Custom Shed/Chicken Coop - Part 2: The Walk-Through

What happens when your husband wants a shed, but you want a chicken coop? You contact Carolina Coops and get the best of both worlds!
Carolina Coops designed, delivered, and built a custom chicken coop for a Liz in Providence, RI, that is part shed and part chicken coop with an attached run area. Matt speaks with Liz about why she choose Carolina Coops for their next coop and Matt shows off all the cool features of this shed/chicken combo. It has storage inside for tools, lawn mower, snow blower and shelving. It also houses the henhouse that has tons of ventilation. There are two huge storage drawers under the henhouse to hideaway chicken fencing and feed. The run area is taller than a standard Carolina Coop because it has the same height as the shed building.
The chicken coop has board and batten siding, a cupola, and has an overall footprint of 10' x 24', with the shed being 10'x12' and the run also being 10'x12'.

I'm so annoyed I can't get industrial hemp in my uptight country (I guess the govt thinks it's marijuana). What's the next best thing, does anyone know? I don't want my elderly parents to have a bunch of work to do cleaning and maintaining, only to enjoy having chickens, so I need to work out how to get that once a year cleaning schedule without hemp. Right now my best idea is a mixture of sawdust, shavings and straw? Is that stupid? Teach me, Oh Wise Chicken KZbinrs.

A bit late in responding, so I don't know if this is any help, but it may be that hemp is not sold under the name "industrial hemp" where you are, it isn't labelled that in the UK. There are two well-known brands, Aubiose and AubiChick that are sold internationally, so a search for that might yield results. A good alternative to hemp is chopped Miscanthus, also known as elephant grass. When sold as animal/poultry bedding, it looks very like the hemp and is absorbent and dust-extracted in the same way. If that doesn't do the trick, then your plan of sawdust, shavings and straw would eventually break down, but wood takes a long time, so I'd keep the ratio of straw (use chopped straw) higher than the wood products. I know this is an old video but I have one concern/question with storing things like mowers and snowblowers what about the smell of gasoline for the chickens? This may be an idea I can talk my mom into if I can feel safer about gas powered items in there.

Is there a concern for gasoline fumes in this specific build with the lawn mower and snow blower being stored right next to the hen house? Or does that vent out through the ridge cap and windows? And will it be a concern during the winter months when the lift off doors are on and closed a lot more?

August L awesome question and I’m kicking my self now because I forgot to talk about in the video. Either way I want to first say that during the design process that was talked about a lot. We decided that while the engines are stored in the shed and with so much cubic footage of space and ventilation it will not hurt the chickens. I would definitely not advise running a engine for long periods inside the shed area. Thanks for watching.

We've had Silkie chickens in downtown Atlanta, GA for 10 years. We are moving out to the country. We are needing a tool shed/chicken run combination. This is nearly perfect! The only concern would be the ramp is very steep and high for bantam Silkies.
