This Bandsaw circle cutting jig is something that I have been wanting to make for a very long time and now I have a project that I NEEDED to have it! This homemade tool is made from a few scraps of plywood, wood glue and some pin nails. It features a sliding portion that allows you to cut perfect wooden circles anywhere from 2 inch diameter all the way up to 34 inches!
Several folks have asked me if I will offer plans for this and at this time I am not. Each bandsaw is a bit different so take the video and use the ideas and concepts to make your own jig!

I began the day thinking that I should build a circle jig for a small project I had planned (rolling bases for my garbage can and wood scrap bin). In my head I had a much more complicated scheme for the sliding mechanism, but after watching your video (and several others I discarded) I decided to follow your simpler design. By early afternoon, the jig was done, and I moved on to the project. For what it's worth, I made one tiny modification. I thought that over time the bolt that fixes the sliding mechanism in place could chew up the back of the slide and interfere with its movement. So I drilled the countersink for the threaded insert ever so slightly larger and deeper so that it would accommodate a nickel as well as the insert. That way the bolt pushes on the nickel. My thought is that the much larger surface area of the nickel will be less likely to mar the back of the slide. Thanks for posting. You saved me going down a road of unneeded complexity.

Hey Tyler, awesome jig! I've got an idea for you on your problem. You may want to put a rabbet in one of your fixed parts to stick an adhesive back measuring tape on it and the recess should be cut deep enough to allow a little cursor glued in a recess on your moving part to slide freely over the tape. (similar to a table saw but in recesses so you can still spin your parts freely)

Hey, Tyler great project. I built a similar jig earlier this summer. You will have a ton of fun with it I have done some 24 in circles with mine. Something you may want to add if you have problems with your circles. On your hard stop add another T nut and a bolt with handle. As you change materials or saw blades it changes your point of references. Then to fix it all you have to do is adjust the nob and it pushes your sled away. It took away a ton of frustration for me. Looking forward to your project.

USE A WIDE BLADE WITH FINE TEETH... I went through (BROKE) 4 blades cutting 8 circles of plywood 92 more to go. I did this before I figured out the wider fine tooth blade was the best choice. And I only used the fine tooth blade because it was my last choice. I cut 42 circles with the fine blade till I ran out of wood. (I'm using a small table top band saw too)

QUESTION Tyler, what is the straight edge you are using to make your cross cut with the circular saw?
@jameswestii454
@jameswestii454 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Tyler. So realize this is an old video but I just made mine today for my Grizzly and it turned out great and circles perfectly round but 1/16" small. So did you come up with why yours were a bit on the small side? Measuring from tip of tooth and right side of blade, straight line from there to tip of finishing nail. If I measure and layout the same but from gullet instead of tip of tooth and still 1/16" small. All I can assume is maybe finish nail is not straight up and down. Weird but maybe we just need to add a bit to get it right? Anyways, if you have a minute I would be curious of what you found out.

How far back do you insert the pin or nail in the sliding portion of the dovetail board from the blade?
@veritasestveritas8646
@veritasestveritas8646 4 жыл бұрын
That's a nice jig. As far as marking the jig for specific circle sizes, wouldn't you simply measure from he edge of the blade to the center of the pin? Say, if you want a 5" circle, measure 2 1/2 inches from the side of the blade facing the operator, to the center of the pin.
@jetman1035
@jetman1035 5 жыл бұрын
I made one and it works great! Kind of hard to look under the piece and line up the pin with the hole in the material so I mark the hole with a red sharpie to give me the general location. You could put some hair on it too, I guess.

Hey Tyler, welcome back! I think the reason your circle turned out a little bit smaller than you hoped is because you lined the center pin up with the back of the teeth instead of the front edge of the teeth. That 1/16 of an inch on each side of the circle would add up to the 1/8 inch that it's short. No idea if this is the case, but I hope it helps.

Great video. I made a very similar jig last year. I needed to make 16 wheels plus wheel covers for some toy trucks. The exact size didn't matter but they needed to be consistent. Instead of a pin, I installed a 1/4-20 threaded insert in the slide. The truck axles were 3/4" dowels, so I drilled a 3/4" hole in each wheel blank. I used a screw to fasten a 3/4" steel bushing to the slide. I cut the wheel based on the axle hole for perfect alignment. Can your CNC cut a wheel in less than a minute? I made a similar jig to sand the edges smooth and consistent on my belt sander.

Great video. I have a suggestion that might make it easier to set up your jig for making different size circles. Assuming your slide piece with the nail or pin in has a flat/square leading edge. Why couldn't you mark exactly where the back side of your band saw blade is in reference to your jig. Now remove your jig from the band saw, slide out the center piece and with your plunge router cut a shallow dado starting at your mark you made and going to the outside edge of jig which would need to match depth and width of a sticky back ruler. After installing the ruler in dado slide your piece back in up against the saw blade. Now measure exactly one inch back from from the back side of saw blade and install the nail or pin on your sliding piece. Now all you have to do is put the leading edge of your sliding piece on the diameter of the circle minus one inch. For a 6 inch circle you would put the leading edge of your sliding piece on 5 inches due your nail or pin is already 1 inch away.

Check and look at the placement of the blade on your bandsaw wheels. You want to make sure the blade teeth are just front of center. If the blade is too far forward it will always drive to drift in.

The throat depth is largely inconsequential with this jig. If it interferes, move the slide out past 12" and lop off the corners first, then move in for the final cut.
