🔋 How to Reactivate a Completely Dead Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery | Troubleshooting Guide 🔋
Are you having trouble with your lithium iron phosphate battery? A common call our support techs get is about activating sleeping LiFePO4 batteries that won't take a charge. In this video, we'll address this issue that some customers run into when they receive their batteries, install them, and mistakenly treat them like lead acid batteries. We'll guide you through the process of reactivating a completely dead battery and explain why it's not the battery's fault, but rather a charger-related problem.
The problem is some chargers and inverters, like the AIMS 75A charger, won't turn on until they see voltage on their input terminals. However, the battery won't wake up to provide power out until it receives a charge. It's a catch 22 when you have a deeply discharged battery! Learn how you can fix the issue in this video!

I was following advice to condition a new LiFePO4 battery by charging it to 100% and then discharging it completely. My heart stopped for a moment when my charger wouldn't do anything, and my multimeter showed it barely had voltage. I knew the BMS was doing its job and cutting off the cells at low voltage, but this video reminded me of an old reviving trick. I never would have thought of this trick as an easy way to fool a charger and get things going again.

Go figure. I have an entire garage full of tools I have acquired over the last ten years but the one thing I don't have is jumper cables, but what I do have which works just as good is a Power Probe. Hooked it up to a secondary battery. Applied current for about 2 minutes, just enough time to power up the BMS and now the charger is taking over for the lithium battery on my Camaro. I had a feeling mine got fully drained by an accidental parasitic draw I had going over an entire day, just wasnt sure how to go about re- activating the BMS. Excellent video and thank you for the info!

This method (with 12.8v battery as the "pusher") worked for me. My 7.2Ah Miady LifePO4 battery was drained to practically zero volts (0.08v). Thanks for the tip! If you are out in the field or have no other voltage source than a solar panel, you can - briefly - hook up the solar panel directly to the "dead" battery to jump start the BMS. I tried it too. It works. Nothing got fried.

Thats why i didnt buy that particular AIMS power supply for my 24v batteries and went with a couple of victrons instead. @@s1dew1nd3r4he means wake up the charger shown in the vid. To wake up a sleeping 12v lithium battery, you need to apply more than 9v to it. Most of them need to see more than 12v input. There's many possible sources for this. Wiring 2x9v batteries in series will give you 18v and that will wake up the lithium bms. I used an old laptop charger, which was 18v DC, but you'll need to know which wire is positive and which is negative. A PC power supply (12v DC) or wifi router power adapter (12v DC) would work too.

Victron IP67 would recharge the dead battery without external Exciter procedure, as the presenter narrated. FYI the battery in question uses smart JBD BMS. Thanks for reading. 73s…

I had this issue when I First switched to LFP from Lead - (Learning Curve Ohh Boy ! much to forget and relearn anew) A Fellow Geezer had the simplest of solutions and I have never sufferd the problem again. The Cutoff Values in the SCC & Inverter/Charger Profiles and matching them to the BMS', so that cutoff occurs BEFORE the BMS force Cutoff (only has to be a 1/2 Volt difference). This allows the BMS to stay awake (some models go into "Sleep or Storage Mode" and will respond to incoming charge when present. This also allows the SCC to keep "in touch" with the Battery Voltage Sensing. LFP is at 0% SOC and discharged at 2.500 Volts per cell. 10V, 20V & 40V respectively. Cutoff @ 2.750 (is in the bottom Curve and Below Working Voltage Range of 3.000-3.4000 where the AmpHours come from but still alive enough to not go 0% and cutoff. By Setting Inverter/SCC Cutoff to 11.0V, 22.0 or 44.0 will resolve the issue. Even with Grade A+ Matched Cells discharging below 2.900 Volts per cell is down into the Cliff Fall Curve with very little to gain from it. 2.500-2.950 (Bottom Curve) and 3.475-3.650 (Upper Curve) only represents about 5-7% of total "GROSS CAPACITY" which should be typically 10% more than the working NET AH Rating of the cells. - Nota Bene ! DO REMEMBER that there is (always is) some Voltage Drop between Battery Terminals to Inverter / Charger terminals and Battery & SCC Terminals so that MUST be compensated for. All Lithium Based Batteries are Millivolt/milliamp sensitive unlike Brute Force Lead Acid Batteries. Pending on BMS, there may also be a setting to allow over discharge which is set usually in Seconds of Time, this is to allow for a heavy start surge momentarily when Battery is low, this shoudl NOT be longer than 10 seconds AT MOST otherwise there is a risk of pushing cells down to BMS Cutoff point. Remember the Working Voltage Range which is what provides the "Labelled AH" is 3.000-3.400 Volts per Cell. ALL WITHIN a 0.4 per Cell Volt Range ! 12 - 13.6 volts ( from 3.000-3.400 ) 24 - 27.2 48 - 54.4 For Current Connected & Other Vendors. It would be prudent to include instructions for the Charge Profile Settings for such batteries AND also to advise with regards to the Cutoff Voltage Points to use with SCC's Inverters & Chargers. And ALSO include something with regards to correcting for Voltage Drops and how to Calibrate that. Sadly, there are so many variations this can only be a generic datasheet to enclose with the batteries & devices. An Intro / Welcome document on how to commision the battery packs into service and teh steps required for a succeful instalation & happy clients. Never Ever Assume that the receiver of products has any idea of what they are doing ! Always look towards teh Lowest Common Denominator. RULE of 3 Applied ! If the same question, problem, issue arises more than 3 Times; - the Solution should be documented for reference. - if a "user issue" the documented solution or links to solutions should be included. - if an actual fault, then solve the actual fault before continuing sales etc. - AN OUNCE OF Prevention = a POUND OF Cure (and it's a boat load cheaper too)

Hi Steph, we REALLY appreciate your comment. YOU ARE SPOT ON! Regarding instructions for the charge profile settings for these batteries, we actually have your suggestion implemented. We list all these details on the product listing, so that they are a quick reference to anyone. On our new product, the 48v100ah server-rack battery, I'm looking at over a 100 page document because we are ensuring it has all the information to help a customer figure things out and be successful with the product. Far too few products these days have the proper documentation and it drives us NUTS! Regarding calculating for voltage drops, you should NEVER adjust your LVD based on voltage drop on the wires, because if you are running a smaller load the LVD will be totally inaccurate due to reduced drop. If voltage drop is causing LVD to kick in too soon, then sorry to say it but your wire is way too small.

I have to put a 12V trickle charger on the negative reading battery to bring its voltage up so that my onboard charger will take over like you described. My question is: why does one of the batteries draw down to a negative voltage in the first place. It's not always the same battery either. Although I understand the premise of this approach it seems dangerous. If the BMS cut off the battery isn’t is safe to assume the cells are at a low enough voltage that it would be unsafe to recharge them? For example, I had a LiFePo battery in a small UPS that carried a the correct rated load for the battery until it ran out if capacity. After power came back on that UPS was unable to recharge the battery. I checked with a multimeter and it claimed it was over 900v so i quickly disconnected the leads. A few seconds later i tried again and it read like 2v and drops rapidly. I left to battery in the shelf for a little over a month at this point.

can you connect a lead acid 12v to a Lipo 12v to get enough charge to recharge?

So if you had two batteries and one was shut off, could you connect them together and the one would turn the other on? Sort of like if you were balancing them?
@CurrentConnected
@CurrentConnected 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. The BMS of the dead battery would see the charge current and turn on, and if not, the charger would see voltage present on its terminals, turn on / start charging, which would then push the power through the BMS which would re-activate it.

Great info, thanks ! However, I awoke a dead Renogy by pairing it with another charged Renogy and that worked to awaken dead Renogy battery : HOWEVER, I told Renogy what I did and they said I did a NO NO and thus ruined the future warranty of the now awoke battery !
@CurrentConnected
@CurrentConnected Жыл бұрын
That's absurd. The batteries are permitted to be paralleled, so I have no idea why they would void the warranty for doing exactly what they allow.
@VideoByPatrick
@VideoByPatrick Жыл бұрын
@@CurrentConnected That's why I told Renogy why I did that awaken method but their tech support staff emailed me back and said I should read the battery manual which indicates that warranty was denied /ruined by miss matching battery state of charge by a large amount; which dead battery was of course way less SOC than the donar SOC charge was. I'll never buy another Renogy. Renogy claims pairing batteries with different SOC ruins warranty claims and their products.

Some of us haven't even seen that blue box you have there, what does it do for the battery and why was the white box utilized? If it seems straightforward it's probably because you do it all the time. Can you do an example with a lithium ion battery hooked up to a lead acid charger

If you need a video to show you how to put a battery charger onto a battery then put the battery down, walk away and don't ever touch it again for your own safety and the safety of everyone around you 😔

Do all LiFePO4 batteries ship like this? Check it, no volts and then put a tickle charger on it until I see volts and then should be good to go?

Okay, if im in my boat, i have my lithium battery for electronics, lead acid battery for cranking. If i use the "jumper cable" method from lead acid to lithuim, do i need to actually need to turn the key? Do i need to start the boat?

I've got a 280AH SOK. Worked great, then got on the road and it shut down. Turned out the balance PCB on the top delaminated and the B- terminal came off the board. I've repaired the board (currently waiting for Min to send me a new board). The cell voltages show 3.45, 3.47, 3.45, 3.47, but the bluetooth is not functioning and it wont take a charge. Without a charger connected, I see 11.61V at the terminals. This seems to be a very high impedance source, as it provides no current. Only open circuit voltage. I attach my WFCO charger to it and place 13.71V on the terminals, but it does not seem to be accepting charge, and the bluetooth still does not turn on. Any suggestions?
@chriskoran836
@chriskoran836 2 жыл бұрын
I heard you say that was a 75amp charger. Is that okay to use on the SOK 100ah battery? I realize this was just a learning video, but your website lists the recommended charge to be under 20a and the max to be 50a. It would be great to hear I could add a little more beef to my charger down the road once I improve my cabling further.
@CurrentConnected
@CurrentConnected 2 жыл бұрын
The charger can do 75a, but it has an adjustment knob so it can be turned down to 20a. You can set it to whatever setpoint you want.

how do you ever know if you actually started at your battery's maximum? Did your charger quit after it hit 78%? Some other %? Do have to go to dead, use a shunt and then measure how much goes in? Then compare that to the rating on the battery?

Why would the BMS not prevent the Bluetooth from discharging the battery that nothing? Am I going to run in to this every time I pull the camper out where it's dead if it sits for a few weeks?
