Groundhogs are smarter than a lot of people, at least some I know personally. Jokes aside I used to work with a guy whom had a friend whom found an abandoned baby woodchuck and raised it, it was like a puppy, it would sit on the couch and watch TV with him, scratch the door when it wanted to go outside, etc.
@owltracker30305 жыл бұрын
I believe it! They would actually come running when Scott called them. There's some wild myths and half-truths out there about these little guys...like "Entire tractor...no, a fleet of tractors, (Yeah..that's it) were swallowed up by a groundhog burrow today!" ...but, I'm not seeing the science on this. If it wasn't for strict Ontario laws, I think they's be great pets. Thanks for the comment Andrew.
@josephtousignant73184 жыл бұрын
@@owltracker3030 Maybe Groundhogs do NOT make good pets, but for a different reason than what you might think. It is my understanding that they MUST hibernate from November thru March. (here in the Northeast , a bit less in the Southern regions) They won't live as long if they don't as I recall reading. So your Pet will be "away" for 5 months,..... no fun in THAT! :-) This year one of my back of garage mom's had 3 babies,...and one of the three is braver than the others and when I get on my knees, he/she? come over to eat up several crisp green leaf lettuce leaves,.... and allowed me to pet it several times. Probably about 1/5 of mom's size,....and the fur was more cat-like than what I was expecting. They're ALL spoiled, and as working from home I can spend a few hours a day feeding 40-50 squirrels, hundred of birds, and a few adult woodchucks and the 3 babies. They ARE so cute when small..... :-) Throughout the day, the woodchucks get a large(3 pound?) green leaf lettuce or similar (some days TWO), ...a pound+ of carrots, a large Broccoli crown, and they nibble in the squirrel's unsalted almonds and sunflower hearts. They also get into the bird seed and bird bread I put out (Arnold 15 Grain bread,...2 loaves a day!)
@owltracker30304 жыл бұрын
@@josephtousignant7318 Thanks Joseph 😊. That's a good point about the hibernation 👍. Especially with groundhogs as it is a deep one...like their heartbeats going down to 5 per minute. That's cute that one would actually come up on your lap too. Thanks again for the comment👍

He may seem harmless, but he, by himself, can destroy the foundation of your home, sheds, workshops, by burrowing underground. And they can decimate your garden or farm lands. They cannot fully be made tame . And, they can put a big hurt on a finger/hand that’s been bit. Don’t remember if they are carriers.

@owltracker30304 жыл бұрын
It was kind of funny at first. The male or father would always run away from us no matter what we tried. The female was gradually coaxed with food being thrown to her in lesser distances everyday and winning her trust. I still failed but Scott persevered and built a special bond with her. The babies seemed to have less fear. I'm posting another video next week of several clips of a 6 to 8 week old Frodo running toward the camera (put to funny music of course) in quite the displays of trust. He especially loves bananas. Thanks for your question.
@andrewjackson26774 жыл бұрын
Owltracker the babies have less fear because their prey defenses aren’t fully formed by the mother yet. You are interrupting this process, and threatening their ability to survive around potential prey, including humans if they have access to the area in question. This is something one must be prudent and suspect of doing in all circumstances
