Curtis, can you do an update on the Tentacle track e with the new monitoring option along with the quality of the monitoring option? Also you mentioned briefly about wireless microphone system like the DJI but can you also do a review on the new Hollyland Lark Max?
@Acebandet167 Жыл бұрын
Question? What do you think of using a DJI and reversing it to make it a poormans comtek? I rented a comtek and it was hissing and popping in and out. I originally thought frequency but couldn't get it to work. I made a quick solution using The dji and made the transmitter through headphone splitter block and reviver on the director and it was cleaner and didn't drop anywhere near as much as the expensive rented comtek. (I assume a new one wouldn't be having these issues and it wasn't rf) What issues am o not thinking of? What advantages do newer wireless monitor receivers have over this much cheaper solution? Cons? Pros? If no video then just a small responce would suffice. I don't use DJI unless I can't get a good wireless signal like in a bathroom where audio isn't local and worried I will have rf issues and now I will record on the person.
@curtisjudd Жыл бұрын
@@jeffrey3205 The new monitoring option is one device at a time. It has noticeable latency, but is good enough to check in periodically and make sure you don't have any major issues. another great review, Curtis. thanks. I really liked the original DR-10L and bought 2 of them. served me really well for years and still going strong. i've used them many times as the only audio solution with cameras that don't have xlr inputs, but also loads of times as a back-up audio record in critical client interviews. really priceless peace of mind knowing a completely self-contained audio capture is being undertaken that doesn't transmit - saved me a couple of times! personally i've never found having to sync without uniform timecode much trouble in post, but that's a function of the bulk of my work - interviews with long takes. when that uniform TC across cameras and audio is so, so useful is multicam set-ups that range over a long shooting period with lots of stop starts. then it's proved priceless (we've generally used Tentacles for those shoots).

Well done, as always, Curtis. I own both the Rode Wireless Go II and the DJI wireless mic systems and the reason I prefer these, as a solo operator, is that (as you mentioned), I can monitor the audio from my camera. It offers great piece of mind to know the sound is coming through. Also, since they both record internally (the DJI doesn't require software to access the files), any potential drop outs--something I haven't experienced on either--I could always cover that audio mishap with the recording directly from the recorder. One thing I DON'T like about both of these wireless systems--and the DR-10L offers--is a locking plug-in. That offers a peace of mind that I would really appreciate. I hope Rode and DJI consider this in their subsequent versions of these products. Again, great work as always, Curtis.

I own a collection of sound recorders (half thanks to Curtis showing me things I get excited about lol), including the Zoom F2-BT, the Rode Wireless Go II and the DJI Mic. I LOVE 32-bit float, but as an independent creator who has to wear multiple hats all the time, I gravitate towards the DJI and Rode solutions for 2 reasons... rechargeable battery and built in mics. I agree with Curtis -- replaceable batteries are more practical long term and for long shoots, but if you're a vlogger, running around, solely responsible for everything, the less I carry the better. If you're recording non-stop all day, the Wireless Go II and DJI Mic are not as practical. But if you're vlogging, shooting in bursts or just a few long interviews, it's easier to recharge a device than carry extra batteries. The DJI Mic also comes with a battery charging case. I also have issues with the Zoom F2-BT. The battery light is confusing & the record/stop function is goofy. I've had a situation where I thought it was recording and got absolutely nothing. I don't think there's a backup system to the Zoom F2 or the Tascam DR-10L Pro. The Rode and the DJI both have the ability to record independently into the mic device and without a lav if you so wish. But if I use a receiver, I can send a backup track to the camera or dedicated sound recorder. The interface on the Rode and DJI is a lot nicer and easier to read than what I'm seeing from the Tascam DR-10L Pro. I keep hoping for a 32-bit float version of the Rode Wireless Go II or the DJI Mic... or conversely a Zoom F2-BT that feels a lot more like the DJI Mic. A system can be rechargeable-battery-based. Rode essentially did this with the VideoMic Pro+ Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone. Seems like there's room for a device still that can marry the best of both worlds.

Another great review Curtis. As mentioned by a previous poster, Tentacle Sync has a battery replacement kit available. Regarding plug-in power: the Tentacle Sync uses 5volts. A previous poster asked about using battery powered electret mics with mini plug. Should work perfectly with any of the recorders mentioned. One use case not discussed is to feed the recorder from the unbalanced output of another device ( G3 transmitter, some Sound Devices mixers with mini jack mic level, or padded -10 line. In this case a DC blocking resistor would be required in the connecting cable. Balanced XLR outputs “should” be ok without the capacitor. Bias voltage can cause audio issues, or even cause damage to the source device output.

Kudos for warning a very large audience about the possibility of a lav mic clipping (especially in the opera singer, etc. examples, but even an actor saying a very loud line when mic'ed closely and ideally), which is a critical nuance to the assumptions about any 32-bit float workflow. As you've noted in the preview livestream, it's extremely frustrating to find a lav mic with wide dynamic range. The included lav is specifically the Tascam TM-10L.

I tend to go for the Rode system more often because it transmits to the camera, and I can monitor it, as well as recording on the Tx units which actually saved me a couple times before. HOWEVER, sometimes I have the opportunity to record stand-up comics, and I love to put the DR-10L on them when they go on stage because it does a great job capturing the comics voice, minimizing the crowd noise and the key factor is that I know it's not going to interfere with the house wireless system. Thank you Curtis for yet another very informative video! My experience with the Tascam DR-10L is that I really want to love it, if it wasn't for the ridiculously small and fidgety sliding control button and small display. I just always feel a little bit insecure about if the recorder is doing what I want or not. Especially in a low light environment it's pretty much guesswork what's going on. My ideal mini recorder would be the Tascam DR-10L Pro with a big red record button like the Zoom F2-BT. / ALL WELL FROM SWEDEN!

I agree that the display is small and a bit hard to read, but if you buy the optional BT1 and use the free app, it's a game changer...Every single setting on the DR-10L Pro is available on the app, and it is much, much easier to read and operate. All of the settings that you might change are remembered by the pack so even if you disconnect the phone app, you can put the unit into recording mode manually and it remembers your settings. I've never had a problem with the sliding control as it seems to be designed to use your thumbnail...once you get used to it, it becomes second nature, but that's just me!

@@petercofrancesco9812 yes, but the app has to transmit additions data for the meters and settings as well so there *might be bandwidth issues as well. Tentacle Sync’s app allows you to listen to a single recorder from the app at a a time, but not multiple recorders at the same time.

I know I´m late, and my question might be stupid since I really never used an atomos ultrasync, but when you say you can use the app Or the timcode, you mean that I can only have timecode if I don´t use the app? Also, I need an ultrasync for every DL? if I fot example have 6 of them on a shoot, can I sync them at the beginning an keep the ultrasync connected to my camera, AND use the app to change settings? Thank you very much for your videos they are very very good and have helped me for years now to understand a little bit better the audio part of audiovisual.

At any given time you can connect to the app or connect to the Ultrasync. So you’ll set everything up with the app first. The connect and stay connected to the Ultrasync for the rest of the recording. I didn’t have multiple units so I’m not sure how it works in those cases.

I just bought this little gizmo. Not a big deal, but I somehow thought it recorded 2 files, one at the set level, and one at a safe lower db. Second....I find it a bit of a hassle when connecting to a computer to off load your files you need to go in to the menu to set it to USB mode, or mass storage device, what ever it is. Well last as the reviewer noted the screen is ridiculously small. Like trying to read a pill bottle at the drug store.

and now we have Rode Wireless Pro - What do you think about this? I'm having a hard time choosing one of them... I love replaceable batteries in Tascam. I don't like about Rod is that they're quite large and it's not at all cool to hang them on a shirt, but for some reason they're designed for just that. My friend had to get rid of his Rode wireless go 2 due to the batteries deteriorating after a year of use. In the cold they simply turned off. And in Russia there are often frosts in winter))))

Unless they changed somenthing re. timecode connectivity, the problem is that, even if you get a Blue unit to send TC to the recorder via the app, you can not jam Tentacles or other sync boxes to the same TC source.. so it is a bit of a deal breaker if you want to use this recorder along your current equipment or more "universal" TC equipment

You can use an Ultrasync One which CAN jam with a wire to almost any timecode generator, including Tentacle sync.
