So here's what it's like having a squirrel mind. I often get in over my head trying to help friends. I wouldn't change that about me, but it can become stressful. My buddy Jeff asked if I could fix the cage in his new samurai to make for more headroom. I said sure, probably just a couple new bars. Which is all it would've been but then I kept looking and my mind went and things got out of hand. Here is the video of that taking place. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

Before I was old enough to have a drivers license my dad was taking me to track practice and when pulling into the parking lot crossed the double yellow line. He said that you are not suppose to do what he just did. I replied, but you crossed the yellow line one at a time. He rewarded me with an ice cream cone after practice for thinking creatively.

Bending a tube in 2 planes is tough enough , bending in multiple is crazy difficult. Rory’s spatial awareness is spot on. Helps when you have a solid crew. Team Trailmater 💪👊

I blame the seats being mounted too high. I'm 6, and in a factory stock Samurai I have several inches of headroom before hitting the steel roof (which is about the same height as the factory soft top and the top of the windshield.) Never ran out of leg room either, even with rear seats and passengers in the back. Edit: All that said, it was common back in the day to build a Samurai cage on the outside, just so you don't back the side of your head on a bar too often. Plus it protects all the pretty bodywork! 😁😁😁

I'll take watching Rory make dangerous recoveries look easy all day long. Tail Mater isn't a Video production company, they recover off road in extreme places, the focus is on the rescues. Most of us 200k+ enjoy real content, not " let's reshoot that scene " BS. I happen to like the " in the shop " episodes, Sean and Mike crack me up sometimes, they have a good time. Keep doing it " YOUR WAY " Rory , I wouldn't' change a thing ! 🚙

I love a video where we see so much progress rather than painfully following minute detail, so this really worked. Interesting hearing about the tint cab Robby supplied for his wrecker. That's the first I'd heard of that, so we'll know part of the reason for the slow start on that project. It was super impressive seeing this build come together. The tube bending was outstanding, and everything fitted perfect at the end. I'm sure that is a whole lot more complicaated than you made it look.

Is that 4130 Chromemoly tubing? Wall thickness? I worked at a locomotive facility in Boise for a while. What you guys do has many similarities!! Love the channel! The look in everyone's eyes, as a new 'creation' becomes real is priceless! This channel has to be the best ever!!
@dustymojave
@dustymojave 5 ай бұрын
I hope the tubing is NOT 4130. It's more subject to fatigue failure and more brittle than mild steel. I would rather have a cage for an off road vehicle around me made out of ERW tubing with the weld seam stripe along the side than 4130. My old offroad race buggy was made almost 50 years ago of ERW and won championships. It ended its racing career when it was quadruple flipped wound out WFO in high gear. Nobody hurt. No cage failure. Yep, the frame had a twist of 1" from the front axle to the dash bar. That came out in the 1st 15 minute drive in the desert after the suspension was repaired. A customer of mine gently flopped his 4130 buggy in Baja. Mid 2nd gear, caught a trail edge berm. Again, nobody hurt. BUT...The roll cage was pushed down several inches at the A pillars and had several cracks. After that race I had to cut off and replace almost the entire cage. 4130 is stiffer. Has higher tensile strength. But has lower ductile and lower impact strength. For me the best cage tubing for an offroad car is DOM, which splits the carbon content between 1010 and 4130. And the price. As a retired fabricator of race cars, offroaders, road racers, sprint cars, super modifieds and movie sets, for an offroad crawler like that Samurai that you're gonna bang the cage against rocks without rolling it, not to mention occasionally putting it on its lid, I would choose ERW tube. Best bang for the buck. As the owner. As the fabricator. As the driver.

Hey TM crew, Great transformation on what is left of the Samurai ! That cage looks to be so much better than the original. Hope to see this rock crawler in action soon. Mike, do you not understand the design of the sawzall ? ( Not really picking on Mike, I see people on many channels doing it. ) The foot on the business end of the saw is meant to stabilize the the saw so the blade can do its job. If you try to hold the saw like you are the stabilizer you lose about seventy five percent of the blades ability to cut. Press that foot against whatever is being cut people ! Rory, Has no one told you that you can not climb up a wall like that ? Oh Wait, you just did it ! Never mind. Thank you Trail Mater crew. Take Care
