Wow, thank you so much for this video, I was kinda disappointed that I had a leak near or above the oil filter, never would’ve ever imagine that it was the same identical issues what your customer has, a tiny pin hole on the oil filter wall. I would have written on the invoice that the engine was run with a major oil leak and that it ran low on oil several times. Then I would have further stated that this can cause internal engine damage that may not show up for a while. And then I would have further stated that my shop is not responsible for any such damage. That way if it comes back a week later on a flatbed truck all seized up or with a spun bearing the customer won't be able to blame me for it.

in 60 years of installing oil filters I've never needed a wrench to install one. I've sometimes needed a wrench to remove one that was overtightened or the the gasket stuck. If the owner is going to change the oil in the future, he should use a mid-grade Fram filter and with a grip end and lose his fiter wrench.

Hand tight only. Over tighten can damage the gasket. Snug then 1/4 turn. Always check to make sure old gasket came off with old filter.
@Pantherman1979
@Pantherman1979 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I've only ever hand tightened them, torque specs on an oil filter are useless; seen them on Honda oil filters. I always follow these steps: Take off old filter, make sure gasket came off with it, clean mating surface as best as you can, use a little of the old oil on top of the new filter gasket to help enure it doesn't stick, spin on new filter by hand and tighten by hand. Never had a problem following that method.
@beb1527
@beb1527 3 жыл бұрын
I do hand tight with a rubber glove on. When I go to change the oil the next time, I'll still need an oil filter wrench to get it off - which means it's plenty tight. Truthfully - I had the same car as in the video. It's not easy getting in there with the band type oil filter wrench. When I managed to get one in there for my first oil change, where the filter was tightened at the factory, space limitations prevented me from being able to loosen it at all (tightening would be the same effort). I had to get the type that fits over the top of the filter. I want to know how the guy got the filter that tight in the first place?

There is something unplugged on the air intake tube in between the air filter housing and the throttle body. I can see a hole where something is disconnected and if that is an open hole, then that is allowing dust into the engine that is not going through the filter.

My wife brought her car in the dealership for an oil change. They told her the drain bolt was stripped and she needed to have her oil pan replaced for $550. She called me at work upset and I called the dealership right back and told them to RTV the bolt and slap a piece of tape over it so it will stay put for the drive home. I bought an oversize drain bolt on the way home then drilled and tapped the pan and had it as good as new for $8. The drain bolt wasn't stripped before bringing it to that dealership. Some Tech must have tightened it with an impact or something. Long story long is don't take a repair shop at its word or expect them to do the right thing.

incorrect, the oil pan gasket is probably the strongest and healthiest gasket in the engine. it is consantly in contact with oil wether engine is running or not. yes the heat cycles are what wear them out but typically the one thing that kills a gasket is when they dry out and crack. so you are more likely to start developing your leak somewhere else rather the oil pain. @@danr1920

@@2shops1roof That was my original thought but I don't understand how anyone could recommend an oil pan reseal when there was more oil on the vtec solenoid. This was painfully obvious, customer states ever since he did the oil change oil has been leaking on the ground. How could the oil pan possibly have anything to do with that? It's no wonder why people don't trust mechanics. Thankfully there are people like you who are honest and by making videos you can even help people learn a thing or two. It's just frustrating to see things like this happen time and time again it gives us all a bad name

Yeah its a special level of not knowing what they are doing if they cant even tighten a filter by hand. Had an old school bud do an oil change on my truck once. Took the same auto shop class even. He overtightened my oil filter so tight it took me 3 hours to get off with a hammer and screwdriver. Not sure if he had some grudge on me or if he was that incompetent but i’d believe both.

Hand tight then a full turn more is what i would call gorilla tighten. Since not everybody's tightens the same amount, to be exact, you could say as soon as the o-ring contacts the mating surface, go another 3/4 turn works on most oil filters. some of your smaller filters have such thin o-rings on them, that a half turn after the o-ring touches is about all you are going to get. Hand tight for Braun Strowman would be way too tight.

@@2shops1roof The leak I had was tiny, causing me to change out the filter because it appeared to be coming from the oil filter gasket. The tiny leak was still there. Yes it would if doing that way. I ran the car and the very last thing I did was check level and top off again. Always check level last, and in most cases letting the engine sit off for 10-20 seconds is all that is needed. Some vehicles require a few minutes to let the last bit of oil drain down to the pan, just not many.
