engineer on the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later became the Burlington Northern Railroad. He retired after 36 years. I've found a few pieces of their stuff but not much. Hard to find. I still have some of my Dad's "time cards", and things he used. He retired back in the 1970's. Nice find on all the railroad stuff.

That foot warmer is called a stane pig or a stone pig here in Scotland, they were filled with hot water and used to heat the bed. I've got 7 of them in various sizes I use them as door stops.

Hi I remember those too, Mum used to rub them across the sheets before us kids got into bed so the sheet was warm. We called them hot water bottles. Lancashire England was very damp pre central heating, but it was perfect for weaving cotton in all the old mills.

In the mid '90s I dug up an old dump behind my home( built in 1893). I found some old embossed Scott's Emulsion bottles (cod liver oil mixed with lime and soda-yuk!)--a large ink dispensing bottle with a pouring spout, cobalt blue milk of magnesia and bromo-seltzer bottles, dozens of Moses Attwood jaundice bitters bottles which were high in alcohol content. There were also literally hundreds of flavored extract bottles most of which were 90% alcohol. That was the way polite ladies hid their drinking habits back then. Bake a cake, take a nip or two or ten then when it's done, daintily retiree to their room for the Victorian ladies afternoon nap or possibly have a ''fainting spell'' attributed to the heat in the kitchen.

Hi, it's not just a foot warmer; it's actually a hot water bottle. Those old ones take the weight of the bedding off your feet and are toasty all night. Shame the top is missing as the rubber seals are probably still available.

I'm old enough to have needed a typewriter in college. If anyone is wondering why the Underwood had no number 1 on the keyboard, most manual typewriters lacked them. You were expected to use a lowercase L for a 1. Given the typeface, the glyphs would have been practically identical. PS. There's a Canadian connection to the Evangeline hot pepper sauce bottle, even though it's from Louisiana. It's a reference to the poem "Evangeline" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, about an Acadian woman's search for her lost lover after they became separated during the expulsion of the Acadians. As you probably know, many Acadians settled in Louisiana, then a French territory, and their descendants are today known as Cajuns. Notwithstanding that heroine of the poem ultimately settled in Philadelphia, she's a celebrated figure in Louisiana.

I've read that before water purification of modern times that people drank spirits because of the unhealthy water source i.e. river and streams. Thanks for sharing
@the-chillian
@the-chillian 4 жыл бұрын
You cannot drink spirits for hydration. What you may be thinking of is beer, and to a lesser extent wine. Beer was safer because boiling the water is a step in brewing it; this kills harmful microorganisms. Even kids drank it, but the daily drink was "small beer" that often had less than 1% abv. Stronger beer was for adults, and wasn't the regular drink. Wine is of course made from juice and not water, but it does have some anti-microbial effect, so even if diluted it can make water safer (but not 100% safe) to drink. One can be assured the wine itself is safe even though there's no boiling involved because if it were not, the wine would have spoiled in the making. (Modern winemakers add sulfites prior to fermentation to prevent this.) If wine is any good at all, it's safe. The anti-microbial properties are less from the alcohol, which isn't strong enough to disinfect, but from some of the phenols and other anti-microbial substances it contains. That's why red wine is better for this than white. Distilled beverages -- i.e. spirits -- are safe from microbes both because there are multiple steps where the ingredients are raised to boiling, and also because of the high alcohol content in the final product. But it's not something that will sustain you when you need water.

My grandma made some pretty unique beer with low alcohol level, because the water in the farm well would be nasty in the summer. Recipe passed down from generations, had a thick and sweet taste to it with dense foam. We drank this as late as the 90s, when I was quite underage, without getting any kind of buzz. It makes sense that this was a common drink through history, and I feel lucky that I actually got to experience that first hand.

I loved seeing that old Underwood typewriter, it reminded me of my mom's. Something else I noticed about it, there's no "1" key. When I was learning to type in high school, our typewriters also lacked the "1". You have to use the lower case "L". And it thrilled me to see the lone little Pepsi salt shaker. I have a pair of Pepsi salt & pepper, new in the box. My mom bought them for me in the mid to late 60's.

The glass firetruck was a candy container. I've only dug broken ones. All types of vehicles, telephones, animals &c. I've found broken "Army Bombers" too. The oil can is a mini of a "4 gallon Standard Oil" can. Chinese wholesale food still comes in them. They were s standard container everywhere into the mid century. As a kid I had one packed with survival food from the 1961 missile scare. Canadians are that much closer to the USSR. Here in Hawaii they are made into iconic dust bins with a handle for sweeping up.
