1:08:05 vent hose? Is there supposed to be a hose connected to that what is its purpose.

There is supposed to be a hose that comes from there to the filler tube. So if any fluid burps out the vent it goes back into the transmission.

Hi Thank you for your explanation. I have toyota allion 2006 (U340E automatic gear box). Some times It doesn’t work reverse gear. But it works when accelerate the engine.There is no issue at forward driving. Please help me find the problem of part. Kind regards

Are there any codes stored in the computer? Anything else you notice when it does not engage reverse.

Hello sir great video have watched it numerous times and has been a tremendous help. However I am having problems locating seals common to the rear cover, these are the scarf cut split seals being installed at around the 13 minute mark. what is a good part number as well as a place I could purchase? I would need all three common to the cover. My toyota dealer will not sell me just seals must pay for the entire cover :(

Don't think you will find them separately, you will need to buy a whole ring kit. May have to buy a whole rebuild kit. Try WIT or Transtar, links are in the description.

Good Morning Sir, wonderful video, the best....I´m in South Florida, having a problem with a U341, it has a knocking sound just during the initial phase of the acceleration...between idle and 2000 RPM...(like a stall), all the gear changes are very smooth driving, no lights in the dashboard (It feels normal), I removed the Oil pan looking for metal contamination, but nothing (all looking great inside), we changed the oil and a new filter, and the sound reduces considerable, but it is still happening.....also we checked all the engines mounts, loose metals, everything...just to confirm, but the sound comes from inside...this car has 195.000 miles...and the translaxe was with its original Oil. What could be happening? any pressure switch selenoid?

Not sure what it could be. I have never had that issue. Did some looking and didn't come across any info for that problem.

Hey Tom, I was curious to know if it's possible to replace all the solenoids without having to remove the valve body completely. Would you just have to loosen the valve body to drop it down a tiny bit to allow for clearance?

No. You cannot get to the SLU solenoid without taking it off.

Right above one of the shift solenoids there is a clip holding a piece of metal that holds a spring and a ball into place. Does that metal clip go in the middle of the metal piece to hold the spring in? The piece of metal im talking about looks like an hour glass almost, I pulled the pin and the spring and piece of metal shot out and I’m not sure how it went back in.

Hi I have a Celica that I'm rebuilding. I took out the first drum after splitting the case just to check it out. It looked to me like at least one of the steels was offset from the rest, does this mean someone's been in here before, what could happen if I don't re align everything?

It's possible. Could be it just was done when it was originally built. Probably not much of anything. It is supposed to help the fluid escape more easily.

No, the piston has to be put in first.

Hi, I have a question regarding the U340 transmission. I would like to know the differences between the U340E and the U341E transmissions. I’ve heard that they are very similar, but I’m interested in the specifics of the differences between the two. Does the U340E use a different torque converter than the U341E? Thank you

They fit different engines. I would have to pull the book out and look, but I'm sure the TC's are different stall speeds and I would bet the diff and transfer gears have different tooth counts. VB may have different check ball locations.

​@@CurmudgeonTransmission That’s good to know. I have seen many sites selling torque converters that they claim to fit both the U341E and the U340E, which confused me. Would a torque converter designed for the U341E not work for the U340E, especially due to differences in horsepower, torque, etc. Thank you.

@@Henry-p6w3r According to the Transtar catalog there are 7 different ones with 5 different stalls. Minimum would be you have poor performance. More than likely you will have ratio codes or lock up codes. Toyota's are terrible to get the right converter. Only way to be sure you have the correct one is to match everything. Bolt threads, bolt pattern, pilot, fin angle. You can tell the fin angle by the dimples on the outside of the shell. There is usually a code stamped on it. Usually on the side with the hub and close to the center. DO NOT let the core go until you are positive you have the correct one. Once it is gone you are screwed. Personally I would deal with Precision of New Hampton, but even they may give you the wrong one. Like I said Toyota's are tuff to get right. Link for them is in the description.

2006 Scion with the U340E. FWD takes a while to engage after the car sits for a while. Any ideas?

Sounds like a drain back issue. The valve may not be seating properly. You can get an inline one from WIT or Transtar and install it on the cooler line. Just pull both lines off and start the engine to see which line is to the cooler. Install the valve with the arrow in the direction of flow. Does not matter which line you put it in as long as it is going with the flow. See if that does not cure it.

Hello Sir, first of all, great video!!! I have a 2009 matrix with a U341 at 180k and is currently slipping on reverse gear. 2 weeks ago, when I put into reverse and start to apply little gas to back up, transmission would shudder as i am backing up. Now, 2 weeks later as i apply gas on reverse, I can feel transmission slipping bad, especially on a up hill. Transmission will still roll on reverse but slip when I apply little gas. I did drop the pan to inspect for any debris and there was some excessive fine material on both magnets. Would you know what specific part went bad for this particular symptom? I am a mechanic myself but never did a transmission like this one before so I am seeking for a second opinion first and gather some parts before I do a tear down. It feels like the reverse set of clutch rings are bad and need to be replace. Of course I won't know for sure until I take it apart. This is for my daughters car for college and your help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Like you said, you will never know until you get in there. Reverse is the B3 Brake and the C3 clutch. The rear cover is bad about the ring lands wearing away. I would plan on a master kit with steels and pistons, filter and an end cover. Clutch clearances are controlled by the pressure plate on that set. You may end up needing it also.

That is the B3(1st/Rev), the C3 (Directs will be in the drum just before the end cover. Those are the ones you will probably find the problem with. 3:19 I am assembling it.

No, I don't sell parts. Sorry, finding time to sit down and look up part numbers for everyone that wants them is next to impossible. Transtar and WIT both have an online catalog or you can call the nearest location to you. Both have numerous locations in the country. Links for them are in the description of every video.

Are there any codes stored? Did you reset the adaptives? You will also need to check line pressure and see if it is high.

Hello, thanks. So it has a good 2-3 shift and third is fine, but shifting from 3-4 it slips. Either there is a valve body problem, SL solenoid problem or a problem with the B1 clutch.

Hi Sir can you help me. The reverse light on my gear selector on dashboard does not lit but the others do lit drive neutral etc. what could be the problem. Reverse does work but no reverse light and no reverse sound

@@CurmudgeonTransmission no back up alarm. Toyota fielder 2003. Reverse lights work sometimes the reverse sound works but sometimes it doesnt. But the reverse light on my dashboard doesnt lit up but drive , neutral etc doess

We don't have that model here so I can't look up schematics for it. Sounds like it might be a ground problem but I could not tell you where it would be located.

I replaced it with the clutch canvas and seal kit. but I didn't replace the bonded seal. I want to ask, what causes the backwards canvas to burn? maybe you can help me. Thank You

There are a multitude of reasons it could burn. Bonded pistons that are not sealing properly could be one of them.

after rebuilding process, i tried to turn my counter drive gear and differential by hand, it doesnt turning, is it normal? im just wondering if its normal before i put it back on my engine, i tried to put the torque converter on bell housing but it turns smoothly, exept the differential and counter drive gear are not turning. i have U340 tranny, thanks man

There is a speed sensor hole over the diff. Take it out, For the ones that did not have the sensor they still had a plug there. Turn the diff with a screwdriver. If it will turn like that you will be ok. If not, you will need to address the clearance problem. Unless the bearings or one of the gears was replaced your clearance should be right.

thanks a lot brother, i check the counter drive gear and i have a little gap between the gears, i noticed when i tighten the case the diff doesnt move because of that small gear clearance, thanks a lot for the advice, i learned a lot! 😎😎😎

hey there sir is there any way to rebuild this trans to hold more tq and hp to accept a stronger turbod engine? also the only reason i ask is i have this exact transmission on 13 corolla and the only problem i have is that when shifting to 3 from 2nd it shifts rpms drop a couple hundred depending on load then goes up like normal then shifts to 4th finally...only time this doesnt happen is when the load is high and almost wide open throttle it will still do this any other time with the wacky shift from 3rd to 4th seems like a computer problem but idk it runs fine besides that weird shifting like i said only 71k miles too is why im worried thanks so much if you can reply if not i understand too!

As far as I know no one is making heavier duty parts for these. It sounds like lock up is applying after 3rd and releases when it shifts to 4th, then will reapply after 4th. Without having a scanner attached and watching data to confirm, that would be my guess. Sounds like normal strategy. You could probably get it programmed out of it to make it where lock up only applies after 4th gear. Might see if HP tuners has anything for it.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission ok thanks yeah I haven't really seen anything as far as beefing up this trans just didn't know if the transmission professional would know. And so that would be torque converter lockup you'd be referring to? Is there any fix for that mechanically? I know some ppl who may be able to reflash the stock ECU if that's what your referring to by with hp tuners. Thanks again

@@CurmudgeonTransmission also I was reading a sonnax parts article about the u341e and f and what data you just gave me and it mentions to bore out the lock up control valve and add part# 37740-08K oversized tcc valve to get original clearance back and restore original lock up function would this be any help? Also it seems almost impossible to find the part for it maybe bc I'm not plugged in to the transmission world but I looked for a second and couldn't find it I found the tools required to remove it or what have you

In your situation you would be better off buying a valve body that has been done already or a new one. By the time you buy the reamers and the holding fixture you will have spent more than you can buy one. Try WIT or Transtar, links are in the description. Don't use any of the other brands they may have that they want to sell you. I would do Sonnax or new. They won't have new, you would have to go to the dealer. You might check with the dealer and see if there are any reflashes available for your vehicle.

Also last question can I replace my own valve body without removing the whole trans while under the car? Still no codes so it's just a little harder to pinpoint too. I am not understanding what you are asking. Is the locking tab on the connector for the TCM broken and you need a new one?
