After watching this video, I crush all my cans before throwing them out to prevent animals getting stuck. I've also heard yogurt containers, especially yoplait, also can become death traps for wildlife. Cut up the container before putting in the trash. We humans have a responsibility to do as little harm as possible to nature and wildlife. Thank you Wildlife Aid for all you do.

Why can't people do exactly what this man did to the can? I mean how difficult is it? I ALWAYS smash these kind of cans, since I too have wildlife coming into my yard, but I never just throw empty cans on the ground. Some people never cease to amaze me. Don't they think about the "what if's"?

I don't think the homeowner was "just throw[ing] cans on the ground." He was obviously using them for painting. In any case, the hedgehog was saved, and all ends well.

HotCuppaCoffee I didn't see any evidence of active painting going on, only an old rusty can with paintbrush in it, but no paint in sight anywhere. That little guy had to have smelled dog food or he would not have tried to eat anything out of that can, and especially paint. So sorry I don't agree with you.

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions. Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.” The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.” The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

Yesterday we found a baby hedgehog strutting around on the road, lots of kids were around so we immediately went in to get a box. We brought it inside then fed it and gave it plenty water. We released it earlier today and it went straight into the bushes, so we followed it. We then seen it laying there with its mother, so we decided to leave. We are now going to be adopting 3 baby hedgehogs since we fell attached to hedgehogs. Wish me luck xx (as you can tell by my profile picture I'm still addicted to hedgehogs)

I was going out to the busstop once at night and I walked past the place where the trashcans for the house I live in are and I met a hedgehog with a tiny yoghurtcontainer stuck on his face. I pulled it off and threw it in one of our trashcans and just noticed how much trash was laying NEXT TO the trashcans. People please trash goes IN the Trashcans!

I live in Isleworth and have noticed a hedgehog in my front garden Who is seen in the evenings I have been feeding it, but my next door neighbour an awful woman Who has threatened to kill it, she's usually in a wheelchair but was seen on my security monitor standing up and running around shouting at me.I have rang the RSPCA and all they said was building a house and feed it. I love animals and I am extremely distressed I don't know what to do as it lives in my front garden.

Oh wow, I never thought of this. I live in the U.S., so I'm not sure if there are wild hedgehogs at all where I live, but the point stands that leaving cans uncrushed could be a problem for smaller animals that I just never really stopped to consider

Yes, the story of the starfish saver: You cannot save them all, but to the one you can make all the difference. Little guy couldn't back up because his quills prevented backwards movement! How difficult would it have been to put the can in a garbage can!! Man's trash and how terrible it hurts nature and the environment. So thankful for the vigilant neighbor and Wildlife Aid! Hope the little guy lives a long and happy life.

Also, if you get a Kuhn Rikon can opener, the entire top lid of the can is cut off and it's not sharp, so there would be nothing for a hedgehog or other small animal to get caught on or cut on when trying to pull itself back out. The cut edge is just smooth. I have one and it's a weird can opener - it took me a bit to get used to it, but now I love it.
