Back in 2004 , I bought a 1990 Miata from the Original Owner . The clutch was not working and a shop said it would be over $1,000 to fix it . Since it hadnt run in a couple years , she sold it to me ( with the Hardtop ) , for $600 as is . The day I brought it home ,my friend fixed the Clutch . It was the Clutch slave cylinder and it only cost me $38.oo. Miatas are a blast to drive and I kept it for many years until I bought a 2003 Honda S2000. Her " shop " was just trying to steal the Miata from her .

For certain common engines even paying a mechanic isn't all that expensive. A couple months back my Buick Lucerne (3800 Series III V6) began making noise in the area of the serpentine belt. Took it to my mechanic, the serpentine belt was coming apart. He replaced the belt, then a couple of weeks later it began making a different noise from the same area. Took it back to the mechanic, he diagnosed (and replaced) the water pump. Total cost for the belt and the pump? Less than $275 - parts, labor, tax, everything.

I'd replace the timing belt and tensioner along with the water pump. An aftermarket kit for the 1.6l - 1.8l is around $50. Not much extra work.

I had a timing belt break on a Mustang I used to have - the result was a destroyed engine. I'd definitely replace it if the belt is getting anywhere close to end-of-life.

​@Blinknone japanese timing belts are made way way better than american or german cars lol. The belt for Japanese cars can survive twice the rated mileage. Other manufacturers you are lucky to get to end of life.

That sports car version of the Toyota Corolla. My 2003 205k Corolla has had its water pump changed several times throughout its life so I don’t have to worry about that which is great considering the fact I had to put over $3000 in parts & labour to keep it’s maintenance up to date. My next major maintenance is a transmission rebuild.

You should have explained what happens if you don’t R&R (remove and replace) the water pump, and drive it too long like that… it can be catastrophic on some engines. My dearly departed 03’ Durango comes to mind.

My father had a small shop, and I was a kid when two guys came for their car without money. Dad had rebuilt the engine. He picked up a common screwdriver and cut a cardboard box in two. Dad dared them to come and get it. They came back with the money.

My ex had a ‘99 Miata. Fun car to drive in a spirited manner. An Austin Healey Sprite with oversteer. The ratios in the car were taken from a Lotus Elite, I.e. suspension geometry, wheel track and base, etc. The rag top is an absolute joy to put up or down. The best option is the fiberglass hard top for cold days.

One trick I use is to take a long screwdriver, hold it to each accessory, and hold my ear near the handle. Acts like a stethoscope and the noisy accessory is very obvious.

A plug seal went on my car (also a Mazda) and that cylinder started dumping fuel into the exhaust system. The catalytic converter burned that fuel, which overheated it and it eventually melted itself into an exhaust plug that left me on the side of the road. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the back pressure tested on that car to see if anything like that has started choking off the exhaust.

This happened to my Brother's car many years ago. He was freaking because he thought the engine was going. But I didn't do what you did. I just took a length of hose and put it to my ear and then the engine, alt, water pump. When I got to the water pump the noise was very pronounced. I replaced the water pump for him and away he went. So get a mechanics stethoscope if you want to be fancy...or just a piece of hose.

i think its better to have a known leak in the spark plug than replacing the seal and then not knowing where will the leak explode in the future, i wouldnt replace the seal until fixing the root cause of the leak

With a Mazda that old, that is when Ford owned part of it and they used Ford parts. So bet that water pump is from Ford. Still, the cars were built pretty well even back then using some Ford parts.
