Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for the Revenant Recon Precon from Murders at Karlov Manor & its commander - Mirko, Obsessive Theorist #mtg #edh #commander #mtgKarlov
Hey folks! Submitted for your approval, we have the 3rd precon upgrade guide for Murders at Karlov manor - this time covering the Revenant Recon Precon and its face commander - the totally not obsessed with Lazav - Mirko, Obsessive Theorist.
In this upgrade, we'll first be tackling the issue of keeping Mirko alive - since we want to ensure our commander sticks around for a long as possible to reliable infect commander damage and reanimated bigger and bigger creatures as he grow (and not be forced to start from scratch if he's removed), and getting the finality counters off our our creatures so we can reanimate them multiple times per games. As such, we'll be adding in a suite of targeting and destruction protection sources to the build to help keep Mirko (as well as some of our more powerful reanimation targets) alive against our opponents removal attempt, as well as a selection of ways to turn the finality counters on our creatures into value to make them less of a liability and more of a bonus. Then from there, we'll be overhauling our surveil suite to help grow Mirko and set up our bin more efficiently, and adding in more numerous and more powerful reanimation target to the build so we can hit them more often as we surveil and get more impact out of them as they hit the board - giving Mirko all the tools he'll need for him and his reanimated friends to drag our opponents kicking and screaming into the catacombs beneath Ravnica.

This is the first video I ever watched up til the end and I have to say I agree with most of your upgrades here but I feel Surveil should be capitalised on as much as possible to get the most out of Mirko. My only struggle is slotting some protection but I do have quite a bit recursion and all of the counter removal. As a result of how Dimir operates I have some cards that interact with my graveyard as well and I did slot in two cards with flashback and I kept the vizier of many faces as well as added a glyph keeper to further enforce my graveyard interactions because yes Mirko is superb but it is never bad to have a strong back up idea. One really powerful common you missed out on that is a must in most of these builds is snarling gorehound as not only is it really cheap to get out at a 1/1 menace for B but also provides a very powerful and constant source of surveil because with this out whenever another creature with power 2 or less which is going to be most of these decks builds to begin with enters the battlefield we surveil 1 and this isn't limited to a once each turn trigger therefore we can get tons trigger for Mirko out of this card alone and our already powerful grave titan becomes even more powerful as now the 2/2 bodies it produces upon ETB or attacking also gives two surveil triggers with each attack. You tell me that's not some awesome value to consider

This just crossed my mind but house guildmage is must for a deck like this as it's instant speed 2B tap surveil 2 on command in my opinion is just too good to pass up on and gives more surveil triggers for Mirko to grow off of >;)

7:45 As much as you may like massacre wurm and it is a good card I personally find it too mana intensive at 3BBB and and unless we have some way to constantly recur it or flicker it it's almost nothing more than a generic 6/5 body with no form of evasion making it really easy to kill and the -2/-2 only happens when it ETBs and it relies really heavily on our opponents playing small creatures which in commander is not always that common and many a commander player has made a great many decks that doesn't utilise creatures at all so the 2 life loss to our opponents will happen less often than not. Twilight prophet on the other hand even though it is very chance based is often guaranteed to drain a good deal of life out of our opponents and pad our life totals at the same time as well as it's 2/4 flying stats ensures that it'll come back more often and is also more likely to hit as a result of being evasive and it's flying also enables to block attacks more frequently as well and it is also an excellent surveil payoff in itself as we can manipulate the top card of our libraries to ensure we get high mana value cards to drain our opponents with >;)

@@GrazzetMTG it definitely is as always, probably gonna throw in a few more high end cards I've accumulated over time but to get the deck rolling smoothly I always like getting started with your upgrades as a baseline :)

One card I really like in Mirko is Sword of Hearth and Home. It boosts Mirko’s power while protecting him from the best removal color and creature color respectively, making it easier for him to stick around and get in. It then lets you ramp and blink a creature, letting you shake off a finality counter.

Just a small tip, besides the full upgraded list, make another list just with the upgrades. That makes it a lot easier to copy paste into other places like Cardmarket wishlists. Also, Satoru the infiltrator is an amazing card for the deck, and so are clones like Spark double!

I'm adding a couple repeatable draw/discard creatures like rona and shredder. After playing the precon it felt bad having a reanimation target in your hand and no way to bin it. Also Disinformation Campaign is either useless or makes you the primary target. People hade when you mess with their hands :))) You highligted a couple of cards I didn't know about, gotta order them.

bonded fetch is a good looter for this deck since it's 0 power so it can be reanimated even by a freshly played mirko with no counters, but also ahs haste so it can start immediatly

Yes, the mana costs in reminder text do not apply to the cards color identity

Extort is an exception, it's rare for a Keyword ability to have mana symbols directly build into the rule. That is why it was decided to ignore symbols in reminder text.

it says you can pay 1 W or B to extort. Since this deck is Dimir, your only possibility is to pay 1 B

I believe the plan would be setting up our Graveyards with win conditions as Mirko as well as other cards can recur those cards for us to use as often as we so desire as well as remember some of the cards resurrect themselves such as unshakeable tail and Master of death which are in the deck but if you want a bit more umph for your attackers Glen Elendra liege I think would be perfect as it gives all of your Blue and Black creatures +1/+1 and if the creatures are multicolored they get +2/+2 instead and it's a 2/3 flying for 1+3 Blue or Black mana

Everyone wants to cut Sphinx of the Second Sun which I don't get. If you're going to go bigstuff reanimate, you want persist and unmarked grave in which case Sphinx is one of the best non-legendary reanimate targets there is. Sure, you don't get an extra combat or Mirko trigger, but an extra card and an extra untap step even once should be enough to put you firmly in the driver seat. Personally, I didn't go with bigstuff reanimate, I went the opposite actually; zero power tribal. This way I don't have to muck about with the subpar surveil cards, put a huge target on my commanders back by making him into a 7/7 or bigger and I can start reanimating things as early as turn 3.

That is perfectly understandable. As suggested in the sidegrades, Auton Soldier is a decent substitute that just about the same price and far less mean (as it functions as a 2nd non-legendary copy of our commander to let us double up what the deck already want to do).
