I've owned many of both and I'd say VR6 is for enjoying the sound and characteristics of a beautiful example of a N/A engine and 1.8t is for performance per buck while sounding... well, a four cylinder. Of course turboing a VR6 is the god level choice if you want to put some money into it. Both are great engines and deserve a place in the hall of fame!

If you're converting the drivetrain with 4-motion, the VR6 makes sense. Otherwise the engine is too nose-heavy for the lighter MK1, MK2 and MK3 platforms, which affects handling. If you don't have all-wheel drive, go with the 1.8T.

I’m building a 1.8t polo 6n2 . I had a mk3 Vr and lived it over never had a better car since, I toyed with the idea of putting a vr in the polo but like you said the weight like you said put me off . So 1.8t it was then so in that case it had to be the best 1.8t engine . I then found a BAM (225 bro) 1.8t engine for £350 , get a mapped ecu to 265 . I’m now currently doing internal’s in the engine and going for a ko4 turbo off the train. I wanted to get 300bhp but now it’s looking more in the 380-400 Bhp, but with that being said I’m still investigating and getting more research and videos like this are a massive help thank you so much . 👊🏾

Team 1.8t... not that I don't love a 12v VR (had many in the past). Intercooler and charge piping was probably the biggest PITA when it came to my mk3.5 cabrio swap. Everything else was relatively simple. I just wish BFI still made the mk3 1.8t intercooler. Given the mk3.5 specific wiring as well as the price and availability of 12v VR, the 1.8t/02j and its simple tunability was the clear choice for me. Plus, based on the model year of my cabrio (2002) there were also registration and insurance hurdles in putting an older motor into the vehicle. I was faced with either a 24v or a 1.8t.
@acefighterpilot2 жыл бұрын
I put a AAA VR6 in my '01 Cabrio. The wiring took me about two weeks (it was my first swap), which was complicated by the different connector styles between the car and the engine. The car also passed an OBD2 emissions test using the 1996 AAA ECU. The donor car cost $600, which also provided the transmission, Plus suspension, and a host of various Mk3 spares. Given my car previously had an automatic transmission, I didn't notice an increased nose heavy tendency after the swap. I think its handling is limited by its body moreso than anything else. There is a local curved highway offramp that I can only carve at about 55mph in my Cabrio, but my Mk7 will take it at 70mph easily. It's worth it for the drop top wookie noises though, and I like the sensation of drive by cable.

I'd say the 1.8/2.0t kits are the best bang for the buck so for a more budget friendly build go with the 4 banger, for performance peak the 2.5t is pretty much the king and for a badass cruiser you want that NA VR5/6 and turbo it if you want to make a statement. I have owned a 1.8t modded to 240whp and a stock r32 (soon to be turbo). vr6 is better in most ways for me. they alluded to it in the video but torque steer on the 1.8t is heavy. Despite the 1.8t being faster accelerating, out of corners vr6 kills it. You simply cant get on power as fast as the steering fights you on power in the 1.8t. vr6 smoothness is not to be overlooked for sure. I know you can do things to counter the torque steer but that adds cost that should be considered as well. Mind you this was my (random internet guy) experience, take it with a grain of salt.

I’ve built both 1.8t, all motor VR’s and boosted VR’s in various displacements and they each have their pros and cons. The best part about both is that you can obtain a complete roller with everything you need to at least get the basics of the swap started to whichever chassis you’ve chosen to use. The 1.8t swap is great if you want cheap and simple power that is basically ‘ready to go’ when bolted in. There is ZERO guesswork and you can basically install it all as a complete running unit and upgrade your compressor, tuning, and all the supporting mods whenever you want. If you don’t mind doing some fab work and trying different parts out along the way a boosted VR is a great choice as well. I mean the sound is phenomenal which everyone can probably agree with, not to mention the torque which has its own pros and cons alone because of the trans and axles. If you prefer a great all-motor swap the 12v AAA VR is the cats ass IMO. I built a ‘91 GLI with a built all-motor AAA with an O2A/ hydro to cable conversion, TDI 5th gear and a Quaife and I LOVED that car. It was rock solid reliable, and you could do around 80mph and be around 2,500rpm and get around 30mpg. Such a great highway cruiser. I threw some Cat cams, H.D. Autotech springs, titanium retainers, little bit of headwork (port match, blending, etc... as far as the 1.8T cars, the possibilities are endless. A decent setup is a KO3 sport, full 3” turbo back, decent sized core, nice tune, proper fueling mods- pump, injectors, short runner intake mani, etc and so forth.... the possibilities go on and on... this video is certainly helpful in choosing what folks are looking for in a build. I know off-topic, but at a certain power level (450 whp? maybe even less?), a VR6 build is going to start to be noticeably a lot more streetable than a 1.8T build. Even with a stroker 1.8T, getting a GT30 turbo lit is going to take a relative minute, especially as you start going big port head/cams/intake manifold that all shift the power up. At the drag strip, 1/2-mile, etc, where you're in your powerband all the time, none of that matters. But on the street, the "no replacement for displacement" saying is 1000% true imho. As an extreme example, there's a chasm-sized difference in the smoothness and linear power delivery of a 500+ hp 6-liter V8 vs a 500+ hp 2-liter. The latter can become a real chore to drive on most anything but an open highway.
@COMotorsports3 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the last part of that, let me show you some dyno graphs of the r32 turbo vs a hybrid mk7r. Those things are making boosted VRS look silly right across the board.

For drag racing, having that weight aft of the front axle helps to pull the front wheels down and keep the tires digging into the ground (pretty sure you were talking about this later on in the video). Even with an open differential, my MK3 VR6 could pull off some pretty exceptional launches on street tires because of this. I would absolutely opt for a VR6 turbo if I were building the car for drag racing. For any kind of circuit racing, I'd opt for the 1.8T for the weight balance of the car. As much as I loved my NA VR6 in my MK3, it was very noticeable when I pushed it deep into the corners as the car would understeer like a pig. I had a MK3 8v before the MK3 12v and it was remarkable how much faster I could go into and pull out of corners in that car.

I think the 1.8t can be done much cheaper, the kicker is the fab work required for intercooler piping.
@Robertas_Grigas3 жыл бұрын
1.8t much cheaper as it's almost "complete". All you need is injectors, a bigger turbo and a matching manifold to make decent power. When it comes to turbo vr6 it takes quite a bit of fabrication or you will have to pay big money for pre-made parts.

I have an Audi S3 8L... I built a stroker 20v with a GT3582r making some 620hp (before it bent an IE uprated rod)... now have a 3.2 VR6 in running the same turbo (less power though for reliability)... 500hp at 1bar boost from really low down the rev range and over 400ftlbs flat to 7k limit... and of course the sound of a VR6 :) For me going VR6 was the best thing I have done to my car in the 13 years of owning it
@COMotorsports3 жыл бұрын
I agree, however it's not the same when you put these engines in smaller chassis. The 1.8t in a 3000lb+ car is very lack luster down low, in fact there's no comparison to the VR in that case. Simply due to what it's trying to lug around. Put those engines in a 1000lbs lighter car and you're experience would be quite different. For example if I had to choose between a 1.8t or VR in a MK4, A3, A4, whatever... it would be VR every time. Put it in a lighter chassis and things become a lot different.

@@COMotorsports very true... that said I would happily have a Mk2 Golf with an NA VR6 (12v or 24v) in it... Was shopping mk1 Audi TTs and I ended up getting a fairly clean and completely stock '05 3.2 Quattro DSG as my weekend car. I've always loved the sound and instant power of the Corrado SLC VR6 but those are hard to find in nice stock condition at a reasonable price. So to me this is the next best thing. just seen this and i have a few questions... when you did the "dyno" did you say they had tunes on them... why i ask, is because doesnt different motors have different rated hp by motor codes and how they was built in factory... i ask this because i have a 02 mk4 1.8t with a awp motor code(180hp) stock.... so when you did your testing did you take in factor on which motor you used... i love my 1.8t and i am getting ready to do the deletes as you talked about and a few more upgrades, but i found this video very interesting and infomative... but id like to know your take about the different motor codes, and stock hp ratings compared to a tuned one like i think you said was done with these
