Cutest Town in Oahu : Walking Haleiwa, Hawaii

Haleiwa is a small town located on the North Shore of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, USA. It is about 35 miles (56 kilometers) from Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii. The town has a population of around 4,000 people and is known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and world-class surfing.
Haleiwa is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to experience the town's unique blend of Hawaiian culture, outdoor activities, and stunning natural scenery. The town has a rich history, dating back to the 1800s when it was a center for sugar cane production and fishing.
Today, Haleiwa is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and galleries, many of which showcase the work of local artists and craftspeople. Visitors can also enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and fishing. I was pronouncing Haleiwa incorrectly throughout this video, the correct way to pronounce it is "hol-lee-ai-wah"

I used to live on the big island and if my memory serves me correct, it is pronounced ha-le i-wa (ha-lay-e-wa). E is pronounced as an A and I as an E for the most part. Ex: Hawaii would be Ha-wai-i. Mauna Kea would be Mau-na Ke-a. Beautiful place and happy travels.

Did you know you walked right past the second-generation owner, Mr. Matsumoto, who at 30:03 is center in your video (glasses, white t-shirt, black ball cap and mustache). His father was the original owner, and I used to see him standing behind the counter all day, everyday, when I first started going there in the late 1980’s, until he passed away. My family still loves their shave ice and we usually go there at least once a week.🍧❤

As a Kama’aina on Oahu since 1970, I highly recommend visiting *The Soap Cellar. It’s the best and busiest shop in Haleiwa. Their specialties are aromatherapy soaps, candles, and gifts! The Waialua Bakery located by Malama Market is an excellent eatery. All fresh homemade baked bread, sandwich, cookies, and smoothies.

FYI...Haleiwa=Hah-lay-ee-vah...translated as "House of the iwa(frigate) bird. Back in the day, birds were used by fishers as an indicator of fish activity in the area
