Curtis Comes Back to Seattle: Rediscovering Edward S. Curtis & Native American Culture

It’s about time Native Americans got the respect they deserved. Thanks for your post. In the 50’s at Disneyland they had a Native Village (they called it the Indian Village. I met Riley Sunrise there, a Hopi Native American from Arizona who worked there during the summers. Riley is in the Documentary on Edward Curtis’ Journey, called “Coming to Light”. He was a young boy when Edward came to his Hopi Village and he helped him with his equipment and they became pals. A fascinating documentary still streaming or for purchase.

It’s unfortunate that so many rare and beautiful images are locked up inside a private men’s club away from public access. The Rainier Club should make duplicate prints and donate the collection to a local museum.

I passed your comment on to a member of the Rainier Club, who asked me to reply that the Rainier Club is an all gender organization. Their Curtis collection was exhibited at The Seattle Art Museum for full public viewing during the Curtis sesquicentennial in 2018. The images are available for view at the Seattle Public Library in two different original sets of "The North American Indian."

I don’t think the Flurry Gallery still exists. Nor does the Burke Museum have all of its original Native American artifacts, having returned them to the tribes. The Burke is consequentially a disappointing experience today.
