This works by reaction of the methanol (CH3OH) into formaldehyde (CH2O) by catalytic conversion as you mentioned. The reaction produces energy (heat) and thus the methanol is lit. Just in the off chance that you actually wanted to know the chemical reaction behind this.

SuperAwesomeGuy Only a very small amount turns into formaldehyde, like a tiny amount of the vapor which is immediately expelled when the flame is lit. And once the flame is lit the formaldehyde conversion stops equaling no danger to formaldehyde exposure.

cutlerylover Seeing as you liked that bit of info you might want to hear catalytic reactions explained, I myself find chemistry very interesting. A catalytic reaction is a reaction which normally takes place, but with a material (in this case platinum) which accelerates the reaction greatly. For example, methanol is turned into formaldehyde by just letting it sit. But this is only a tiny, tiny amount. Introduce the platinum catalyst and boom you have a large amount of methanol being converted to formaldehyde, thus creating heat. chemistry is amazing. Bonus: The heat is actually energy displaced from the bonds in the molecule itself. Methanol to formaldehyde conversion is actually methanol becoming formaldehyde and hydrogen gas. The formaldehyde and hydrogen having weaker bonds than the methanol leaves the difference in the strength of the bonds to be dispelled as energy. CH3OH ---> HCOH + H2 + ENERGY Sorry for the brutal wall of text, I'm just trying to get you into another hobby.

Try adding a small amount of Boric acid to the methanol...ghostly green flames, easier to see! While I can't vouch for the safety of lighting a stogy with green fire, the color is nice! BTW, acetone vapors will react with copper in much the same way...

Greg Gallacci..... If you are going to throw around chemical reactions like that, why don't you put a little bit of effort into researching the chemicals produced by them and note them with your suggestions. You are as dangerous as this clown who can't read the directions even when he is reading the directions. Reality check... this device is used to inhale vapors thru an organic carbon. You can't be adding chemicals willy nilly, just because it looks pretty, and NOT mention the dangers. Could you imagine what would be in makeup if we all used your reasoning? Try n be a little smarter next time you post.

Thanks for such an informative video. My grandmother had an old gas stove lighter (it was old even back in the 1950s). It was a single thicker wire with a bead on it, and it 'magically' lit the town gas (coal gas) in the stove. It needed to be held in the flames until it all glowed every now and again, and that kept it working well. I've wondered for years what it was, and now I know. Now I just need to find what it was called so I can try to buy one!

The platinum doesnt react with the methanol, but it acts like a catalyst, allowing the oxidation of methanol (using oxygen as the oxidizer) to happen at a lower temperature (lower activation energy). The platinum doesnt react itself. But nevertheless, supercool lighter!

Exactly I dont think this guy even knows what a catalytic converter is or does
@truthsRsung
@truthsRsung 5 жыл бұрын
The platinum in a cat initiates the ignition of unburned fuel leaving the engine after the combustion process. These are carbon based chemicals like methanol, ethanol, etc. The other "harmful emissions" that an internal combustion engine might produce would be products of your engine management system failing to burn a correct mixture of fuel and air at the correct temperature at the correct time. If the "Check Engine" light is off (oversimplified), your engine won't be producing much in the way of harmful emissions. That said, even tho this guy can't read directions even when he is reading them, he is correct when he says that the platinum in a catalytic converter is performing like his pocket bomb's filament and ball. I take it CaddilacJack is an honorary title? Like an uncle that really isn't an uncle?

I don't understand😔. The guy is showing you something you've probably never even seen, 😕 What's the dislike about that. Well, I'll give you a like 👍 And I'll even subscribe Thanks for the show n tell

@Teddy Ytt I think it's more telling when a person recognizes the existence of such people and doesn't denounce such nonsense. People who press dislike "just cuz" are the same people who destroyed the Hashtag System. Or use dead people's identities to fudge elections. It's just a person destroying systems meant to codify information and present a general form of feedback. What's the point? It's anarchism for absolutely no reason besides self satisfaction. Every time someone clicks dislike "because", they're essentially tugging on their flaccid penis like a 5 year old.

Nice little lighter. Seems like it could be used in emergency or if it's only item needed for lighting a stove or outdoor camping cook stove. Thanks for video, never seen or heard of this, 👍

Somewhere in my stuff, from years ago...I found a Jet lighter... that fires off a straight 2-3 inch flame, for lighting pipes... allowing the flame to shoot downward into the pipe.

Just a comment regarding the "burning off" of the wire. Make sure that you use a clean flame. Propane is good, matches and butane not so good. One of the biggest killers of pocket warmers is using a dirty flame to heat the catalyst. Soot builds up and efficiency drops. Eventually it stops working altogether. This can generally be cleaned off, but this depends on the catalyst design.

Found a justrite lighter with patent date feb 21 1922, 3 tins of half and half, several briar pipes and stems, two completely rusted pistols, and a rotting deck of cards dated to 1917 at a collapsed miners cabin at 9000 feet. Fun stuff.

I once had stove lighters like this with the black ball suspended from fine wires. Difference is the wire arrangement was at the end of a wire holder attached to a wooden handle.

And this is where the trend of playing with lighters started! This is way cooler than igniting due to spark! I can imagine everyone playing with it, while survival of the fittest blinded those who were sniffing on the vapors in between. 😁

Since you collect lighters and smoke pipes by chance do you have a Nimrod pipe lighter? To explain for those who don't know it is a metal tube basically that you pull open and the lighter assembly is in the middle inside a hole. Light it sit it just above the pipe and take a drag which sucks the flame down into the pipe.

I bought a very similar lighter in the UK back in the 1960s so someone was obviously making them then. Sadly long gone, though I do have an unused Ronson bought in 1964 for my 21st. Pity you are not nearer, you could have added it to your collection.

I had one something like this only simpler. It had a small metal case and a pull out top that was saturated with methanol. At the top of the rim were pieces of fine platinum wires forming a grid with the platinum button in the middle. All you did was to give the top piece a shake and it would light. Glow plugs for model engines have the same system of platinum and methanol.

I messed up! All you did was to shake to oxygenate the methanol and it lit up.

The only reason the flame is orange is from leftover fuel from the ones you tried that didn't work. Methanol flames are a very light blue. Also methanol can be bought at almost any gas station as HEET gas line de-icer

You can get methanol in any convenience store. It's in the automotive section, in a yellow plastic bottle and it's called "HEAT" it's a gas line antifreeze and it's pure methanol.

Sweet, they finally made a _compact_ hand warmer! I spent more than that buying disposable hand warmers for this past winter. Would have been nice to carry something of quality around that I could also put out rather than those plastic little bags. I did figure out how to slow down the heat out of them, though. Leave the bag on & poke 'em with a pushpin to let in less air for the exothermic reaction to happen, that way they will last almost a full day. If you are a true outdoorsman sometimes you need that much time. Also at full blast one can cause sweating and I didn't like that. I wonder if they is any way to adjust the heat on the ZIppo ones. That fuel is nasty if it gets on your skin for a prolonged time it will cause a nasty rash I learned from carrying zippos that leaked in my jeans 5th pocket. Later I got a keloid there, too.

fyi, HEET brand gas-line antifreeze (the yellow bottle) works great as fuel, as it's mostly methyl alcohol (not quite pure tho)

Any automotive store should have Heet brand fuel treatment I think it's the same thing. You want the reg yellow not red iso heet. It's for taking water out of gas but backpackers use it for stoves but I bet it works for this too.
