The Goochland Groundhogs of Goochland, Virginia send their love to Gardener Jeff and the Chunks! I was in prison for a couple of years in Goochland, Virginia and the prison was home to about 50 adorable groundhogs. Life can be very dark in prison, and the groundhogs gave us inmates such joy, they became our pets and would eat out of our hands. I was actually kind of isolated and in a depression until I started watching the groundhogs, and I began creating a series of groundhog cartoons…it brought me out of my shell and helped me interact more with the other inmates. So you could say that groundhogs saved my life during a very tough time. Thank you so much for taking such good care of these teddy bears on four legs! I don’t miss prison, but I miss my Goochland Groundhogs and your videos remind me of them.

Thank you Gardener Jeff. When I was a kid we always had a garden and groundhogs were not allowed. No cameras then, not in my family anyway, and so we had no idea how cute they were up close. Now I love seeing the Chunk munching away on veggies! So glad you didn't get rid of the Chunk and adopted the family as you have. In this sad world with all the problems going on now, it is so nice to see the Chunk munching away and being a Chunk family without fear! Well done Gardener Jeff!! I totally agree about coexisting. I love to feed the birds, but they were taking chunks out of my blueberries and strawberries. I decided to place netting over them to discourage them from eating them, but I thought I should plant some berries just for them. I bought some native evergreen huckleberry bushes for them and planted them along our fence line. We will get a nice privacy hedge and the birds will get some great berries! ❤️

After years of watching my parents fight with every imaginable critter, I decided it was easier, and much more pleasant to live in harmony with them. I have a big pecan tree so I collect pecans and put them out for the squirrels and groundhogs in the winter. The deer love my melon rinds, as do the butterflies. The armadillos eat the fire ants and yellow jackets. The opossums eat the ticks. When all the small mammals get out of control the coyotes move in and balance everything out again. I grow herbs and seem to be the only creature interested in eating them. We are all at peace with each other (though the ticks and yellow jackets likely don’t feel that way). It’s so nice and calm just to get along with everyone.

What a great story! I share your attitude toward the animals we share the planet with, and hope your channel convinces more humans to feel the same way! Groundhogs are such smart and cheeky characters. Years ago, I lived in an old house that had a summer kitchen out back. One day I looked out my second story window to see the local groundhog splayed across the top of its chimney, enjoying the air flowing up the flue while luxuriously sunning himself! If you’re around then enough, tell lose their fear of you. I had one that would have her babies in my yard every year and she eventually brought them out to play when I was coming home for the day. They never ran and hit L from me. They’re pretty smart little creatures!
