I'll be building a coop similar to this, but its gonna be bigger and then a walkin she shed lol I'm running into one problem maybe you can help? The width of my coop is a 10×12 and I'm gonna have to do two drop down clean out area on each side to be able to clean it and reach to the middle (5feet)... but doing that I cant figure out where to put my roost bars. And ideas. I was thinking two 5 feet width ladders so I can remove them, but I reall like the look of your long roosting bars and the fact they are all on the same level. Also thought about going up and making an A shape but I dont want my chickens sitting at the top where there is heat.
@carolinevanwinkle3755 Жыл бұрын
Why not since heat is a problem in south, put a fan up where cupola is to pull out hot air.

This design is the closest to my own plans. I've added dutch door and polycarbonate glazing to my design notes. Is it possible to use hydraulic lift pistons or locking lift hinges like on toy boxes, for the transom windows? Also wondering if the heated water barrel and bar waterer works in very cold climates (Zone 4)?
@CarolinaCoopsVideos4 жыл бұрын
Suzette Robinson as for the flip up windows I wish the gas struts would work like they do in the roofs for our duck houses. What happens with windows is they need to be predator proof. The screen on the windows gets in the way of using gas struts. We have been working on a solution so we can offer them as an option. The other problem with gas struts are that they are allow the window to be fully open or fully closed. We find many people like to be able to have the option to open their windows in increments. As for our heated water system is good for 50 gallons of water to -20°F. I hope this makes sense and helps you out. Thanks for watching the videos.

Why don't you add a separate out building attached to the run for storage of hemp, rear doors, tools, rake for cleaning out, wheelbarrow, etc,etc,etc? It could be sold as a variation and built in the same style as the coop itself.

Were this my coop I'd add a hook or screw under the eaves to hold the chains up when the windows closed so the wind wont scratch the polycarbonate (or paint) with the chain.

What if I own 10 acres of land and it's flat. Not that I do but wishful dream. Would I still need to do any type of foundation preparedness before the coop is built or that not necessarily.?

I have a question. I know the nesting boxes ne to be elevated off the floor. What is the minimum height for the boxes? Everyone on the internet is screaming no lower than 18 inches. To me that seems really high. Thanks for your help and love that coop
@CarolinaCoopsVideos2 жыл бұрын
Hi, We're not sure what you are asking. Are you asking about the height of the actual nest boxes inside? Or the height of the egg hutch from the ground?
@w0lf19692 жыл бұрын
@@CarolinaCoopsVideos my apologies. I'm talking about the height from the floor of the hen house inside to the floor of the nesting box where she lays her egss
@CarolinaCoopsVideos2 жыл бұрын
@@w0lf1969 Well our henhouses all have 12" deep litter beds, so the floor of the nest box is just higher than that. We do offer perch bars for silkies and such, but other birds won't need that. Hope that helps.

Fantastic coop! Is it warm enough for cold climate zones ? Or would it need some kind of heat insulation etc. Thanks
@CarolinaCoopsVideos5 жыл бұрын
We never recommend heat or insulation on any chicken coops (except in a brooder). Chickens adapt to the cold very well (better than the extreme heat!) If the henhouse is too warm during cold temperatures, and they leave the henhouse in the morning, like they always do, their bodies can't adjust to the extreme temperature changes then, and it's extremely harmful to them, even fatal. Not to mention, heat in a chicken coop is a huge fire hazard. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching.

If I heard you correctly, chickens need one by one foot inside the coop (on roost bar) and four by four feet in the run area. But how many hens per egg laying bin?
@truneilson5 жыл бұрын
4-6...but with a minimum of 2 boxes even if you only have 5 birds. That way if two need to lay at the same time all is well.
@mattx92606 жыл бұрын
you said earlyer in never have the food and water in the hen house, why is that? my thoughts were putting the water barrel in the hen house due to the possiblity of it freezing during the winter. since a heatimg lamp will be there.
@CarolinaCoopsVideos6 жыл бұрын
Mattx Because that’s not where the chickens want to be when they’re feeding and scratching for food and water. Also adding a heat lamp to the henhouse area can be one of the worst things you can do for chickens. You are always much better off keeping the temperature consistency between the henhouse and run area and making sure they have plenty of food and water inside the run area and making sure the water does not freeze.

The wire that protects the birds.. Not sure what u call it but its small looking. That's good for small predator's. What happens if u live in an area with mountain lions and bears. How's does it work against them?
@CarolinaCoopsVideos2 жыл бұрын
Hi. If we are shipping or installing a coop in an area where the predator pressure includes bears and mountain lions, we use a stronger gauge hardware cloth. It's also in the way in which we attach our hardware cloth that makes all our coops very impervious to big predators. Secondly, we advise to leave out any food that would attract those predators to your coop at night. Thanks for watching
@jamesoncross74945 жыл бұрын
Do you guys use a ridge vent? If not, how do you get the heat out in the run?
@CarolinaCoopsVideos5 жыл бұрын
Jameson Cross yes we do use a ridge vent and it is functional for ventilation along the entire coop structure. However with a open run like ours you don’t need to vent the ridge line. Thanks for watching.
@steveevans93424 жыл бұрын
Another reason for having a hen house door on a coop with an enclosed run; is to keep the hens out of the hen house during cleaning or maintenance. Then they are out of the way and won't escape.
@CarolinaCoopsVideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. The great thing about all our coops is the henhouse doesn't need maintained in any way. We suggest just cleaning it once every 1-3 years. It's a set it and forget system with the deep litter system. Thanks for watching.

I love your coops and videos but REEAAAALALLLLLY wish you would stop being ugly about "YOU DONT NEED THIS DOOR": it makes it sound like you are telling the customer they are wrong.. it comes off as super passive aggressive! Why not word it better? SImply say customer prefers for peace of mind or an option if you prefer but our coops are secure as is
@CarolinaCoopsVideos5 жыл бұрын
We have been extremely open when we don't necessarily agree with an owner's decision. We're sorry if you don't like the way Matt words it, but he's just trying to tell other viewers that it isn't necessary. He does say many customers want that peace of mind, but we think it's obvious that we don't sell options just to sell options. We also make it quite clear that we will do whatever the customer wants. We think our coops prove that. We appreciate your comment and are glad you like our coops and videos. Thanks for watching.
