Customised Axial SCX24 Jeep Wrangler JLU RC Crawler - Hill climbing challenge & off-road driving

BlackSeaRC, in association with NorthSeaRC, presents a second video featuring the Axial SCX24 Jeep Wrangler JLU CRC that has been customised with a selection of accessories by CChand. In this video, you can see how this 1:24 scale mini crawler performs in dusty off-road conditions including steep hill climbing challenges.
The SCX24 by Axial Racing is one of the most respected RTR (Ready-To-Run) "hobby-grade" mini-crawlers on the market. Since its launch several years ago it has gained a reputation for being one of the best performing trucks. Aftermarket companies offer a huge range of upgrade parts for these trucks enabling users to modify almost every part of their vehicles. However, one of the biggest weaknesses of the SCX24 was the scale realism of the body.
Recently, Axial has launched a new 1:24 scale product, the SCX24 Ford Bronco featuring a hard body. This offers a new level of realism, previously unseen on the polycarbonate bodied SCX24 predecessors. If you are a particular fan of the Jeep Wrangler body or you already own a SCX24 Jeep that you have invested a lot of money in with regard to upgrades, you may wish to consider adding some accessories. Therefore, in the previous SCX24 video, BlackSeaRC selected a number of interesting parts suitable for enhancing the looks of the Jeep Wrangler.
The SCX24 Jeep Wrangler featured in this video has the following CChand accessories fitted to improve scale realism:
Inner fenders and side under-run protection bars

This is the type of product that has inspired the new Traxxas TRX-4M (TRX4M). It will be interesting to see if the slightly larger 1:18 scale crawler can take the title of "best mini crawler" from the SCX24 in the future.

The SCX24 is affordable, has great performance and is easy to take wherever you go. On top of this, it is one of the most customisable RC products available so you can upgrade or modify it to suit your requirements.

Thanks Christian, the SCX24 was on the limit at times on the steepest parts of the slope but with a bit of maneuvering, it always managed to continue. You could see when I started to come down the hill that the tyres were sliding even though the truck was braking.

It would be interesting to see how the SCX24 performs on the beach and in the dunes. There are some great locations like this along the North Sea coast that are perfect for running RC vehicles.

I would like to try that. I suspect the SCX24 would struggle in soft sand but on hard sand it should be fun. I will make another video on the North Sea coast some time in the future. There are quite a few other RC vehicles I want to test there as well.

Check out my 1:18 scale Partner Racing QX-4 rock crawling buggy which comes with a sound module as standard and has a nice V8 engine sound, just like the real Icelandic Formula Offroad buggies.

@@BlackSeaRC To be honest, only now I realized that it's a small model, it drives perfectly and looking at this video it's hard to distinguish it from a larger model. The small size is a great advantage in transport, sometimes I have a problem with my models because they are big and heavy, my recently finished Tatra 813 Kolos truck (Cross RC DC8) weighs over 11 kg and is about 80 cm long... so without a car it will be difficult transport it over long distances, e.g. to the forest.

My Cross-RC AT4V crawler has quite a few metal parts on it and as soon as you start trying to carry it, you quickly realise it is going to be no easy task. It won't fit in any type of carrying bag so it really makes it difficult to transport anything more than a short distance.

@@hwroadbeasts One of the reasons that RC vehicles are such a great hobby is the variety and choice. If you want to spend anywhere from a few Pounds to many thousands, there will be something for you. Sometimes, if I am at the beach or heath land, I want a buggy that can do some fast runs and jumps and other times I want a crawler so I can challenge myself with some technical driving over obstacles.

The SCX24 seems to have been around for ages now. It is a pity Axial hasn't updated it or released new versions.

When the SCX24 was first launched it made a big impression. At the time, there was the Kyosho Mini-Z 4x4 at the same scale but it cost a lot more. The SCX24 established itself as a leader in the mini crawler field and there were a huge number of aftermarket upgrades available. More recently, many companies have moved into the 1:18 scale market (e.g. ROC Hobby, Traxxas, etc.) which still offers the advantages of a small scale but with better performance potential. Axial launched the Bronco bodied versions of the SCX24 but I feel they have been a little bit left behind and need to do something new now.

Did any of the modifications have a negative impact on the performance?

All the parts are 3D printed and are quite lightweight but obviously add weight higher up. The spare wheel bracket on its own has no real impact but if you choose to fit a spare wheel and tyre assembly, it will position a lot of extra weight at the rear which will reduce climbing performance. The roof rack will also have a small impact, especially so if you carry some scale accessories. If you add brass hub weights or maybe fit brass diff covers, this will more than offset the weight of the custom parts.
