Same! I have 2c/3a baby-fine hair that is also pretty thin (my entire ponytail is about the diameter of a Sharpie) and is ALSO oily, so curly products are generally way too heavy, greasy, etc. I haven't found anything that works for making my curls look, and STAY, halfway decent-looking throughout the day. My hair is soft, stringy, light-colored, and looks terrible no matter what I do, aside from straightening it. I'm 45 freakin' years old, I should be past this by now!

In case anyone was wondering about Verbs formula change: I haven’t noticed a huge difference in performance but it does have a different feel when u pump, like she said in last live. It has some more oil I guess so it does feel that way (in the hand it’s more slippery, less watery). I’m able to use less than before and yeah the fragrance is a little different. But overall still working like a charm 👍🏻💇🏻♀️I was worried it would be too moisturizing.

INFORMATION/VIDEO REQUESTS! 😊 1)At the risk of pushing Amanda and her husband to start a family before they're ready, I would love it if you did a video on reasonably priced curly products for kids (both curly and coils kids) that can help a) keep their hair looking nice b) prevent "the tangles of death" that far too often result in tears, screaming matches, or trips to the salon to get the knots cut out while at the same time c) not being too heavy. I've met very few toddlers and preschoolers who can wear a bonnet at night -- often we're lucky if we can guess which lump is the head and which is the feet when we go to wake them up! We do at least start with a silk satin pillow case, though. 2I have eczema, and I am struggling terribly with what is acting most like seborrheic dermatitis (plaques, red and irritated areas, etc). Malassezia doesn't seem to be a significant part of the issue, because ketokonazole shampoo doesn't help at all. Salicylic acid shampoo isn't helping (SheaMoisture's Sal acid based "apple cider vinegar" shampoo), nor does Bondi Boost's product. The only thing that helps is T-Gel (good old fashioned coal tar), which makes sense given that it has an anti-inflammatory properties. However, it doesn't like hair a whole lot. I'm going to try diluting it some with water and but it in a hair dye bottle so I can apply it directly to my scalp without getting as much on my hair (after all... I'm looking to treat my scalp, not my hair), but I'm not super convinced that's going to work! I'm a pediatrician, but when I ask my dermatology colleagues, they don't have very helpful advice outside of "use more ketokonazole."

Try sulfer 8. They have shampoos as well as other products that could provide relief but be gentler on your hair.
@BooksMusicMe173 ай бұрын
Have you tried a urea/lactic acid-based shampoo like Eucerin DermoCapillaire? If you're inflamed and maybe dry and itchy it'll be gentler and it's not stripping on hair either.
@sarahfloyd54773 ай бұрын
As a fellow eczema curly, I highly recommend starting to use only fragrance free, dye free products! As for protecting your hair vs treating your scalp, you can protect the hair by coating it with oil/deep conditioner before washing your scalp with a treatment. I don't know your diet or the other products that you usually use, but for me I'm able to mostly control my eczema by cutting out the things that I am allergic to and that my skin is sensitive too. For me that's gluten, fragrance, dyes, and chlorine. I also highly recommend the Cetaphil eczema lotion, I have definitely applied it to my scalp before. It stings horribly (if you have active eczema) but it dries quickly and it works quickly. Also make sure to keep your gel off your scalp!

Thank you for your video! I imagine that the curly hair products, with their "film formers to reinforce the shape of the curl" are more essential if your hair is wavy and you're looking for that additional hold to keep that wave/curl. For example, my 3a curl kid needs no gel, only a light air dry cream -- mainly to keep those broccoli curls defined but they're there regardless. The same styling on my own bob-length, 2b/2c hair will look mainly puffy/frizzy (think Einstein on a rowdy hair day) + some frizzy curls around the face. I use some serious amounts of mostly hard-hold gel on washday and a good curl cream/activator is a treasure. Mousse is always on top of, never instead of gel and a good diffuser was a game changer for me.

Okay love your side by side and how to apply products. I am 61 and only have been working with my curly for the last 4 years, up until that point I was self conscious of my curly wavy hair blowing drying and it would be frizzy. Great video! I agree with your conclusions -- a hair routine catered to your specific needs work best! I have curly hair but also have low density around my crown area, and I find the best volumizing hair products are for all hair types. Usually I use a volumizing foam and then after a curl friendly gel, I use a volumizing brow dry spray before diffusing. We all have different needs and its nice to have a video confirming that.

Hey there! I’ve been following your channel for about a year now. I’m 24, cis male, and buzz cut season was real in my household until I was about 16 and decided to stop letting my dad cut my hair. I never knew I had curly hair until I grew it a few inches long and all my female friends kept telling me I had curly hair. It took a few more years before I stopped styling it like straight hair, let it grow past my shoulders, and started embracing the curls (nothing against curls, I just didn’t know how to take care of them). I’ve gone thru a few different phases over the past few years. Since finding your channel, I’ve been using a curl cream (Marc Anthony Strictly curls) a year and a half now and jojoba oil. Using raking, praying hands, and scrunching techniques on towel dry hair. I’m not very skilled at styling hair and as a husband, father, and breadwinner, I haven’t had a lot of time or confidence to grow that skill. I still had lots of frizz and flyaways which really bother me (I hate the sensation on hair anywhere on my face). I’ve tried lots of different shampoo and conditioner combos over the years but not necessarily anything labeled for curly hair. After checking your website for recommendations, I switched two weeks ago to the Curlsmith Frizz Control shampoo and duo conditioner (using the duo as both a rinse-out and a leave-in simultaneously). I immediately noticed improvements in the frizz department but I still have flyaways and stringy pieces. I absolutely love my curls and feel so confident rocking them (my wife loves them too). Any recommendations to further help with flyaways and stringy pieces while keeping my routine manageable? Oh and my hair is somewhere between 3A-3B, fine, and low porosity (doesn’t sink in water, air-dries fast).
@lukenatewilson98924 күн бұрын
Also, I have a silicone scrubber for scalp stimulation during shampoo. And I have the tangle teaser brush for detangling while conditioning and I also use that brush sometimes for spreading the leave-in conditioner and curl cream. I’ve never used a gel or foam. I do have a non-aerosol hair spray that I’ve used on occasion for styling.

This is a very interested topic and I am hoping for a series. I have tried several curly hair products, for example, Curlsmith, Bouncegirl, Naughty, Aveda. Since they are difficult to me to buy, this summer I decided to try a regular type of shampoo and conditioner easily available. Their shampoo is cleansing well and the conditioner is like smooth butter smoothing out my tangled hair with only half the amount than what the conditioners for curly hair. Also a leave in condiitoner from Redken also amazing needing only a fraction of the amount compared to the curly hair leave in conditioners I have used. The brand is Redken, which is not cheap but neither are the most of the curly hair products either.

Mel, as usual you have provided a wealth of information! Although I am a permed curly, I have fine, low density and high porosity hair. I used to have trouble finding the right products to use and often felt like an imposter buying the curl products. I have had some hits and misses but because of your scientify information, I am better prepared now. The 3 product routine always feels like too much on my fine hair, but I now know that I may not be using what my hair needs, or I may be using too much! I need one of those brushes though…everything I currently have doesn’t give me good enough clumps and I always end up frizzy so I often opt to not use anything and just scrunch! Ok…enough blabbering! Do you think you could do a video addressing the needs of permed curls? If there’s a difference or not, should we treat our hair as if it’s curly, and what the heck do we do when we are close to needing our next perm and the root and 4 inches (or more!) of growth is pin straight which then makes it hard to get root volume…I would be ever so grateful!!!

Hello Mel. Long time viewer, first time caller. I adore your videos- you're so fun and insightful and really helped me develop my routine. But....I have to confess: I'm a fake curly girl!!! My natural hair is fine, limp, kinda wavy around my face, stick straight in back. So once I could afford it, I started getting a perm. I am a curly girl in my heart. But I've always wondered what I should do. Do I pay more attention to the fine part of my hair? Do I pay more attention to the curly part? I'm sure that the fact that my curls are chemically created instead of natural is also a big deal. I'm sure there aren't many of us, but I would love if you did a quick video for those of us faux- curlies out here. Sending you a warm coffee from Seattle- Reb

I found this fascinating! I have curly specific and more general products (including some Aveda you showed). I'm a scientific type with a curious mind. I appreciated what you said about being able to use ethnic products on Caucasian hair, just lesser amounts. I have 2 questions: 1) Towards the end of the video, you mentioned elongating your curls. How did you elongate your curls? 2) My hair was always wavy, but my hair texture changed to curly as I entered my 50s and started chemotherapy drugs. I know hormones can change hair, but my hormones are being strictly regulated by medications. Also, there are so many anecdotes about post-chemo hair growing back different in color and/or texture. I take lower-dose chemo so I did not have much hair loss. However, I went from say 1b-1c to 2c-3b.

I know this is purely anecdotal but as someone who uses flexi rods pretty much every wash day, ( my hair is wavy/straight) to get tighter curls, I've found that the only way for the set to last a full week is to use a heavy leave in like shea moisture and a gel, as well as a very moisturising deep conditioner. These products are definitely very heavy for my hair, but if I use some spray conditioner for striaght hair and a foam, it just doesn't hold and my hair is dry. So while I'm manipulating my hair texture obviously, I find it interesting that these curly hair products work extremely well to preserve my hairstyle.

So I just found your channel and I have some questions no one has been able to answer for me. Hoping you have some insight. 1) I have fine thick hair, and a weird scalp. It gets icky (not super oily, but skin and product buildup) very quickly, and when stuff builds up I get basically pimples around the hair roots badly. Every shampoo that's ever worked to help that has been marketed as "degunking" or "root cleansing". And the best ones are discontinued. Got2B Squeaky Clean may be old enough you haven't even heard of it, but it was the best shampoo I ever had. Clairol's Hair Food Strawberry and Ginger is the other best. Otherwise I have sensitive skin and scent sensitivities. So it's really hard finding a shampoo that handles my scalp but doesn't either break all the curly hair rules or super dry out my hair. My dad had the same problem and the only stuff he could use was this prescription red stuff. Do you have any recommendations that might help? 2) I likewise have problems with ALL hygeine products (why must everything be scented like it's covering up a boys' gym locker worth of smell? Isn't the point of cleaning products that it gets rid of smells?) but also everytime I've experimented with other hair products, the feel is gross and like I just need to wash my hair again like I haven't showered in 2 weeks. But all the CGM shows a LOT of product use. Am I trying the wrong things or are the amounts in videos wrong? 3) By your video I have pretty low porosity. It's really hard to get my hair wet enough to wash (multiple stylists have commented on this), including out in the rain it doesn't -quite- roll off but I can make it from the store to my car with surface dampness while other people are soaked, though once it -is- wet my hair holds a lot of water and takes a crazy long time to dry. So I do blow dry it, not as much now as when I had long hair, but even 30 minutes in a towel I still have to use some heat or my hair is dripping. So are there particular products to look or look out for? 4) I know you'll probably cringe at this, but I've had short hair for several years. Past chin in front but super short in back (I think it's called stacked?). And layered. Are the layers sabotaging the curls?
@talaaa28973 ай бұрын
LOVE your science videos. I think for me, if i was styling my hair curly, while i know that all that matters is your hair density and hair tyle and not your curl type in choosing products, i feel like lightweight creams work better than leave ins, i dont use both,just a really lightweight cream, i use the floetry hair serum, and a gel!
@talaaa28973 ай бұрын
And also on the gel you’d never use that when youre styling straight for a blow out right? So curly hair products are not as different as marketing make it sounds, its still a bit different

Great video!! I've never seen you do a video with innersense line. Can you do one of those for review please?

Hey Mel, for a true scientific experiment, it would be best if you only change one variable at a time. Loved the video, but would love to see a comparison of each product!

Both sides look great. But I wonder how each side will look on day 2 or 3.

Awesome video and have often wondered this myself. I will on occasion use non curly shampoos/conditioners but always curly stylers for me. This girl needs the hold and definition curly stylers give me. 😊 Miss seeing Scientific Mel and the white lab coat 😞❤

Awesome video! Could you do the same experiment but with straight hair at a medium level (not high porosity)?

THANK YOU for this video !! But you know, I'd really like to know, with this side by side comparison, how it would have looked and held up if you did a blowout - maybe the curly hair line is more versatile than we think ? I could try it myself, I know, but it just wouldnt be as funny or interesting as watching you do it. Truly love your videos ❤❤❤
