Does the brushing require that much skill? It seems like it's just brushing, with no nuance.

There are different techniques to sweeping depending on what you are sweeping for (and don't forget you need to keep your balance). The elite players will sweep very hard. Lots of pressure on the broom and quick sweeping. It is quire a workout.
