Honestly there’s certain conditions where I see it’s okay. For example; I have friends when they are severely frustrated, they need to walk away to prevent themselves from snapping back or saying something rude. So in that sense, it makes sense, blind or not, I feel like if this is a common thing for someone they should just let the person know before hand, therefore; whenever they get angry or upset, their friend or whoever they are talking to won’t be surprising. Plus, you gotta also remember about people who have panic attacks or other mental conditions where they are incapable of talking or doing something sensible when under stress or aren’t feeling like themselves. But if that person just did that for no reason that’s cruel and messed up.

@julierose78414 жыл бұрын
Fallisdying Whenever I feel like that, I ask myself whether I actually want to do what they’re doing or whether I’m just feeling inferior. If there’s something you want out of life and this video has made you realise that then definitely do what you can to work toward that. But in my case, for example, I’m not interested in getting a Ph.D. and while playing the piano would be kinda cool I don’t want it enough to deal with the expense, logistics, etc., so I just accept that these guys are better than me at those things and that’s OK.

Nitya Kakade but that outlook is kind of the whole problem. As a disabled person I absolutely hate that whole ‘oh well if you can do xyz after all you’ve gone through than surely I can’. Not everything I’ve accomplished has to do with my disability. Also I’m disabled. I’m not ‘differently abled’. That phrase needs to die. You’re coming from a good place, but it’s important to actually listen to what disabled people are telling you about how they do and don’t want to be treated.

@@absolutelynot6086 The grief & frustration are pretty horrible. I'm not sure if I have lost more or less than 50% of my vision over the last 20 years but the limitations have impacted my life greatly. Even though I've had the luxury of adapting with a gradual loss, at times it feels like climbing a new mountain again and again and the sense of dependency gets deeper & deeper. Although, when I get irritated about how difficult it can be to perform what used to be simple tasks, I remind myself that at least I have some vision AND a reference - I may not be able to differentiate colors anymore but, at least I know what they look like. You're so right about the new identity. I am no longer the outgoing person I used to be. Now, I'm mostly anxious about approaching people for fear they aren't who I expect. It's tricky to judge the right moment to join a group without knowing if someone has given the "welcome" nod or look your way. Also, it's embarrassing passing by people I probably know without greeting them & when my husband has to 'introduce' me...again. Of course, that's IF he remembers their name & if he doesn't, I stand there stupidly, not knowing if I've met this person before - AWKWARD! For those reasons, I keep life simple and small, with lots of acceptance for the cards I was dealt. Otherwise, I'd be crying (or raging) all the time.

I’ve had people do it to me and I’m just quietly murmuring “please stop…I-I can w-walk…” but sometimes when someone asks me if I need help and then they just put a hand on my shoulder and steer me, I don’t mind. At the last week of school, we were on the stage doing a performance for the little kids, and our drama teacher was just saying “backstage people, over on that side!” And I was just shouting, all panicked, “Which side? Where? What?” because obviously I couldn’t see where she was pointing. A boy from my class came up to me and said, “You can’t see right?” He knew this, since I’ve know this kid since grade 2, but I think he was asking in the context of if I couldn’t see in that moment, because I do have functional vision. I said yes, so he put his hand on my shoulder and guided me to “that side”. I really appreciated that because about 20 seconds later, the curtains opened. I hate when I ask people where something is and they just say “over there!” or “right in front of you!” or “you SeRiOusLy can’t see that?” Guys use the clock system. Imagine the blind/visually impaired person is in the middle of an analog clock, 12 being directly in front, 6 behind, 3 right, 9 left, and then just everything in between. It’s much more helpful than just saying over there while pointing because a lot of the time, the person can’t see where you’re pointing and it just gets them riled up and annoyed.

You should do "questions that blind / deaf people appreciate" or "good questions to ask". It would put a positive spin on this idea and potentially help start open and productive conversations between people.
@murk9597 жыл бұрын
Anna Carthy exactly. Like of no one knows anyone who's blind and to be polite they're trying to help blond people to cross the road or help them on general, regular ppl should know the manners and then they would follow that. I mean it's not like we were trained to know how to interact with blind people, especially if he have never had experiences with blind people before. And the questions people ask, of course personal/private Q's are not questions to be asked, but other questions like how do you catch a bus, go to washroom or determine between colours are normal questions and ppl ask the just out of curiosity
@annacarthy89927 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! There needs to be more open conversations on HOW TO INTERACT, not just how not to interact. I think a lot of people are uncomfortable or anxious in certain situations, such as meeting a blind person for the first time, and it's mainly because are scared mainly of saying the wrong thing, and offending or upsetting the other person. I think talking about conversation and how to interact with one another on a person to person basis will help people who were possible just ignorant, have meaningful and positive interactions with people of other communities.

I am not blind but I have an eye disease that is slowly making me go blind. As a kid one of my family friends would ask me this constantly and treat me like a circus animal. He would turn off the lights and make me try and find him because I have night blindness. Was not a good time.
