Upgrades to the taig! Here I install the new 5C headstock as well as give the lathe a little cleaning and adjustment.
Thanks to the fine folks over at taig tools...no affiliation/sponsorship I'm just a fan of their product:

the founder/owner personally lapped each machine by hand..i have a picture from about 78 of Forrest at the work bench where he did it ..(original location in the city of industry, California) . i probably did machining on most of the components on the original micro lathe 2 ... it may sound funny and antiquated now ,but the scroll for the 3 jaw chuck was done on a 2 spindle head punched tape controlled Bridgeport ...

Curt two questions 1. do you have power feed after the upgrade or is it possible? does the headstock come with the speed location sensor of the cnc version?
@CurtVanFilipowski
@CurtVanFilipowski 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the new models come with a power feed. The 5C headstock has a steel button embedded into the pulley for hall effect speed regulation (would need to use a DC controlled motor or servo for speed regulation).

This looks like a cool upgrade but how good is it in practice? What are the deepest cuts you can take on it? What is the largest diameter you can realistically turn on it ? It's still made of aluminum.. can it really take advantage of the full range of 5c tooling including chucks made for much larger lathes? I'm curious what your experiences are. For me the ability to turn parts 2-3" in diameter from Aluminum is important. Could this handel that?
@CurtVanFilipowski
@CurtVanFilipowski 5 жыл бұрын
It's amazing in practice for this size of machine. When roughing I typically take 0.1" cuts in aluminum, and about 0.03-0.05 in stainless. I have turned 2" aluminum round bar and that's what I would call the functional limit (material removal speed at 3"+ is a little slow but totally doable) I have done 3" turnings but this lathes sweet spot is about 1" and smaller in my experience (what typically fits in a 5C). If you are hogging material off your 2 or 3 inch stock I would suggest a larger machine, if it's only clean up cuts at that size I would say it's a fine fit.

Hi Curt, quick question, when looking at the 5C headstock from the side where the chucks get attached e.g. 9:14, what's the outer diameter of the silver round bit? The fixed one - the one that's screwed to the black case thing, not the inner one that rotates?

That's a substantial looking headstock! how much of a passthrough is it now with the 5C? I have a screw on er32 for the original head stock and it did a great job and making it more rigid, but I lost close to 5 inches of travel. Does that one eat up a great deal of space too?
@CurtVanFilipowski
@CurtVanFilipowski 6 жыл бұрын
It can take all sizes of 5C so you get just over 1" of passthru diameter. I find since the x carriage can actually run under the nose of the spindle its about equal to using the stock headstock with a 3/4 jaw in regard to bed space available. The amount of rigidity and clamping pressure you gain is off the chart, not a cheap upgrade but so far I'm super happy with it.

One question, I like your toolpost, I'm assuming it's height adjustable similar to an Aloris stye post. Did you fabricate it yourself, or is this available on the market? Ideally you would check out the spindle first with a DTI for runout then progress to the runout on a ground shaft. The tool you checked indicated a bit notchy, somehow. Then try the collet in several positions as well as leaning on the ground shaft to check for flex in brgs and spindle assy flex. I am considering buying a Taig and am very interested in the accuracy. So far everyone seems to be machining aluminum and plastic. You say the new belt did not slip. Do you think the motor and bed are strong enough to accurately turn max diameter steel and iron that will fit the chuck? I am interested in making steam engines as well as upgrading my shop equipment (Out of round rotating parts on HF stuff, LOL) . Thanks for the video :)
@CurtVanFilipowski
@CurtVanFilipowski 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, your method of running a DTI is MUCH better then my quick test. I have cut mild steel without issues on the taig (which is far easier then I would have expected)...doubt it would have any issues with turning down cast iron parts. Haven't tried Titanium yet (not sure if I want to try that without coolant) but will be running some stainless over it shortly. All depends on the speed at which you want to work, its not going to remove metal like a 2000lbs machine but its more then capable for its work envelope (which I would consider 1" and smaller). Biggest issues I have are the carriage travel when working between centers (I need to make a longer dead center for the tailstock someday) and the lack of change gears for threading...but I'll still take my taig over an import benchtop lathe any day of the week!
@tobyw9573
@tobyw9573 6 жыл бұрын
Curt Filipowski , I think I saw someone turn threads by putting a position counter and using that input to drive a servo or stepper on the carriage lead screw. That way you can turn any ratio that the servo can handle with no change gears at all. Not like I have any actual experience w/CNC or the like, I just read alot and look at the pictures, LOL.

Hi, I have to wonder what the advantage of a collet headstock would be. For a start the collet needs to have an EXACT diam to accurately grip a piece of material.....over or under a few hundreths (metric) and the collet is not gripping all along the diam. I would think a 3 jaw chuck with a slack register mount is 100% more practical for gripping any diam you can think of. The slack register method allows you to have a pseudo grip true chuck that suits any chuck without the high price of one. Also, the 3 jaw has a far greater capacity for round stock. I hate to think what you would do if you wanted to go to a 4 jaw or faceplate situation...…..probably replace the whole headstock?...……..is that for real? Lining up a headstock in 2 planes over 150mm is not a job you want to do every day especially when you are busy with work.
@CurtVanFilipowski
@CurtVanFilipowski 4 жыл бұрын
Have you used a collet headstock? Its night a day over 3 jaws! Collets also have a much larger grip range then you think, none of my stock is precision ground and all gets held VERY firmly and without marring like a 3/4 jaw system. You can also get collets in every flavor of the rainbow (oversized, undersized, metric, imperial and emergency). I have a spindle that mounts into a 1" 5C for when I want to spin the 4 jaw...but I avoid it like the plague as 5C is just so much more production friendly.
@gangleweed
@gangleweed 4 жыл бұрын
@@CurtVanFilipowski Short answer....yes, I have used a collet system…..I have a capstan lathe with a collet holding system...…..for my regular centre lathe I would not fit a collet system ever.....my 150mm diam 3 jaw is accurate to .02mm on concentricity on all diams and the chuck is 30 years old, never been reground ever.....I have the experience of 60 years on machinery to prove my claims......BTW, if you cannot imagine a 3 jaw chuck can be accurate to .02mm then you haven't machined for a living.
@TheTruth-fs2rm
@TheTruth-fs2rm 4 жыл бұрын
@@gangleweed The idea behind the 5C headstock has more capability than a 3 jaw chuck by far. The Taig 5c has a 17 mm 3/4 threaded Arbor option that allows for the use of a 3 jaw and 4 jaw chuck as well if one wants to use jaw chucks. Pretty much turns the lathe into a horizontal milling machine with a milling attachment. Run that on your 3 jaw chuck. Also we are talking about a micro lathe here.
@gangleweed
@gangleweed 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTruth-fs2rm I can't agree with you....I have the 5C system on my CUTTERMASTER tool and cutter grinder and I know the limitations of a collet system. A collet system only has capability to hold exact sizes accurately.....a 3 jaw chuck for general purpose work is more versatile.....BTDT. Anyone who designs a micro lathe with the 5C collet system is off his trolley.
