“English has bite-size candy curses while Spanish has 3-layer-cakes.” As many people know, English cursing & Spanish cursing have a lot of differences, but maybe they’re more alike than we think. In this episode Joanna deconstructs the meanings behind some of the most popular curse words around the world. Also, find out which country has the most insults out there.

@talogonza
@talogonza 8 жыл бұрын
@rominacarugati7454
@rominacarugati7454 8 жыл бұрын

It's not vagina it's ovaries. And is actually a very archaic macho thing to say. Unlike other places in South America Uruguay is quite reduced in it's population and in the past there were miles and miles of nothing but open praires and in order to be a woman back then you had to live like a man. Kind of like the famed Calamity Jane in the old west. We have a traditional dance here in the River Plate, both Uruguay and Argentina, where in the middle of the dance the males get to say some compliment to the ladies and they are responded with a clever insult. That's how it was back then in order to gain a partner you had to prove your worth. It was estimated that only 1 in 13 men could actually find a mate. Later on single ladies became rural teachers and they educated through the rural comunities, these were usualy single middle aged ladies in the 30's that were particularly tough and usually brutal in their punishment for disobedient children. Then in 1913 they got their right to divorce by sheere will and in 1917 women got their right to vote. So women are pretty liberated and self concious in Uruguay, they don't fuck around with weak/puny men. Even today where the female to male ratio is 52% to 48% one in three males is still single. Hence why when a woman becomes a mother and said mother punish their children for some missbehaviour you say she has ''the ovaries well put'', this is extended to housmaids, female teachers and basically any woman in a possition of authority.

*pulls up soapbox, clears throat* Can we please clarify that Mary Magdalen was NOT a prostitute? Joanna, I realize you're Jewish, it's not part of your faith culture, so I'm not angry at you, but please, let me, a Roman Catholic priest, clear this up for you so that you can educate the masses who flock to enjoy your profanity-infused wisdom (including myself, I find you very entertaining): Nowhere in the New Testament is Mary Magdalen proclaimed to be a prostitute, a whore, an easy woman, or even mildly deviant. The only thing said about her sins is that she had seven demons in her that Christ drove out. That's it. The rest of the time she was helping Jesus as he traveled around Israel preaching and teaching, covering expenses, and being the first person to see Christ resurrected after the crucifixion. And no, I'm not blaming your people for that. Just like today, the ancient world had messed up politicians who'd rather kill a guy than grow a spine. Christians fail at this misidentification ALL THE TIME because of cultural and sexual bias, lumping all the women who interacted with Jesus into one character they refer to as Mary Magdalen. It's wrong, it's a terrible injustice to a woman who was probably an awesome person, and it's terrible to just generically group the many important biblical women together like that. It'd be like saying that Ruth, Miriam and Esther were all basically the same person.

Tayloraurrekoetxea No. You're thinking of the woman caught in adultery. This woman was never said to be Mary Magdalen. In fact, there's no evidence that she was a prostitute, just that she was "caught in the act of adultery." This has a wide variety of potential meanings. Mary Magdalen was a specific named person in the Gospels, and a key figure in the early Church, as she witnessed Christ in his resurrected state first. It is unfortunate that history has clumped so many women of the Gospels together under Mary Magdalen.
