This is a short demonstration of the spindle drive and custom power feed for the Taig lathe.
This uses an Icon treadmill motor and a modified MC-40 controller for the spindle drive. The torque feedback can be seen as the motor continues to pour on the power and run without slowing down as I grip it as hard as I safely can with the gloved hand.
The half-nut engagement lever, power feed clutch, and variable speed motor are demonstrated next. The feed motor is inside the hollow riser under the Taig's base.
I didn't really show how slow the feed can operate - it can run much slower than you see here.

I think this upgraded lathe example is what makes hobby machine work that much more enjoyable.......turning for the love of it and making something just because you can. There are people out in the hobby that world be willing to pay good money for exquisite examples of machinery that you only want to work on for fun...........converting a plain basic as bought machine into a polished prize posession could be a cottage industry in itself.

Just realized you've answered literally every question I have at the link in the description. THANK YOU for putting that together. I am sure it was many, many hours of work!

It would be painful to use this beauty for anything but demonstration purposes about how neatly it's put together. It's truely a display piece.

Nicely done! Not only is it aesthetically pleasing to look at, but it looks like it all came as a stock unit.

That is really fantastic. I used to be a centre lathe turner, but for 'home projects' I had a 'Hobbymat'

Very smooth running! I am upgrading the ball bearing on my lathe to some tapered roller bearing. The current bearings are defect and noise can be heard.

One of my general dislikes of the Taig is how clunky and disheveled they often look. They remind me of a cobbled together erector set. I know....the erector set approach is intentional but as normally implemented is overly utilitarian. However, this version even exceeds Mr. Bently's Taig. This is a wonderful execution of a clean design that integrates (and often hides) the various functional improvements that are necessary on any metal lathe and does so with excellent aesthetic taste. (About the only thing I would still like to see someone do is to replace the tailstock with something that is shaped more like the tailstock on watchmaker lathes...yet retaining many of the adjustable features of the stock tailstock.) Very well done!

beautiful lathe love the accents I just wonder do you actually do any real turning or was this an exercise?
@pitts8rh
@pitts8rh 7 жыл бұрын
Gold plating and inlaid jewels would be considered accents. Power feed and ball-end levers are functional enhancements that make the Taig lathe much more user-friendly. I just happen to think that appearance is important as well as functionality, and this is something I strive for in all of my projects. To answer your questions, yes, and yes.

It would be nice to have a hard link with spindle revolutions. Because powerfeed is good for making threads. With current implementation it is almost impossible, I guess
@pitts8rh
@pitts8rh 8 жыл бұрын
It has been done by the person that I mentioned in the article (from whom I borrowed most of the good ideas). And as you probably know there are other ways of cutting threads that don't involve gearing the lead screw to the spindle with all of the fun that that little project entails. You can only put so much work into adding bling to a $300 lathe unless you are doing it as a hobby project just for fun.

is it possible to manufacture this using the Taig itself?
@pitts8rh
@pitts8rh 8 жыл бұрын
+simonish68 I think most of it could be. Certain parts that require milling might be a problem, but you could adapt the design to fit your capabilities. A larger diameter and more rigid lead screw for example could eliminate the need for the milled acetal support strip that I use behind my 1/4" screw. If you spend some time on Nick Carter's page given in the link on my website article you'll see a bunch of creative and sometimes unconventional ways to expand the Taig's capabilities.

+pitts8rh Thanks I was toying with the idea af replacing it with a Hobbymat MD65 but that much bigger and heavier and I kind of like the Taig/Peatol (UK based) and its versatility but for its lack of auto feed
