18:26 Finally a Bulgarian round, I've been waiting for this moment. Also, It's not Russian, but rather Bulgarian. In fact, the Bulgarian brothers Kiril and Metodiy created the cyrillic alphabet (it's named after one of the brothers) in the late 9th century. Since then, many slavic countries have been using a modified version of it. Including Russia.
@Razaak6663 жыл бұрын
Is that definitely the earliest documenting of Cyrillic? I believe it's been speculated (although never proven) that the Cyrillic alphabet has existed earlier. Considering how closely Cyrillic resembles the Greek alphabet, it would make sense that it did originate in the south of Europe.
@hex_65903 жыл бұрын
@@Razaak666 Yep, it is as far as I know. Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonica, in the eastern Roman empire. The eastern Roman empire influenced Bulgaria (and the Balkans in general) in many ways, most famously for the conversion to orthodox christianity. Bulgarian nobles even learned greek. No wonder Cyril and Methodius were influenced by the greek alphabet. Though their creation was the glagolithic alphabet. Then, their disciples, Kliment and Naum further worked on it and developed the early cyrillic alphabet in Bulgaria which had even more similarities with the greek one.
@bakapotato53273 жыл бұрын
@@Razaak666 Lets put it this way the original Glagolitic script was created by Cyril and Methodius who were sent to Moravia when Rastislav of Moravia requested teachers from the Eastern Roman empire who would be able to educate the moravian priest while using the slavic language. Thats why the brothers created the Glagolitic script. Later on the students of the brothers who were expelled from Moravia reached Bulgaria where they were greeted by Boris I and were put to the task of educating the Bulgarian clergy thus allowing us to conduct the religious ceremonies in our language and not Greek like it was done before. During that time two of the students, Kliment and Naum finalized the first version of the Cyrillic script. The reason the Glagolitic script was replaced was because it was a lot more complicated then the Cyrillic script. And the Cyrillic was adopted by most slavic nations. But it has to be kept in mind that every nation had its own version of the proto slavic language even before the new alphabets were created. TLDR. it looks Greek because it was made by two "Greek" linguists.

@thewiseturtle3 жыл бұрын
@@Itza-Me The autistic brain is the one that is hyper detail oriented and focused on code. It's why we have brilliant mathematicians and linguists and programmers and engineers, because they really love studying the detailed patterns of basic systems, especially artificial ones (human made stuff). All kids are great at learning alphabets, at very low levels of consciousness, as the very young brain is very open to everything like a blank slate (with obvious genetic variations), but as adults, some brains love to study such things more intentionally at higher levels of consciousness to make theories about the patterns. Also, note that folks in the autism corner of the multidimensional spectrum of brain types are very common, maybe up to 1/3 of humans. Very few are ever labeled as "having autism" as that tends to feel extreme, as compared to the more normal level of geekiness of those who just like to focus on studying small details in systems (especially artificial ones).

Though if you're just learning the Cyrillic alphabet and not a language, you can only "transliterate" it, not "translate" it. So that reads as "Bul knyaginya Mariya Luiza"-the "princess" part would be totally lost on you. Fortunately there are many words in common with English so you can sometimes guess a few words, and personal names are usually spelled just like they're pronounced.

I protest! (Kidding of course). I was at the same spot as Tom on the SS round and am certain it was right, but also got 4999. First time I've beaten him though, and perfect rounds on the rest, so that was fun! Great video as always.

First time (after many, many attempts) beating Tom! Took me 35 minutes, but managed to get 25,000. Love this map and series.
@suhasdara30403 жыл бұрын
You have to be lucky or cheating to get 25k on this one because of the Juba one not being labeled correctly on the map
@julia970y6v3 жыл бұрын
@@suhasdara3040 It's labelled close enough that you get a perfect score if you guess correctly. Tom was one block too far to the south.

Finally got a perfect score! South Sudan messed me up as well at first haha. I think you're right that the marker was wrong but it was a block further northeast than you clicked, across from those big blue rectangular buildings.

18:30 just a little insight the Bulgarians actually created the so called "Кирилица" alphabet which Russians copied and claimed to be theirs. so actually Russian is Bulgarian
@jaidynarneill3 жыл бұрын
ok power.
@hex_65903 жыл бұрын
Not really copied. It was meant to be an alphabet for slavs all around eastern Europe. It's just that Russia is more known to foreigners and so they think "russian" when they see cyrillic letters.
@rnabo0313 жыл бұрын
Saints Cyril and Methodius were slavs from Macedonia.
@hex_65903 жыл бұрын
@@rnabo031 Slavic Macedonia didn't exist back then. The region was under byzantine rule, then bulgarian with periods where it was conquered and reconquered. For some time, Ohrid was the capital of the Bulgarian Kingdom. Besides, Cyril and Methodius were born in Thessalonica in the Byzantine Empire.

@@hex_6590 yes but no there are multiple occasions where Russia acted or thought that they created the alphabet
@Harka6663 жыл бұрын
Wow, my hometown - Sofia. Sweet! :) And by the way, we are not writing in Russian. We are using the Cyrillic Alphabet which has been developed in the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire - Pliska. It was commissioned by the Bulgarian Tsar at that time - Simeon I. So, technically the Russians are using our Alphabet and not the opposite. The street, that you've tried to pronounce is called Knyaginya (which is a Bulgarian title, similar to Princess) Maria Luisa. I hope this helped. :)

Perfect score! What a fun round to play. I got sidetracked by all the "Are we in Asia?" clues on that Juba round until I was able to read the sign. Fortunuately, I knew where Juba was already...

Got 24,998 points in 19 minutes. R2 was the only one i didn't find but i actually guessed on the same road somehow, it was kinda random, just guessed on a road that seemed plausible and ended up only losing 2 points. R1 - was a bit tricky because Colombo 11 didn't show up on the map, was confused for a while, but zooming in on the part where it made sense for it to be on, the road was pretty visible without needing to zoom in much. Then it was just using the JDM textiles to pinpoint. R3 - is pretty straight forward as soon as you manage to read the sign if you know where Juba is. Somehow guessed on the wrong side of the road but still got 5k R4 - the flag looked Russian to me but it made no sense because it didn't look like Russia at all plus EU plates. After a while i realized my mistake and started zooming on roads that seemed like it could be the one that we could see the name of and i actually found it on like the second or third street i zoomed on. Then it was just pinpointing using the barbershop. R5 - Pretty straighforward 5k

you beat me by just 20 pts! congrats on beating Tom, although he definitely seemed a bit off his game today! Round two is what got me as well. Just couldn't locate the right part of town, and even placed my point at a "Gate Mall" which i thought referred to the archway. ah well, great game!

Managed to get 24,991 points, dropped some on the first two rounds, as I didn't bother searching for the correct place. Really enjoyable map, though! p.s. As a fellow Bulgarian, I laughed quite hard at Tom's pronunciation of the street name. As we use the Cyrillic alphabet, which has nothing in common with Latin, there is now way to read it right away. It actually translates as 'Princess Marie Louise of Bulgaria' and is a boulevard. As for the barber shop, Tom correctly pointed out that they are usually Turkish or Arabic and the guy standing on the entrance is definiteny not a swede, but whatever..
