Cutting Garnet With Meg Berry by GIA. What are the procedures and considerations when cutting garnet gemstone? Many garnet stones are cut into standard shapes and sizes so that they can easy be set into jewelry, such as a garnet ring. There are many different factors to assess because there are several garnet gem types. In this video, Meg Berry, a master cutter and gem artist, discusses cutting rough garnet. She walks through the cutting of many different types of garnet gemstones, and shares some professional tips and personal insights about faceted garnet. She goes through the procedure of cutting gems, which starts with identifying spots and inclusions, then deciding to cut around or include them. Color and shape are the most important factors for her. It is necessary to see beyond the rough stone and imagine the possibility for a faceted garnet. Value raises in a stone with a bright, clean complexion, and working around the inclusions. Different types of garnet require different cutting methods, with mali and rhodolite being the easiest types of garnet to work with.

Thankyou for the knowledge. I started cutting garnet after seeing the Staffordshire hoard (wow) and fell in love with the stuff. I didn't know much about the various qualities one might encounter other than purple or red. Very enjoyable and educational.

Pyrope is my favorite, along with the material from Bekily, Madagascar. I was lucky to get a 1.5ct blue-to-red color changing gem before the mines exhausted. They’re so hard to come by, as are chrome pyrope or even a pure red pyrope with no grey or brown…

I also realize how you cut like a diamond gives you different colors like a clear to yellowish color depending on the angle you cut because its all about the reflection of the light. Nice explanation

I love garnet... many colors and HUGE spiritual significance within them, the dates anyway. have a necklace green but not all fancy but it made back when lost.

Curious what tool do you cut the different gemstones on can you just uses a dremel tool with a diamond bit engraving bits? Where do you get your raw gem products to initially start with is it from a mining company or a geological company ?

Yes, hessonite is a yellow-orange to reddish orange grossular garnet.

It's a pity that garnets are stigmatized as birth stone schlock, and gems in rings worn by the lower middle class. They're beautiful. But I can't get past the name, and what's associated with it. Is there no alternate name that doesn't have such dinky connotations?
