Hi I'm Brian with Next Level Homestead. If this is your first time here... welcome! I'm glad you're here! If you're a longtime friend, welcome back!!
For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!

One method I've used to get small, young creatures used to me is to just sit in the enclosure, and let them come up to you. It will take time. But their curiosity will eventually get the better of them. I'm not exactly sure why it works, but I think it's because they interpret a large, tall 'creature' (us) as threatening. Getting down to their level seems to help a lot.

I foster cats and this is what I do with my newbies. Just grab my phone or a book and just hang out with them until they are comfortable with me. Also helps I feed them 😊
@lindasmashnuk
@lindasmashnuk 5 ай бұрын
To start with, do NOT look them in the eyes...it is threatening to them, even sit with your back to them so they can sneak up and sniff you.
@Debra309
@Debra309 5 ай бұрын
@@lindasmashnuk 100% agree. When I first got sheep, I quietly sat low in a beach chair near where they fed. I did not talk to them, just sat. Never reached out in an attempted to pet the top of their head as sheep are very skittish. It took a week or two of sitting quietly before they started feeling comfortable. Once I gained their trust, I slowly reach under their chin and beside their cheeks for a scratch. Wasn’t too long after that I was brushing them, (hair sheep). Probably didn’t hurt knowing I was the one providing food twice a day, too. Lol

I concur, this is the way to get critters to not be afraid of you. Works for cats, chickens, all sorts. Particularly any prey animal (cats are both predator and prey). I agree with not looking directly at them, this is a predator move and triggers prey fear. After a while, you can talk softly, but never make any sudden moves. For cats I also allow them to have a long sniff interrogation before I slowly give them a stroke on the cheek. For chickens, I tend to give them hand feeding when confident enough. And yes, the sitting down part is often a really good way for them to be less afraid, particularly for smaller animals.

I love the 20:45 names Ollie and Otis! If you just sit in the pen, reading a book, or scrolling your phone until they get curious about you, it may help. When they get curious, they'll start coming up and sniffing you. Then, they'll learn to trust you because it's on their terms that they make contact.

Praying that your healing is all but complete and that your able to do all that you want and need to do as the season is upon us and now you also have extra chores for the little ones. Love your video, looking forward to the future of the homestead! Take care! Oh, P.S. I've been wanting to tell Emily, that we have that turquoise and metal grate wall hanging also in in our home, have had it about 11-12 years now, I just love it! Such a statement piece!

I wouldn't mind but eggs are being broken. Can I just move the newest setting one to a different nest with her eggs or do I need to put her in a cage of some sort? Of course, three hens decided to set after I put eggs in the incubator because no one was going broody 😂

When I saw all those snails, I was wondering if they would be safe for your chickens to eat. And this is what I found on the Internet: "Yes, chickens can eat snails. They are omnivores and will often consume insects, worms, snails, and even small rodents as part of their natural diet. However, it's essential to ensure that the snails are not contaminated with pesticides or other harmful substances before feeding them to chickens."

I follow a younger couple in Alaska who live largely off the grid who have a bunch of chickens for eggs and meat. They feed their chickens the butchering scraps from caribou, and moose, and let them pick the the fish carcasses, (mostly salmon) clean after filleting them. The chickens devour them all with gusto!. I'm sure they must be producing the best ever eggs!

I’ve mentioned the movie “The Biggest Little Farm” before, and your snail issue reminded me of it again. At one point they were overwhelmed with snails and figured out to set their ducks loose on the snails. 🦆 🦆 🦆 I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t, it might be very relatable for you guys. It’s also nice to see all your animals so well cared for. ❤

Great camera work Emily - getting the sheep out of the car without re injuring his leg would have been impossible without your help. Oh they are SO cute and I love that Bella is sort of familiar to them - that's great; less stress for everyone. And she doesn't seem bothered by them either - hopefully she'll begin to see them as her charges and protecting them. Great name choices too. Hooray for more freedom for Daisy too. And a terrific idea to have them all share the corral in a safe way while they get to know one another. Your little farm is rapidly changing and growing into the vision you designed. And the farm fam is growing along with it. Cow, lambs, chickens, rabbits, cat, dog, and who knows what's next! :D Glad to see your snail population drop though. Those thing must have their purpose but ick. Hooray for you being right about your knee. Sometimes stuff gets tweaked and caring for the injury ourselves works fine. And hooray for having such a supportive Partner Brian - you won the lottery with Em.

Hi Brian and family. Your sheep are adorable. I have kept a small flock of sheep for over 30 years and they are full of personality, but are also the worlds best escape artist. Any weakness in your fencing, they will find it!!! My only comment is the two boys will be great friends until breeding season and then will fight unless they are neutered. Also you do not need two males if you are going to breed with them as they will worry the girls to death. Also, they are of the same blood line. Usually it is the boys you end up "processing". If you had taken those snails over to your chicken, they would have cleaned them up in 5 seconds flat. Please do not use poisons on the snails as the local birds could end up poisoned too. I have had peacocks die from a neighbors rat baits. That is not a pleasant way to die. Just go out at night with a torch and feed the offenders to the chooks. OOPs now I sound negative. Glad to hear your knee is better. I wouldn't have gone to the doctor either . Blessings to you all Cheers, Muffy from Oz.

So glad that you are on the mend fairly quickly. You may soon be doing some running around after wooly critters 😂 The lambs are so so cute! I’m jealous 😊 Does Daisy come back to her shelter without giving you too much trouble?

What a relief not to have to tie Daisy up. And it is so comforting to know all your loved ones are safe. Your son is such a potential great farmer, I say that because who knows what he’ll decide to do, but he does seem to be a natural.

I thought you were going to ask what names might be considered, I say salt and Pepper would be fitting but. You already had names. There are so cute! Nancy from Nebraska
