25:30 that’s what I do too! As a newer painter it’s validating to know I’m using proper methods and thought process. It’s all about perspective…no one stands next to a wall and looks straight up ..they see the wall from a distance so the cut line on the ceiling ever so slightly looks better..and opposite in a vaulted area and random places..gotta keep your thinking cap on!

I literally was going suggest the Wooster brush and then u said it. I tried the Purdy clear-cut and it was ok for me but I prefer the Wooster chinex... ♡ and I want to add that I was an ok painter before I started watching your videos. I have learned soooo much. I tell people about you all the time, so hopefully it has helped your channel. With all that said thank you for your videos and nothing you have said hasn't not worked. I just seen the hook with the brush hack and it's brilliant can't wait to try. Again thanks for the help, I currently am painting professionally now thanks to your help.

Hello just wanted to say thank you for the videos! We are new home owners and neither one of us are super handy. I have been watching tons and tons of videos on how to paint, learning tons of new things, and I tend to favor your videos, especially as of late now that we have worked on a couple of rooms now. Tons of people try to sell the way they do things and the best or the easiest or so on. One big things I have seen is people keep saying "You dont need masking/tape just use the brush." You are so far the only person saying that just using the brush takes a lot of time for someone to learn how to do... and we have the paint marks to prove it (on the ceiling, my bad). So just wanted to say thank you for all the help you have been!

Try the Wooster Ultra Pro Firm 3 inch. It keeps a nice tight edge. Also when you roll your walls, just push the edge of the roller into the corner. I normally use a 3/4 inch Wooster nap when I roll walls. Keep in mind that when you roll the corners with a 9 inch roller that it will leave swirl marks on opposite side of the corner. You will need to roll the other side of the corner up to the edge of the corner without touching the other wall to remove those marks. If there is any missed places you can use a brush and drag it down the middle of the corner to fill in those missed places. Also as far as hat banding or haloing goes, make sure you box all of your paint together before you paint. Make sure every gallon is mixed together very well or else your chance for a color difference between cut and roll is very high.

Great videos on painting. I've been painting for 30 plus years and still learned a few things. We all paint our on way but basically the same end result. I use a 3 in block brush it holds a lot of paint. Love the 2 gallon bucket! I use small trash can bags as a liner. Once you get it down and taped it makes easy clean up. We use 18in rollers for everything. Don't think I have a 9in frame on my van. Love the hacks with the 3m masker. Keep up the good videos.

Pro tips, always use a bucket and screen vs a roller tray when you have a choice, always box your paint, always screen your paint, use a pole any time you can vs a ladder, and keep a wet rag, a sponge, and a bucket of water on every paint job. For cutting in, I like to use a few strong magnets, so I can just stick the brush on the can, up out of the paint. I glue the magnets to the bucket when I have to use plastic. Neodymium magnets on the outside of the bucket will hold a brush on the inside of the bucket. If you don't have a grid, you're playing around, but you can stick a wire across from the one side of the handle to the other, and that you can use to chase the paint off the brush, but some people just tease it off on the edge of the can. When you are painting, KEEP THINGS CLEAN! like surgically clean. Always mask the floor when you're painting as well. If you're going to do a professional job, you need to be using cardboard up against the floor trim, or tape and paper the edges, or both, but then cover it with a drop cloth or plastic.

Eye/hand coordination: I have had some success carefully training my vision ahead of the tip of the brush as I move along. This is something like a welder working the leading edge of the weld puddle, not watching the arc. It takes some effort. Switching to the stiffer Purdy Clearcut brush also made a significant improvement with my heavy Sherwin Williams SuperPaint. My cut ins have gone from bad to not so bad as I envision from the ladder the cut in advice from Chris and John, and adjust. Repeating the same errors is not helpful. I have a total of about 100' of DIY ceiling cut in experience, at the bottom rung on the learning ladder. Thank you all for you good advice. The lines are getting better. 1000' to go.

Love the trim cut-in and back-rolling procedure! Makes total sense. Typically, in a climate controlled home, how long of a working time do I typically have to roll the walls and still have wet cut-in paint to overlap? Some of my walls are large, and I'll definitely need to do only one wall at a time. I'm using a high-quality paint, applied generously, as you demonstrate in your videos.
@wildonezhnrqz50873 жыл бұрын
You could do your walls in sections if you roll while "lifting off" where your splitting the wall. I would cut the top and maybe even cut twice then roll the top section (atleast 6-8 feet) then cut at the bottom and roll from the middle down and coming up you feather into your upper section thats been rolled. Lifting off means when you reach your upper section picture a plane taking off. Let your roller roll then slowly lift off at the end of your roll. ( this method works best when painting with flat finish)

Have you ever tried a Wooster Gold Edge brush. Makes cutting in walls a breeze.Wooster no longer makes the Polar Bear roller cover which I thought was awesome for me. They have a cover called “Cirrus”that holds a lot of paint, is easy to work with and washes out easily. If kept clean can be used dozens of times!! The 1/2 inch is great for rolling walls with very minimal spray coming off roller.

I'm always looking for new ways to paint and save time, But an angle brush does work well but I found 4" straight brush to work better. and I'm talking never having to use tape before cutting in. not to mention I cut in left or right handed.
@wildonezhnrqz50873 жыл бұрын
The straight edge brush i feel cuts better in the right hands. Using an angle brush sometimes only can cut so far do to the paint being focused on the edge when you cut. Depending on your wall texture you can use different size brushes to give you more paint and length of cut. Cutting in with a 3 inch brush really gets some paint going and learning to "move paint" or letting the "brush glide" will get you more productive

I like the scoring ceiling edge technique that makes sense ill try that. Also I probably should do the back role more. But I'd hold on that until the second coat because I'll see if it's a problem after the first coat. Don't hold your breath! Relax and breath, If you hold your breath you tense up. Like in the marshal arts breath out as you stroke. Also I'm right handed so I do ceilings counter clockwise and base boards in a clock wise direction. Each to his own I suppose, but I hold the brush the same way as I hold a pencil and like sawing a strait line you point your index finger and you draw a strait line leading with your index finger. many of the techniques in painting, plastering carpentry are all the same. In knowing one thing know 10 thousand. A good technique works for many applications. Breath, relax, extend. That goose neck cut in, not for beginners because. If you hit the wood your going to have to clean it off really fast before it soaks in to the wood and your going to have to move the furniture any ways, so move it first and paint it in normal. Looking for a new skilled painter, hire an artist. They are detail orientated and they can draw a straight line. You want to hire a hard worker, hire a bicycle courier. Both of these. people need money. The artist is poor the courier is fed up working like a dog for next to no money. In both cases watch out for the pot heads.
@DAMON409 Жыл бұрын
Artists don't paint well because cutting isn't drawing. Cutting is allowing your brush bristles to conform to the anatomy of the wall. straightness of your line is dependent on the wall.

Ive been painting for about 12 years, I"ve never seen anybody backroll their cut with a weenie roller like that...Ive never had a problem with seeing brush strokes as long as the roll gets close enough to the cut. Do you cut in first or paint the wall first?
@wildonezhnrqz50873 жыл бұрын
Always cut in before rolling is sort of a golden rule to have the most uniform finish. If you have alot to cut and want to get ahead you can roll first but it also depends on colors. If your painting with lighter colors than your walls a quick primer coat on the walls will allow you to coat the walls without using as much paint. Cutting in on the first coat normally is a lighter coat so when you cut in after your first coat you'll be able to tell how many coats you need to cover the existing paint. 2 coats is always a standard.

Most homeowners would be well served to bite the bullet and buy an accubrush cut in tool. Even as a remodeler I use them on small jobs. Call it cheating, but I don't have to worry or go slow. I can cut by hand without tape, but that accubrush tool works great. I don't need a ladder to hit the cut in on ceilings, just to finish the corners out. On long runs, I use a pole and send it. On bigger paint jobs I'm going to use a power feed roller inside, unless it's a new build, then spray all day, and roll the walls down.
