When you use vinyl, use a heat gun and pull the vinyl material to the side and corners. With fiberglass, tear chunks off and apply them. The torn off pieces have the rugged edge that do a better job of holding together

Never thought about using a heat gun for vinyl! Great idea!
@thatonecarenthusiast8491
@thatonecarenthusiast8491 2 жыл бұрын
@@_Gingium_ yea it helps the vinyl stretch a bit more. Also with vinyl, it will stretch more length wise rather then width wise. So when applying the vinyl to something, try to put the stretchy ends to the more difficult angles of the piece you are working on.
@frankthetankricard
@frankthetankricard 2 жыл бұрын
@@_Gingium_ Standard vinyl tends to stretch when heated but most "3D" vinyls made for wrapping are intended to be stretched cold. When heated they try to return to their original size which helps smooth out wrinkles when applied to complex shapes. So it's best to experiment with a test piece first to see how your material works or read the manufacturer recommendations.
@user-kd4dr4rh5n
@user-kd4dr4rh5n 2 жыл бұрын
You can use heat to pull on the vinyl but by the looks of it the vinyl he used has that fibers on the back kind of like a cloth that's used for more rigidity to keep it from tearing in the long run and you can't really stretch it since the fibers won't allow u too much so it'll work better with just vinyl that's without the fibers on the back of it.

I like how he just snowflaked out of control. To make it look perfect is those last 5% things that make it pop and im glad the build has gotten this far. Everything about this build has been a complete restomod and it shows that Gingium takes care in his work. Most ppl would just make it run and thatll be that but redoing the whole car just to make it look and feel good makes it all worth while in the end. Respect out to him for doing all this just to give the car away to a fan. mad respect my guy. My only request is that he needs to race it or at least take it around a track when its all done. Also some more glam footage. would love to see the car when its looking its best.

If you're planning to do some more fiberglass or even carbon fiber work in the future, it's usually recommended to go with epoxy resin instead of polyester resin, which is what you have. Polyester resin does have the advantage of being substantially cheaper, but in every other aspect it's inferior to epoxy resin. The main disadvantage of polyester resin is that it shrinks by a considerable amount while it's drying, while the shrinking of epoxy resin is overall less and also happens while the resin is in a state where it can still flow. Polyester resin works in this case because the headliner foam is very flexible, but if you're working on larger surfaces of a solid material, you'll likely end up with a wavy surface and might even get cracks around the edges.
@_Gingium_

Very good to know that, thank you! Didn’t even know there were two types of resins lol

You can make custom headliners and door cards easy using a variation on papier-mâché. You grab from a hardware store a few rolls of cardboard floor protection material. This is the stuff that gets taped down on floors to keep them from being scratched up by dirty work boots during a renovation. And some PVA glue that can be thinned with water. Method. Cut the cardboard into the shapes you need to about three layers depending on strength and thickness requirements. Soak the cardboard in a mixture of water and glue . Ratio of glue to water may vary depending on requirements and type of glue so mix up some small samples of between two parts glue to eight water and fifty fifty and seven parts glue to three water to see which will best soak the cardboard and dry to the right level of rigidity. With the pieces cut to shape and soaked in the glue drape them over the door or the back of the original roof liner then press into shape. Note you may need to put a barrier between the template and the cardboard to keep from gluing them together. Use sandbags and other soft weights to help hold the shape as the panels dry and set. Once dry you will have something very similar to oem products. Note if you choose the wrong glue nothing will stick to it properly without a suitable bonding agent.

When rewrapping any headliner, it’s recommended to pull of the old fabric/foam and use a red scotch brite to take the rest of the foam and glue off. (If its bad u can even sand it by hand) This gets you down to the base material and you wont be gluing and putting new material ontop of old falling apart glue/whatevers left. I think this is what happened to you here and its also why most ppl have an issue when its warm and the glue falls down. More than likely not the glues fault, just unknowingly bad surface prep.
