Asa, is there wire on the side where you put the blueish floor tiles? If not, you need to put some there too. A raccoon can tear through that with ease. You can see a little gap in between one of the tiles. You would be amazed what a raccoon can get through.

The girls are likely to pick on each other as the boys are to pick on the girls. If one of your hens is a bit smaller or not quite physically correct, the rest of the flock will drive at them and pick at them. I love your new coop Asa. I so relate to your desire to grow things and make things and all of that. Everyone from the south has some farmers blood I do believe. A great job buddy.

Ive watched fathering autism from day 1. We have had chickens and turkeys and what i would say is you need to put board on the back and side because they need it to be weather resistant. It would be horribke when wind is going through. Also that middle section of the floor needs flooring. Then if you put some perches in there. In the summer be prepared to put a dark coloured sheet on the roof so they have shade, then also in the winter we have put quilts on the top to help insulate the coop so they dont get cold. I live in the UK but this all does still apply in florida too

I think you schould enclose the bottom & give them a lower level, then they'll have shade on the bottom. They'll be cooking with no shade in the summer.. Also there's alot of birds in there, give them more space!

@vicki47210 ай бұрын
Agreed. Especially if there's male and female, they need space to move away, the males can terrorise them. Regarding the roof, even if it's shady it's still not appropriate roofing, also with the heavy rainy they get in Florida it will be so loud, it will stress them out. However, it's definitely better than what they had.
@Daisy-Girl002110 ай бұрын

love the job you did, but i wouldnt put bird pee and crap into the compost bc if you are going to use that to garden with like some people do that wouldn't be to healthy, something about bird pee and crap just isn't good for you to have in your veggies and fruits, if its just flowers and plants that fine
@moremaass10 ай бұрын
Fun fact, birds don’t actually pee. It all comes out at the same time. Quail poop is high in nitrogen so it’s a very hot item to put in the compost. It’s perfectly fine though if it’s in the compost long enough. Rabbit poop is the best though. It can go straight into the garden soil.

Free range birds are not permitted and quail fly. 12 birds in a space big enough to house 16. The trees above and on the Northside of a 2 story house is considerable shade. That's why I chose the clear roof...so they would get enough light.
